I have worked as a keeper at the National Zoo, Paris for 11 years. Spot and Stripe are the first tiger cubs that have ever been born here. Globally, a third of Sumatran cubs in zoos don't make it to adulthood, so I decided to give them round-the-clock care at home.
I've got two children—the younger one, Kynan, was extremely happy about the tigers arriving - but all of us really looked forward to being part of their lives and watching them grow. I wasn't worried about bringing them into my home with my wife and kids. These were cubs. They weighed about 2.5 kg and were so small that there was absolutely no risk.
As they grew more mobile, we let them move freely around the house during the day, but when we were asleep we had to contain them in a large room, otherwise they'd get up to mischief. We'd come down in the morning to find they'd turned the room upside down, and left it looking like a zoo.
Things quickly got very intense due to the huge amount of energy required to look after them. There were some tough times and I just felt extremely tired. I was grateful that my family was there to help. We had to have a bit of a production line going, making up “tiger milk”, washing baby bottles, and cleaning the floors.
When Spot and Stripe were four months old, they were learning how to open doors and jump fences, and we knew it really was time for them to go. It was hard for us to finally part with them. For the first few days, Kynan was always a bit disappointed that the cubs weren't there.
I'm not sad about it. I'm hands-on with them every day at the zoo, and I do look back very fondly on the time that we had them.
4. Why did the author bring the tiger cubs home?
A. To ensure their survival. B. To observe their differences.
C. To teach them life skills. D. To let them play with his kids.
5. What do the underlined words “get up to mischief” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Behave badly. B. Lose their way. C. Sleep soundly. D. Miss their mom.
6. What did the author think of raising the tiger cubs at home?
A. Boring. B. Tiring. C. Costly. D. Risky.
7. Why did the author decide to send Spot and Stripe back to the zoo?
A. They frightened the children. B. They became difficult to contain.
C. They annoyed the neighbours. D. They started fighting each other.

With a sun hat made of solar panels, a tea picking robot snakes its way through rows of Longing tea bushes in Hangzhou’s West Lake scenic spot, East China’s Zhejiang province. The 550-kg robot picker is a godsend for local tea planters this season. The upcoming Qingming Festival, which falls on Wednesday this year, is the major harvest period for early spring tea, and the local tea gardens are quite understaffed these days.
Longing tea, also known as West Lake Dragon Well tea, is a kind of green tea. “The beautiful forms of a bud with one leaf or a bud with two leaves are often acknowledged as quality tea. And the picking work of such tea leaves has relied largely on hand-operated work, very difficult to be replaced by machines,” said Jia Jiangming, developer of the robot.
However, most of the tea pickers in the production areas of Longjing tea are all in their 60s, few are in their 50s, and young people are not willing to land jobs in the industry. “If so, the Longjing tea industry may face great embarrassment when there remains nobody to help pick the leaves,” Jia said when explaining why his team started to develop tea-picking robots as early as 2019.
Jia’s team introduced the model of convolution neural networks (卷积神经网络) in deep learning, enabling the robot to study many tea tree bud and leaf image data. Using binocular stereo (双目立体) vision, the robot can position where the target bud and leaf are, cut them off accurately, and then suck the leaves into its basket.
Earlier this year, Jia’s robot helper developed into its fifth generation. The upgraded robot’s overall tea-picking success rate rose from 40 percent to 60 percent. “The new generation robot can do as well as a human tea picker,” said Chen Jianneng, another researcher of the team, adding that though the robot is still in its trial operation, they plan to improve its practicability, thus allowing the tea industry to enjoy benefits brought by modern mechanization in the coming future.
8. Why is there a lack of human tea pickers in the Longjing tea industry?
A. Because machinery has taken the place of human tea pickers.
B. Because the tea-leaf picking work can only be done by humans.
C. Because human tea pickers are not capable of picking the target tea leaves.
D. Because the young generation are not interested in the demanding job.
9. What can we learn about the robot tea-leaf picker?
A. It can suck the damaged leaves into its basket.
B. It can increase the quality of the early spring.
C. It can help pick tea leaves accurately and intelligently.
D. It can reach a higher tea-picking success rate than humans.
10. What does Chen Jianneng think of the new generation robot?
A. The robot’s picking efficiency has been greatly increased.
B. The robot cannot be put into use for it hasn’t been tested yet.
C. The benefits of the robot are being enjoyed by the tea industry.
D. The robot still needs improvements before coming into common use.
11. What is the best title of this text?
A. Robot Joins Longjing Tea Harvest
B. The Newest Robot Picker Enjoys Popularity
C. Advanced Technology Is Used in Tea Industry
D. Longjing Tea-Leaf Picking Work Faces Challenge
D
First impressions can be harsh. One mistake, and you might feel like you’ll forever be seen as an idiot in someone’s eyes. However, I believe reality is kinder than that.
Making a first impression is like trying to keep a door open with your foot. Many encounters with strangers are short and quick and may never happen again. Sometimes that can be a blessing: If the person you meet doesn’t care to remember you, you’ll quickly fade into the crowd of strangers in their mind, avoiding any negative or lasting impression. Other times, it can be disappointing — imagine striking up a conversation with someone interesting only to part ways before exchanging contact information.
To avoid being forgotten, you need to do something memorable — but not something foolish. Make an impression by asking an insightful question or making someone laugh. This means taking risks and avoiding bland (乏味的) small talk; if that’s not what you offer, you’ll likely be pushed to the back of their memory, unlikely to be remembered again.
But what if you messed up your first impression? And one day you see them looking at you, recalling the time you embarrassed yourself, and they’re walking toward you thinking, “I know you from somewhere …”
In that case, your second impression needs to be better. In my 19 years of making first impressions — some not so great — I’ve found that people will give you a second chance if you give them something to care about. Just because you messed up the first time doesn’t mean you should withdraw and stop being interesting. You should try harder: Listen well, ask relevant questions, smile often, tell a joke, and share what you care about.
None of this is a guaranteed “How to Make People Like You” guide, by the way. I’m not even sure if any of this works. But people seem to like talking to me, so maybe some of it does work.
Anyway, if this is your first impression of me, I hope it’s been a good one.
12. What are first impressions like according to paragraph 2?
A. Casual and interesting. B. Brief and temporary. C. Important and lasting. D. Negative and unstable.
13. How can you make a memorable first impression according to the author?
A. By engaging in small talk. B. By avoiding risky behavior.
C. By demonstrating insight or humor. D. By sharing your personal experiences.
14. What does the author recommend doing if you mess up your first impression?
A. Apologizing immediately. B. Avoiding seeing the person again.
C. Forgetting about the encounter. D. Making a better second impression.
15. What tone does the author take when discussing the effectiveness of the advice?
A. Cold. B. Playful. C. Serious. D. Convincing.

When Plans Fall Apart: How to Stay Positive?
Life rarely goes exactly according to plan. Whether it is a failed exam or a canceled trip, unexpected changes can leave you feeling stressed and anxious. ____16____ To regain control, you need to shift your mindset from panic to problem-solving.
Step back and breathe
When things go wrong, your immediate reaction might be frustration (沮丧). However, getting upset will not fix the situation. ____17____ Go for a walk, drink some water, or listen to your favorite music. These small breaks allow your mind to reset so you can approach the problem with a clear head.
Accept your feelings
____18____ Acknowledging your emotions is the first step to processing them. You might say to yourself, “I am upset that this happened,” or write down exactly why you feel this way. Suppressing (压抑) your feelings often makes them stronger later, so let them out in a healthy manner.
Look at the big picture
Try to view the situation objectively, as if you were a bystander. Is it truly a disaster, or just a temporary inconvenience? Make a list of pros and cons. You will likely find something positive or a lesson you wouldn’t have learned otherwise. Remember that some things are simply out of your control, like the weather or other people’s actions. ____19____
Focus on solutions
Finally, adjust your expectations and find a new path. If Plan A fails, activate Plan B. For instance, if your favorite restaurant is closed, try a new one or cook at home. ____20____ By staying flexible and looking for alternatives, you turn a frustrating moment into an opportunity for growth.
A. Instead, take a moment to distance yourself.
B. Once you are calm, do not ignore your disappointment.
C. The destination remains the same even if the route changes.
D. Life is unpredictable, but your faith is always your own choice.
E. So focus on what you can change, rather than what you cannot.
F. Take a deep breath and do whatever you can to focus on solutions.
G. While these emotions are natural, staying stuck in them is not helpful.

Sweat poured down Mark’s face. He had just finished trying out for Oakwood High School’s basketball team, and he knew making it to the team was a pretty sure thing. After all, he wasn’t just good — he was excellent.
Basketball ran in the family — his older brother Reggie was now playing at a top college, and Mark was expected to follow in his brother’s footsteps. But Mark had a secret: his heart was in another sport.
Wiping the sweat from his forehead, Mark jumped on a bus heading home. Through the window, his eyes were drawn to the field where cheerleaders (啦啦队)danced effortlessly. He couldn’t look away. For months now, cheerleading had been on his mind. Reaching into his bookbag, he pulled out a poster: CHEERLEADER AUDITIONS (选拔). This was what he really wanted.
Mark knew pursuing cheerleading wouldn’t just be a physical challenge. His family had poured so much hope into his basketball future. But he was tired of living in his brother’s shadow. He was ready to carve his own path.
Six months ago, Mark once told his best friend Darren about his dream. “Cheerleading is girly,” Darren said. “You’re so good at basketball. Why throw that away?” Mark stood his ground. “This is where I want to put my strength,” he insisted. Over time, Darren began to understand and support him. Still, Mark kept his passion hidden from his family.
Secretly, Mark trained with two cheerleaders. Cheerleading didn’t come naturally — every move demanded more than basketball ever had. But month by month, he improved. Maybe, just maybe, he stood a chance of making it to the cheerleading team. But right now, after his basketball tryout, he had to face his family.
As soon as Mark arrived home, his parents were at the door.
“So…?” his father asked.
“The tryout? It went well.” Mark replied, staring at his feet. Everyone in the family was smiling…except Mark. Still, he knew what had to be done.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Gathering courage, Mark announced, “I don’t want to play basketball anymore.”

【答案】4. A 5. A 6. B 7. B

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. A

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了为了应对龙井茶采摘季劳动力缺乏的问题,研究团队开发研制了一种采茶机器人。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段““The beautiful forms of a bud with one leaf or a bud with two leaves are often acknowledged as quality tea. And the picking work of such tea leaves has relied largely on hand-operated work, very difficult to be replaced by machines,” said Jia Jiangming, developer of the robot.”(该机器人的开发人员贾江明说:“一片叶子的花蕾或两片叶子的芽的美丽形状通常被认为是优质茶叶。而这种茶叶的采摘工作在很大程度上依赖手工操作,很难被机器取代。”。)及第三段“However, most of the tea pickers in the production areas of Longjing tea are all in their 60s, few are in their 50s, and young people are not willing to land jobs in the industry.”(然而,龙井茶产区的采茶工人大多都是60多岁,50多岁的人很少,年轻人也不愿意在这个行业找到工作。)

A. Cold. B. Playful. C. Serious. D. Convincing.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. B

【答案】16. G 17. A 18. B 19. E 20. C

【答案】范文
A Small Act Warms My Heart
Just as a proverb goes, “Kindness is the sunshine that warms the heart.” An experience of mine fully illustrates the power of small acts of kindness.
One rainy afternoon, I was stuck at the canteen without an umbrella, feeling anxious. My deskmate Bob, who noticed my trouble, immediately walked over, shared his umbrella with me and chatted gently to comfort me. His warmth quickly drove away the coldness of the rain.
This small act set me reflecting deeply. Kindness doesn’t lie in great deeds but in ordinary daily gestures. Only when everyone offers a helping hand, can we make our campus warmer and more harmonious.

【答案】 Gathering courage, Mark announced, “I don’t want to play basketball anymore.” The smiles on his parents’ faces froze instantly. “What do you mean?” his father asked in surprise. Taking a deep breath, Mark explained that his true passion was cheerleading although he was good at basketball. The room fell silent. His parents exchanged confused looks, struggling to understand. Mark felt his heart pounding but continued, saying he had been training for months. Just when the tension seemed unbearable, his mother finally spoke gently, “If this is what you really love, you deserve a chance — and we’ll always stand by you.” His father hesitated, then nodded slowly.
A week later, it was time for the cheerleader audition. Standing on the field, Mark felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. Remembering the countless hours of practice, he pushed aside his doubts and focused on every move. When the music started, he jumped, turned and lifted with confidence. His strength and determination impressed the judges and the crowd. When the results were announced, Mark heard his name among those selected. At that moment, he spotted his parents in the stands, clapping proudly. He realized that by following his heart, he had finally stepped out of his brother’s shadow and started his own journey.
