2. Their voices rose like a single breath, pure and strong. When music faded, audience stood and cheered. Backstage, I just couldn’t believe we’d come this far.
They now call us the “Little River Flows” — a children’s choir that carries the voice of a thousand hills. I am Wang Xiaoxi, a village music teacher in Midu, Yunnan. My story with the children began here, the “hometown of folk songs (民歌),” where melodies had long been whispered but hardly heard in harmony.
Yet things ran opposite to my drive to develop young talents. Local families had no idea what a choir was, thus hesitant to let their kids join. Some children came one week and disappeared the next. Those who stayed failed to read sheet music, not even simple notes. I spent countless hours starting from scratch.
An unexpected hand came when Jin Zixuan, a conductor from Peking University, decided to step in. He traveled from Beijing to Midu every single month, finding each kid’s vocal range, teaching them breathing skills and organising singing practice. The on-the-spot guidance he offered was my defence against the pressure. “When you love what you do, the hard parts feel meaningful,” he said. Night after night after my baby slept, I filled pages with rehearsal (彩排) plans — pages that Jin would later mark up in red, not knowing they would one day travel with us all the way to concert halls and award ceremonies in Sichuan, Beijing and Hong Kong.
It always touches my heart when I realize the choir has transformed everything. For many, what started as a passing curiosity has turned into a lasting passion. Children who once wanted to drop out now dare to dream big. They’ve found friendship, joy and, most importantly, their own voice. And beneath it all, our old folk songs are now sung again by the young. That, to me, is the clear picture: the river flows both ways.
1.What is the function of paragraph 1?
A.To illustrate a popular musical style.
B.To show disbelief in a choir’s progress.
C.To describe a wonderful performance.
D.To introduce a choir of great success.
2.What does “starting from scratch” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Making strict class schedules. B.Teaching basic knowledge.
C.Writing simple songs on paper. D.Encouraging more kids to join.
3.What was Jin’s biggest support for the author?
A.He shared her teaching duties. B.He strengthened her confidence.
C.He revised her rehearsal plans. D.He showed her broader stages.
4.What can be inferred from the author’s clear picture?
A.The river will carry the choir’s songs to distant villages.
B.The stories of the choir will spread both at home and abroad.
C.Local music heritage can be preserved with children’s growth.
D.Music education can continue to positively impact children’s life.
根据第一段中的“Their voices rose like a single breath, pure and strong. When music faded, audience stood and cheered.(他们的歌声如同一股气息般响起,纯净而有力。
根据第三段中的“Those who stayed failed to read sheet music, not even simple notes. I spent countless hours starting from scratch.(留下来的孩子不会识谱,甚至连简单的音符都不认识。
根据第四段中的“The on-the-spot guidance he offered was my defence against the pressure. “When you love what you do, the hard parts feel meaningful,” he said.(他提供的现场指导是我抵御压力的支撑。
根据尾段中的“Children who once wanted to drop out now dare to dream big. They’ve found friendship, joy and, most importantly, their own voice. And beneath it all, our old folk songs are now sung again by the young.(曾经想要退出的孩子们如今敢于拥有远大梦想。
3.Music is often treated as background noise. It plays in cafes, stores, and headphones throughout the day. However, our brains do not simply ignore it. Research shows that music is processed by areas of the brain related to attention, memory, and emotion. As a result, even when we are not focusing on music, it can influence how we think and feel. 1
The effect of music depends largely on how we listen to it. 2 Active listening means paying close attention to the sound pattern and lyrics (歌词) of a song. This type of listening can help people relax, reduce stress, and get focus back. In contrast, purposeful passive listening means choosing music to support a task without concentrating on the music itself. Soft instrumental music, for example, may create a mental environment that encourages creativity and reflection.
When used regularly, music can become a useful mental habit. Think about a song that makes you feel energetic or focused. Instead of listening to it only for fun, use it before a specific task. For example, you might play the same song before studying, giving a presentation, or exercising. Over time, your brain connects the music with that activity. 3 As a result, the song becomes a signal that helps you get into the right state more quickly. The more often you make this connection, the stronger its effect can be.
4 In this way, music can influence the way we feel, think, and respond to different situations. When used with purpose, music can help us focus better, recover from stress, become more creative, or connect with others. In a noisy world, we are not expected to stop the music completely. 5 We should use it wisely by understanding when to listen and how to listen.
A.There are two main ways of listening.
B.Music is never just background noise.
C.We enjoy all kinds of music every day.
D.The connection gradually becomes stronger.
E.This repeated connection shapes brain activity.
F.Instead, we should learn to make better use of it.
G.Active listening is about being fully focused on the music.

4.由上文“The more often you make this connection, the stronger its effect can be.(你越频繁地建立这种联系,它的效果就越强。)”及下文“In this way, music can influence the way we feel, think, and respond to different situations.(通过这种方式,音乐可以影响我们感受、思考和应对不同情境的方式。)”
5.由上文“In a noisy world, we are not expected to stop the music completely.(在一个嘈杂的世界里,我们不可能完全停止音乐。)”及下文“We should use it wisely by understanding when to listen and how to listen.

A.He shared her teaching duties. B.He strengthened her confidence.

A.The river will carry the choir’s songs to distant villages.
B.The stories of the choir will spread both at home and abroad.

D.Music education can continue to positively impact children’s life.
