Los Angeles residents Joe Blackstone and Jamie Mohn have long recognized the lasting impact storytelling can have on a child’s life.
Shortly after getting married, the couple began volunteering to read books to elementary school kids. Then, when they became parents themselves, they created the J3 Foundation to help organizations devoted to children’s growth. But after learning two-thirds of fourth graders who cannot read effectively end up on welfare,Blackstone and Mohn decided to take a more hands-on approach: in 2018,they launched J3’s Cozy Reading Club.
Each session of the two-hour,after-school program is free and includes outdoor activities and a healthy snack. Then,it’s time for some comfortable reading. After teachers read a book aloud and the group talks about the storyline freely, the kids find a spot to sit while grabbing a book of their choice to look through. In the end, they get to choose two books to borrow and take home.
In its first year,J3’s Cozy Reading Club served 15 students in one L.A.-area classroom. As of 2022,it had expanded to 17 schools across four different districts, impacting a total of at least 400 students, the vast majority of whom live in underserved communities. With impressive statistics backing it up—90% of the students have significantly improved their reading scores, and 95% say they’ve started reading for fun since taking part in the program—its founders have much to celebrate.
“Having more than 5,000 culturally relevant books available to them is so exciting.I love it when our students can see themselves and their classmates’ lives reflected in the books they are reading. The hope of changing one kid at a time makes all the work worthwhile,” Blackstone said.
Currently,J3 is in the process of raising $864,000,so the Cozy Reading Club can expand to an additional 24 Los Angeles schools and double its book collection to 10,000.This is worthwhile. The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) reported that 68% of U.S.fourth graders weren’t skilled at reading in 2022,up from 66% in 2019.

A recent study has followed the origins,or beginnings of the family of languages that include modern Japanese,Korean,Turkish and Mongolian.
语篇解读 这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了最新的研究表明,一个庞大的语系——跨欧亚语系起源于中国。
The findings show a shared genetic ancestor for the hundreds of millions of people who speak what the researchers call Transeurasian(跨欧亚的) languages.Such languages had their origin with millet farmers who lived in an area in northeastern China about 9,000 years ago.Millet is a small, round whole grain. It was an important early crop as hunter-gatherers became farmers.
The study’s findings show how the use of agriculture following the Ice Age powered the movements of some of the world’s major language families. The research highlights the complex beginnings of modern populations and cultures.
Martine Robbeets, head of the Archaeolinguistic Research Group, said people often think of Japan,Korea and China as powerful nations representing one language, one culture and one people.“All languages, cultures and humans, including those in Asia, are mixed,” Robbeets said.“Accepting that the roots of one’s language, culture or people lie beyond the present national boundaries is to surrender identity, which some people are not yet prepared to make.”
The researchers studied data of vocabulary from the 98 languages.
They identified a group of words related to agriculture and created a language family tree. The researchers examined data from 255 archaeological sites in China,Japan,Korea and eastern Russia. They studied ancient objects including pottery, stone tools and plant and animal remains. They also included the dating of 269 ancient crop remains from different areas.
The researchers found that farmers in northeastern China eventually grew rice and wheat along with millet. The crops spread along with farming populations to Korea by about 1300BCE and from there to Japan after about 1000BCE.As the ancient farmers moved across northeastern Asia, related languages spread into Siberia,Korea and Japan over thousands of years.
28.According to the study, what do Transeurasian languages originate from?
A.Ice Age people.
B.Ancient Japanese.
C.Ancient millet farmers.

Clothes were once used until they fell apart. Not today. In high-income countries in particular, clothing and footwear are increasingly frequently bought, thrown away and replaced with new fashions, which are themselves soon thrown away and replaced.
语篇解读 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了所谓的“快时尚”潮流所带来的环境危害,以及研究人员为了避免环境危害所努力采取的措施。
The so-called “Fast fashion” is having a surprising environmental impact.Take water. The fashion industry, one of the world’s largest users of water, consumes anywhere from 20 trillion to 200 trillion litres every year. Then there are microplastics.Plastic fibres are released when we wash polyester(聚酯纤维) and other polymer-based textiles, and make up between 20% and 35% of the microplastics choking the oceans.Added to this are specific chemicals, such as those used to make fabrics stain resistant and the pesticides required to protect crops such as cotton.
Change is badly needed, but will require the fashion industry to work harder to embrace more of what is known as the circular economy. That will involve at least two things:refocusing on making things that last, and so encouraging reuse; and more rapidly expanding the technologies for sustainable manufacturing processes, especially recycling. There’s a big role for research—both academic and industrial—in achieving these and other ambitions.
Researchers could begin by helping to provide more accurate estimates of water use. There is also work to be done on improving and expanding textiles recycling.Undoubtedly, used textiles go to landfill in part because there are relatively few systems that collect, recycle and reuse materials.Such recycling requires the manual separation of fibres,as well as buttons and zips.Different fibres are not easy to identify by eye,and overall such manual processes are time-consuming.Machinery is being developed that can help.Technologies also exist to recycle used fibres chemically and to create high-quality fibres that can be reused in clothing. But these are nowhere near the scale needed.
Another challenge for researchers is to work out how to get consumers and manufacturers to change their behaviour.Other research questions include finding ways to encourage people to purchase long lasting goods; exploring how to satisfy desires for something new while reducing environmental impact; and understanding why certain measures can be successfully scaled up whereas others fail.
32.Why does the author mention “water” “microplastics” and “chemicals” in paragraph 2?
A.To list examples. B.To prove a point.
C.To provide an idea. D.To give a definition.

第二节
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Alex pedaled his bike along the country lane that led to his house. As he rounded a bend, the tips of the cattails that grew around Johnson’s Pond came into view. His dad took him canoeing there sometimes, and Alex loved it.The pond was always so alive with activities.Frogs croaked along the shore, dragonflies hunted among the cattails, and sometimes Alex discovered turtles(乌龟) basking(晒太阳) on sunny rocks.
Alex was curious about the turtles he saw.One week, when it was too rainy to go canoeing,he and his dad went to the library to check out books on turtles.Alex learned that turtles don’t have warm blood like people do.That’s why they have to sit in the sun to warm themselves. Now it looked like tomorrow might be another sunny day.He decided he would ask Dad if they could go canoeing and look for turtles again.
Just then Alex saw something in the road up ahead. It looked like a big gray rock. But it was a funny place for a rock to be.
And then,as Alex watched, the rock started to move.
When he rode his bike up to get a closer look,he saw that it wasn’t a rock at all.It was a large turtle that crawled its way across the road.It had a bony,beak-shaped mouth and a long, jagged tail.Alex knew right away it was a snapping turtle.
He also knew not to get too close. He had read that a snapping turtle has a powerful bite even though it doesn’t have teeth. It could even bite off someone’s finger. He stood at a distance and watched the turtle move slowly over the road.
Out of the corner of his eye,he saw a car approaching. The turtle was still only halfway across the road.Alex knew he couldn’t pick it up to move it safely to the grass. What could he do?

Thinking fast,he started jumping up and down and waving both hands wildly.“Stop!Stop!” he cried. The car slowed to a stop, and the driver stuck his head out of the window with a puzzled look.Alex darted forward and pointed at the moving turtle.“I’m just trying to save it,” he explained. With an understanding smile, the driver applauded his efforts.Seeing the car pulling away,Alex was lost in deep thought.“Maybe I could put up a sign to warn people there were turtles crossing the road,” he said to himself.
To make the warning sign,Alex hurried back home and started his work with some leftover wood and paint. He hammered nails into the wood to make a flat board, after which he painted a vivid picture of a turtle in the middle and added “Slow!Turtles Crossing” at the bottom. He had completed all his work when Dad arrived home, who offered to carry the sign to the spot.Together they fixed the sign into the ground by the side of the road. With their work done, they both breathed a sigh of relief and headed home with great satisfaction.
