Period 2 Learning About Language
The fact was ①that Wendy was a famous writer. What they did know was ②that she was loved by poor people because she always helped those who were in need of money.Despite this, some people thought she was pursuing fame. Why they were so narrow-minded was ③what Wendy couldn’t understand, but it seemed as if she didn’t care. The most important was ④that she just wanted to do everything that she thought was right. She thought that was ⑤where the meaning of life lay.
The trouble is that she hasn’t found substantial proofs.
The real issue is whether we have enough time to complete the task.
His suggestion is that I (should) keep a daily diary to improve my written English.
连接代词who/whom/whose/what/which/whoever/whatever/...
The retired mechanic is no longer what he was.(what在从句中作表语)
The most important is who will be in charge of the evening party.(who在从句中作主语)
The problem is whose pens these are.(whose
What puzzled him was which room was reserved for him.(which在从句中作定语)
The ideal strategy is whatever works best.(whatever
The problem is how we can handle the difficult problem.
That’s where the famous astronomer is wrong.
This is why many tourists choose to stay in this hotel.
“As you can see,Mark treasured it very much,” he added.“That was when I cried.”
That’s why...
That’s because...
The reason why...is that...
He always finds fault with me and that’s why I get angry with him.
I get angry with him,and that’s because he always finds fault with me.
The reason why I get angry with him is that he always finds fault with me.
My proposal is that you (should) take in foods high in protein.
It seemed as if the world were at an end.
He was crying and it appeared as if he had known the truth.
Look at the dark clouds! It looks as if it is going to rain.

A
New research examined the video gaming habits of 160 public-school preteen students(70% from lower income households),which represents an age group less studied in previous research.Participating students reported playing video games an average of 2.5 hours daily, with the group’s heaviest gamers putting in as much as 4.5 hours each day.
The team looked for association between the students’ video game play and their performance on the standardized Cognitive Ability Test 7,known as CogAT,which evaluates language, quantitative and non-language skills.CogAT was chosen as a standard measure,in contrast to the teacher-reported grades or self-reported learning assessments that previous research projects relied on.
Overall, neither time of play nor choice of video game types had obvious connections with the CogAT measures. That result showed no direct linkage between video game playing and cognitive performance, despite what had been assumed.
But the study showed another side of the issue, too.Certain types of games described to help children build healthy cognitive skills also presented no measurable effects,in spite of the games’ marketing messages. The current study found that types of gameplay that seem to improve cognitive functions in young adults don’t have the same effect on much younger children, which was consistent with previous research.
Does this mean the world can play on?Maybe, the research suggests. But the experts also warn that gaming time took the heaviest players away from other more productive activities—homework,to be specific—in a process psychologists call displacement. But even in those cases, the differences were slight between those participants’ and their peers’ CogAT measures of cognitive abilities.
The study results show parents probably don’t have to worry so much about cognitive failures among video game-loving children,up to fifth grade.Reasonable amounts of video gaming should be OK,which will be delightful news for the kids.At least now we understand that finding balance in childhood development is the key,and there’s no need for us to over-worry about video gaming.
1.What can we learn from the new research mentioned in the text?
A.Reported grades are the only standard measure.
B.Poorer students are easier to have gaming addictions.
C.Most preteen students play video games 4.5 hours daily.
D.There is little direct relation between game play and CogAT results.
根据第三段“Overall, neither time of play nor choice of video game types had obvious connections with the CogAT measures. That result showed no direct linkage between video game playing and cognitive performance, despite what had been assumed.”
2.Which statement did the previous study also indicate?
A.Types of gameplay matter in children’s cognitive development.
B.Young adults are more addictive to games.
C.Parents haven’t taken games’ marketing messages seriously.
D.Video games can have no effect on children’s cognitive functions.
根据第四段中“The current study found that types of gameplay that seem to improve cognitive functions in young adults don’t have the same effect on much younger children, which was consistent with previous research.”
3.What does the underlined word “displacement” in paragraph 5 describe?
A.The change of position of game players.
B.The time usage of game players.
C.The homework completion of game players.
D.The social ranks of game players.
结合上文“But the experts also warn that gaming time took the heaviest players away from other more productive activities—homework,to be specific”可知,displacement这一过程指的是“重度玩家”将时间分配给玩游戏而非做家庭作业这样的更有成效的活动。
4.What does the author think is the most important for children’s development?
A.Interest. B.Imagination.
C.Balance. D.Intelligence.
根据最后一段中“At least now we understand that finding balance in childhood development is the key,and there’s no need for us to over-worry about video gaming.”
B(此篇精读)
For the Greek philosopher Celsus, red wine could be used to treat endless diseases, from tiredness to fever and coughs. But despite its convenient healing powers, the grape,he told his faithful readers, could bring about headaches. Now,researchers believe they have found the reason why red wine causes such headaches.
“We think we are finally on the right track toward explaining this old mystery,” said Morris Levin, the director of the Headache Center at the University of California,San Francisco.“The next step is to test it scientifically on people who develop these headaches.” Red wine headaches are different from the morning-after hangover(宿醉).Rather than coming on after a long session, they can strike 30 minutes after drinking only one small glass.
The researchers ran lab tests on more than a dozen chemicals in red wine. One stood out.Quercetin(槲皮素),found almost only in red wine, turned out to be particularly effective at blocking the enzyme(酶) that breaks down alcohol. This could be key to solving the mystery. With the important enzyme suppressed, alcohol builds up in the bloodstream. At high levels, this causes headaches, red faces and sweating.
According to the researchers, when some people drink red wine with even small amounts of quercetin, they can develop a headache. Why some are more affected than others is unclear. The team now hopes to find out the effects of red wines with different quercetin levels.
Grapes make quercetin in response to sunlight,so grapes grown in plenty of sunlight can have five times more quercetin than other reds.Processes like fining and ageing also affect quercetin levels.“It will be potentially very helpful for people who drink red wine to be able to choose wines less likely to cause headaches,” Levin said.“Also, winemakers may use our findings to reduce quercetin in their wines.”
5.In what way are red wine headaches different from those of hangover?
A.They come on after a long time.
B.They affect wine drinkers equally.
C.They occur within a short time.
D.They produce different symptoms.
根据第二段中的“Red wine headaches are different from the morning-after hangover(宿醉).Rather than coming on after a long session, they can strike 30 minutes after drinking only one small glass.”
6.What does the underlined word “suppressed” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Blocked. B.Supplied.
C.Increased. D.Supported.
答案 A
根据画线词所在句上文“Quercetin(槲皮素),found almost only in red wine, turned out to be particularly effective at blocking the enzyme(酶) that breaks down alcohol. This could be key to solving the mystery.” 故选A。
7.What is the team going to focus on next?
A.The cure for wine headaches.
B.The reduction of quercetin.
C.The effects of quercetin amount.
D.The way to solve hangover.
根据倒数第二段中的“The team now hopes to find out the effects of red wines with different quercetin levels.”
8.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The background of the research.
B.The importance of processes.
C.The way to produce quercetin.
D.The applications of the findings.
根据最后一段中的“‘It will be potentially very helpful for people who drink red wine to be able to choose wines less likely to cause headaches,’ Levin said.‘Also, winemakers may use our findings to reduce quercetin in their wines.’”

2.on the right track
5.in response to作为对……

2.It will be potentially very helpful for people who drink red wine to be able to choose wines less likely to cause headaches.
it是形式主语,真正的主语为to choose...;其中people为先行词,who引导定语从句。
Have you ever complained that there just aren’t enough hours in a day? Do you usually find yourself falling short on time in completing assigned tasks? 1 No matter how hard I tried, tasks just kept piling up towards the end every day and it became extremely difficult to stay productive. In spite of trying all kinds of free and paid to-do apps, nothing helped.
That didn’t change until I discovered the time management technique called Time Blocking.Since then,I have been able to transform my daily schedule for the better with the help of Time Blocking. 2
It is a simple time management technique where you schedule your day such that it is divided into time blocks that are dedicated to specific tasks or groups of tasks. 3 Imagine that you have a dozen or so tasks that you want to finish working on tomorrow. You open your to-do app of choice and neatly list down everything that you plan to do,and then plot some important meetings and reminders in your calendar app. 4 The more specific you are about the task, the more focused and productive you will be and thus, more productive.
5 It not only makes your to-do list more manageable, but it also gives you more control over your day and helps you prioritize your tasks. It also improves your focus and helps get rid of procrastination(拖延症),as it allows you to focus on one project at a time.
A.So what is it exactly?
B.Is everyone interested in it?
C.I used to be in the same boat.
D.The benefits of Time Blocking are substantial.
E.Let’s further explain the concept in another way.
F.You’ll encounter countless questions like these in your life.
G.You’ll need to be very specific about the time and what you’re planning to do.
1.答案 C
解析 作者在前文向读者提出两个关于时间分配方面的问题,后文讲述自己在时间分配上的处境,C项“I used to be in the same boat.”
2.答案 A
解析 前文“That didn’t change...with the help of Time Blocking.”引入“时间模块管理”这一概念,后文“It is a simple time management technique...”开始具体介绍这一概念,A项“So what is it exactly?” 故选A。
3.答案 E
解析 前文具体介绍了Time Blocking这一概念,后文“Imagine that you have a dozen...in your calendar app.”设想了具体应用该概念的情景,E项“Let’s further explain the concept in another way.”
4.答案 G
解析 后文“The more specific you are about the task, the more focused and productive you will be and thus, more productive.”说明了对待任务的具体程度和注意力、效率的关系,G项“You’ll need to be very specific about the time and what you’re planning to do.”
后文“It not only makes your to-do list...as it allows you to focus on one project at a time.”具体介绍了时间模块管理这一技巧的好处,D项“The benefits of Time Blocking are substantial.”
