Feeling a bit down? Taking a walk in the countryside is the best way to cheer up! Many studies show that being close to nature makes us happy. Some people love walking slowly through forests. As you look at the tall trees around, you’ll find they’re much more than just pretty sights.
We all know trees are nature’s air cleaners. They make oxygen for us to breathe and take in harmful carbon dioxide. But guess what? Trees can do even more amazing things! Scientists have discovered that trees are actually very clever.
Studies show trees “talk” and share things through a special network under the ground. This network is made up of tree roots and tiny threads called hyphae (菌丝). These hyphae connect all the trees together, just like a hidden internet. Through this network, trees can help each other. If a tree needs nutrients (养分), others can send some over. They can also warn each other when danger, like insects, is coming.
An ecologist (生态学家) named Suzanne Simard was so excited when she found this network. She called it the Wood Wide Web. She discovered that big “parent” trees use this web to take care of their “baby” trees. They send more nutrients to their own young trees, just like human parents taking care of their kids.
Trees are truly the stars of nature. They have their own ways of living and helping each other. If we want these amazing trees to stay healthy, we should plant more trees, protect forests, and tell others how wonderful trees are. Let’s take good care of our nature’s stars!
11. What can make people feel happy according to Paragraph 1?
A. Taking a walk in the street. B. Planting trees in the forest.
C. Being connected with nature. D. Having a sleep at weekends.
12. How do trees warn each other of danger?
A. By shaking their branches strongly. B. Using the roots and hyphae network.
C. Sending messages with flying insects. D. Changing the leaf color suddenly.
13. What did Suzanne Simard discover about the Wood Wide Web?
A. Small trees produce oxygen faster than parent trees.
B. Parent trees send nutrients to care for baby trees.
C. Trees fight insects bravely to protect the forest.
D. Scientists use the Wood Wide Web to study new networks.
14. What may the writer talk about after the end of the article?
A The cleverness of trees. B. The ways to protect trees.
C. The places where trees grow. D. The connections among trees.
15. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (①-⑤for each paragraph)
A. B. C. D.

At eleven o’clock the next morning Holmes and I were in the Duke’s office at Holdernesse Hall. Mr Wilder came to speak to us.
After half an hour the Duke of Holdernesse came into the room. He looked older—tired and ill.
Holmes looked at James Wilder. “I can speak more freely without your secretary here, sir.”
“Very well,” said the Duke tiredly. “Please, James...”
James Wilder gave Holmes an angry look, but he went out of the room and shut the door.
Holmes looked at the Duke. “You are offering, I hear, five thousand pounds for news of your son.”
“And another thousand pounds for the name of the kidnapper.”
“True.”
The Duke’s eyes never left Holmes’s face. “Where is my son?” he said quietly.
“He is, or was last night, at the Green Man Inn, three kilometres along the road to Chesterfield.”
“And the name of the kidnapper?”
Sherlock Holmes’s answer was a very surprising one. “You,” he said. “Now, your cheque, please.”
The Duke stood up, his face white and angry. “Nobody needs to know about this—this little family mystery. Just you and your friend Watson. Look, here is my cheque for twelve thousand pounds.”
Holmes gave him a cold little smile. “I’m sorry, sir. There is a dead man in this case. You remember?”
“But that wasn’t James!” cried the Duke. “He knew nothing about it. He was very, very unhappy when he heard about the—the killing. And when he heard about it, he came to me at once, and told me everything. Oh, Mr Holmes, you must help him—you must. He is not the murderer. The murderer ran away last night.”
Holmes smiled again. “I have a little more news for you, sir. The police met Mr Reuben Hayes last night at Chesterfield station. Mr Hayes is not running anywhere for a very long time.”
The Duke looked at Holmes with an open mouth. He said. “Hayes was always a bad man. And that news can only help James.”
“James? Your secretary?” said Holmes.
“No, sir. My son. James Wilder is my son.”
16. Where were Holmes and Watson?
A. In a hotel. B. In an office.
C. At their own home. D. At the Chester station.
17 How much would the Duke offer to get the news of his son and the kidnapper?

A. At home. B. In an inn. C. At the station. D. At work.

In China, there is a very special river called the Yellow River. It is the second longest river in China. People call it the “Mother River” because it helps many people live. For thousands of years, it gives us water, food and homes. The Yellow River starts in the Bayan Har Mountains in Qinghai Province (省) and flows through nine provinces in China. After traveling about 5,464 kilometers, it finally reaches the Bohai Sea.
The river looks yellow because it carries a lot of sand from the Loess Plateau (黄土高原). Every year, the Yellow River carries about 1.6 billion tons of sand! This makes the Yellow River special—no other river in the world carries so much sand! The sand turns the water yellow and gives the river its name. This sand makes the land near the river very good for farming. Many farmers grow wheat and corn by the river. In autumn, fields turn golden yellow like the river.
The river changes in different seasons. In spring, snow melts (融化) and water runs fast. In summer, the river becomes wide and full. Sometimes there are floods (洪水), but Chinese people have learned to live with them. They build strong walls to stay safe. In winter, some parts freeze (结冰) and look like white roads.
Many Chinese poets love the Yellow River. They wrote many pieces of poetry. The famous poet Li Bai wrote: “The Yellow River’s water comes from the sky, running to the sea and never coming back.”
Now there are big bridges over the Yellow River. Cars and trains go across the bridges every day. At night, colorful lights shine on the bridges. They look like rainbows over the water.
The Yellow River is not just water—it’s the heart of Chinese history and culture! We must protect our Mother River.
41. Where is the source (源头) of the “Mother River”?
___________________________________________________________
42. Dongying City in Shandong Province is located (位于) in the lower reaches (下游) of the Yellow River, and gains about 25 square (平方的) kilometers of land every year. This geographical wonder is known as “the Youngest Land (最年轻的土地) of the People’s Republic of China”. Why does this happen?

【解析】
【导语】本文生动形象地揭示了现代人普遍面临的“睡眠小偷”问题,并提供了科学有效的应对策略。
1题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“The sleep thief is tricky. First it takes 10 minutes quietly... then 30 minutes... then 1 hour! Soon your alarm clock rings.”可知,tricky描述的是睡眠小偷如何逐步偷走时间,先10分钟,再30分钟,最后1小时,这表现出狡猾的特性,所以划线词意为“狡猾的”。故选A。
【2题详解】
细节理解题。根据“When the thief wins, bad things happen. Your eyes feel very heavy. They feel like stones. You yawn ‘Ah’ in class. Your brain works slowly like a tired turtle (乌龟). You feel angry easily. Sometimes you even get sick.”可知,当睡眠小偷赢了,你在课堂上打哈欠,思考缓慢。故选B。
【3题详解】

A. Taking a walk in the street. B. Planting trees in the forest.

A. By shaking their branches strongly. B. Using the roots and hyphae network.
C. Sending messages with flying insects. D. Changing the leaf color suddenly.

A. The cleverness of trees. B. The ways to protect trees.
C. The places where trees grow. D. The connections among trees.
15. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage? (①-⑤for each paragraph)

41 Where is the source (源头) of the “Mother River”?
