A
What Happens When We Forget?
Forgetting is often seen as a problem, but scientists say it is actually a natural and useful function of the brain. Without forgetting, our brain would be filled with useless information, and we would have difficulty focusing on what is important.
There are several reasons why we forget. One common reason is that the information was never stored properly in the first place. This often happens when we are not paying attention. For example, if you are thinking about something else while someone tells you a phone number, you will probably forget it immediately.
Another reason is interference(干扰). When new information is similar to old information, the two can mix up. For example, if you learn a new password, you might forget the old one because the new one interferes with it.
A third reason is decay(衰退). Over time, if we do not use or review certain memories, the connections in our brain become weaker and the memory fades away. This is why we often forget details of events that happened years ago.
Interestingly, forgetting can actually help us remember better. By clearing out unnecessary details, our brain leaves room for more important information. It also forces us to practice recalling, which strengthens the memories we really need.
So the next time you forget something, don't panic. It might just be your brain making space for something more useful.
26. According to the passage, forgetting is ______.
A. always a bad thing
B. a natural and useful process
C. a sign of poor intelligence
D. something that only happens to old people
27. Why might you forget a phone number that someone just told you?
A. Because your brain is full.
B. Because you were not paying attention.
C. Because the number was too long.
D. Because you already knew it.
28. What does "interference" refer to in the passage?
A. New information mixing with old and causing confusion.
B. Information getting stronger over time.
C. The brain refusing to accept new information.
D. The process of reviewing old information.
29. Why does the brain allow memories to decay?
A. To make us feel sad.
B. To give space for more important information.
C. To punish us for not studying.
D. To prevent us from learning new things.
30. What is the writer's attitude towards forgetting?
A. Negative — forgetting is harmful.
B. Positive — forgetting can be helpful.
C. Indifferent — it doesn't matter.
D. Uncertain — we need more research.

Train Your Brain: Fun Memory Exercises
Do you want to have a sharper memory? Just like your muscles, your brain needs exercise to stay strong. Here are some fun and effective memory exercises you can try every day.
The Tray Game
Place about 10 small objects on a tray. Look at them for 30 seconds, then cover the tray. Write down as many objects as you can remember. Start with 10 objects, and increase the number each week. This exercise trains your visual memory and attention.
The Story Method
Take a list of words, such as "apple, dog, bicycle, cloud, river". Create a story that connects all these words in order. For example: "The apple fell on the dog, who ran after the bicycle under the cloud and fell into the river." The more unusual the story, the easier you will remember the list. This method uses your imagination to build strong links.
The Number Challenge
Memorize a random number, then try to say it backwards. Start with 5 digits, then move to 7, 9, and more. This trains your working memory and concentration.
Name Game
When you meet new people, repeat their names immediately and try to connect the name with a feature, such as "Anna with the red hat" or "Mike who loves basketball". This helps you move the name from short-term to long-term memory.
Do one of these exercises for just 5 minutes each day. Within a few weeks, you will notice that your memory becomes quicker and more reliable.
31. What is the purpose of the Tray Game?
A. To improve hearing memory.
B. To train visual memory and attention.
C. To practice speaking skills.
D. To increase reading speed.
32. According to the Story Method, why should the story be unusual?
A. Because it is more interesting.
B. Because it is easier to remember.
C. Because it uses more imagination.
D. Because it builds stronger links in memory.
33. What does the Number Challenge train?
A. Long-term memory.
B. Visual memory.
C. Working memory and concentration.
D. Storytelling ability.
34. In the Name Game, what should you do when meeting new people?
A. Write down their names.
B. Ask them to repeat their names.
C. Repeat their names and connect with a feature.
D. Forget their names on purpose.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Memory cannot be improved.
B. Only children need memory exercises.
C. There are simple exercises to train your brain.
D. The Story Method is the best way to remember.

第六部分 任务型阅读(共10分,每小题2分)
阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容用完整的英语句子回答下列问题。
Memory and Emotions
Have you ever noticed that you remember emotional events much better than ordinary ones? For example, you can probably recall exactly where you were and what you were doing when you heard some exciting news, but you may not remember what you had for lunch last Tuesday. This is because emotions play a powerful role in memory.
When we experience something emotional, our brain releases chemicals that strengthen the connections between neurons. This makes the memory stronger and more lasting. Positive emotions, like happiness and love, can make memories vivid. Negative emotions, like fear and sadness, can also create very strong memories. That is why people often remember traumatic(创伤的)events clearly, even if they wish they could forget them.
However, strong emotions can also have a downside. When we are very stressed or anxious, our brain's ability to store new information can be reduced. This is why students sometimes perform poorly on exams if they are too nervous — their stress interferes with their memory.
Knowing this, we can use emotions to our advantage. When you study, try to connect the material to something you care about. Find personal meaning in what you are learning. Also, stay calm during exams by taking deep breaths. A relaxed mind remembers better than a worried one.
In short, emotions and memory are closely linked. By understanding this relationship, you can become a smarter learner.
51. According to the passage, why do we remember emotional events better?
52. What chemicals are released when we experience emotional events?
53. What is one downside of strong emotions mentioned in the passage?
54. How can students use emotions to improve their studying?
55. What advice does the passage give for staying calm during exams?

14. more; better(注意:more carefully, the better 但空格前已给 carefully,所以填 more; better 或 more firmly? 原句:The ______ carefully you pay attention, the ______ you will remember. 应填 more; better,意为“越用心,记得越好”。)
15. asks; to(或 tells; to,但 ask sb to do 更常用)
解析
11. “为什么”用 why,后接陈述语序“some people can...”,填 why; can。
12. “怎样”用 how,后接“to organize”,构成“how to do”结构。
13. “为什么”用 why,后接“his memory becomes...”或“has become”(强调至今),一般现在时 becomes 也可。建议填 becomes。
