A Bite of Hometown: Xiajin’s Gu Shen Yan
Do you know the sweet taste of your hometown?
In Xiajin, Shandong, that taste comes from mulberries (桑葚)!
History & Story
Long ago, the Yellow River left behind sandy land. Nothing grew well on it. In the Qing Dynasty, a kind official named Zhu Guoxiang told villagers, “Plant fruit trees to stop the sand and make a good living.” So people planted mulberry trees. Now, over 20,000 old mulberry trees still stand there, and the forest is a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage (全球重要农业遗产). There is even a legend: a hungry emperor named Liu Xiu once ate Xiajin mulberries and called them “Heavenly Fruit”!
Dishes on the Menu
Gu Shen Yan (Ancient Mulberry Feast) uses every part of the tree:
Leaves → Soup, Noodles, Fried Dishes, Steamed Buns, Pancakes
Fruits → Stir-fried with Corn, Desserts, Wine and Juice
Twigs (嫩枝) → Used in teas and special dishes

情境六:椹果飘香,盛会启幕。七年级同学们踊跃参与各类实践服务活动,同时也不想松懈学业。如何平衡课余活动与学业,成为大家交流探讨的焦点。
Nowadays, many seventh-grade students take part in different kinds of social practice activities and colorful after-school activities. Just like picking sweet mulberries in fruitful seasons, these activities bring us joy and valuable life experience. However, most students face a common problem — how to keep a good balance between study and activities.
In my opinion, study and activities are both important for us teenagers. Our main task is to study. We spend most time learning knowledge at school. It helps us open our eyes and realize our dreams. If we only focus on all kinds of fun activities and ignore (忽视) our lessons, we will fall behind others gradually.
At the same time, the proper activities are necessary as well. Too much study will make us feel tired and stressed out. Taking part in volunteer activities, doing sports or simply relaxing ourselves can help us reduce pressure. They also make us energetic (精力充沛的) to take on new study challenges.
To balance the two things, we should make a reasonable daily plan first. We need to finish our schoolwork carefully on time. After completing learning tasks, we can enjoy our favorite activities. Besides, we must stay self-disciplined and never let the activities take up our study time.
All in all, we should prioritize (优先对待) our study and enjoy the activities in a proper way. Only in this way can we grow into better versions of ourselves and have a wonderful middle school life.
21. What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A. Picking plenty of sweet mulberries. B. Spending time learning knowledge.
C. Focusing on activities and learning. D. Taking active part in many activities.
22. Why are the proper activities important for students?
A. They are more useful than classroom learning.
B. They make students relaxed and full of energy.
C. They can help students forget about exams completely.
D. Only by doing activities can let students stay healthy.
23. Among the following four students, who is self-disciplined?
A. Jim is interested in reading and reads many books.
B. Kate usually helps others at school.
C. Danny always finishes schoolwork carefully on time.
D. Jerry never takes part in the activities.
24. How is the passage mainly organized?
A. Problem → opinions → solutions → conclusion B. Facts → questions → examples → stories
C. Reasons → results → advice → experience D. Introduction → examples → opinions → stories
25. Who is the writer most probably?
A. A school cleaner. B. A volunteer worker.
C. A local mulberry farmer. D. A seventh-grade student.

Holmes then began at once to work on the case.
We looked carefully all through the boy’s bedroom and the German teacher’s room.
We looked at the ivy on the wall and we saw the footprints under the German teacher’s window, but we learnt nothing new.
Holmes then left the house and only came back after 11 o’clock.
He had with him a large map.
He brought it into my room and put it on the bed.
“This case is beginning to get interesting, Watson,” he said, “look at this map, here is the school, you see, and here is the road, so did the boy and the teacher go along the road when they left? No, Watson, they did not.”
“How do you know that, Holmes?” I asked.
“Because there was a policeman here. Look, he was there from midnight to 6 in the morning and he saw nobody on the road. I spoke to him this evening. And here at the other end, you see, is the white house in. A woman there was ill and the family watched the road all night waiting for the doctor. The doctor didn’t come until the morning, and the family saw nobody on the road, so the boy and the teacher did not go by road.”
“But Holmes, what about the bicycle?” I asked.
“Yes, Watson, we must remember the bicycle, of course. But first, let’s look to the south and the north. To the south, we have a big river, no bicycles there then. And to the north, we have the trees called Ragged Shore, and then a great moor, the Lower Gilmore. And here is Holderness Hall, 16 km from the school by road, but only 9 km across the moor, no other houses until the Green Man Inn along the Chesterfield Road.”

My hometown, Xiajin, is a charming place best known for its mulberries. What makes it truly special is the beautiful colours of nature that change with every season. For me, these colours are not just a feast (享受) for my eyes, but a part of my happiest memories and my deep love for this land.
Spring paints Xiajin in fresh, lively green. When the warm wind blows, mulberry buds quietly push out of the branches. Soon, the whole orchard (果园) is covered with the bright green of new leaves, which shine in the sun like little stars. Walking through the mulberry forest, you can feel the hope of new life everywhere. This tender green is the first colour of my hometown.
The best summer colour comes from mulberries. Mulberries turn dark-purple when they’re rip (成熟) and hang thickly on trees. The orchard is purple everywhere with sweet fruit smell. Visitors pick mulberries and fill baskets. Purple catches the finest moment of Xiajin’s summer. Purple is the heart of summer in Xiajin.
As autumn comes, the mulberry leaves turn warm golden yellow. They fall gently to the ground, covering the paths like a soft carpet. The whole town is bathed in this golden light, making everything feel peaceful and warm. This gentle yellow tells us the story of harvest and gratitude.
When winter arrives, snow covers everything in a clean, quiet white. The bare mulberry trees are dressed in white, and the fields look like a pure white blanket. Though it is cold, this quiet beauty is like a picture, calm and lovely.

Enjoy Mulberry Festival, Explore Beautiful Xiajin
The annual Xiajin Mulberry Fruit Culture Festival took place in Yellow River Old Forest Park these days. A large number of visitors travelled here to enjoy the great festival.
During the festival, visitors picked fresh and sweet mulberries. They watched fantastic traditional performances such as lion dances and tasted tasty mulberry snacks and drinks. Many people also took a walk and enjoyed the beautiful views of woods and wetlands. What’s more, lots of local teenagers worked as warm volunteers to serve visitors.
We are proud of our lovely hometown. We will keep introducing its beauty to the world and take on our responsibilities as teenagers.
