Shay Taylor once walked the halls of Yale New Haven Hospital with a mop and cleaning cart. Soon, she will return — this time as a doctor, with a stethoscope around her neck, beginning her training program.
Her journey was unconventional. Raised by a single mother with little knowledge of financial aid or college applications, Taylor found herself lost after high school. At 18, she took a practical path: cleaning rooms at the very hospital where she now prepares to work as a doctor. For nearly a decade, she worked tirelessly, cleaning patient rooms and mental health units.
A family accident changed everything. When a house fire left her mother with serious lung issues, doctors kept saying her mother’s pain was mental. Refusing to accept this, Taylor reached out to the hospital’s CEO — whose office she had occasionally cleaned. To her surprise, the CEO responded, and her mother finally got the right diagnosis: a rare illness doctors had previously ignored.
That moment brought her new inspiration. “If I could be a voice for my mom,” Taylor realized, “maybe I could do this for other patients.”
Without a clear roadmap, she turned to the Internet to figure out each step. She earned a master’s degree while continuing her cleaning job, saving every dollar for application fees and the MCAT (美国医学院入学考试). Her determination paid off: She was accepted into Howard University College of Medicine and recently matched for her doctor training job — at Yale New Haven Hospital, the same place where her journey began.
Her reaction to the news, showed in a video online, shows her crying with joy and hugging her loved ones tightly. “To come back to the same place — it means everything,” she said.
Taylor hopes her story encourages others who feel uncertain. “I want them not to take ‘no’ as the final answer.”
4. What does the author mean by saying “Her journey was unconventional” in paragraph 2?
A. Her life path was totally ordinary.
B. Her experience was quite unusual.
C. Her growth was full of smooth progress.
D. Her career was fixed and boring.
5. Why did Taylor contact the hospital’s CEO?
A. To apply for a medical assistant position at the hospital.
B. To report the ignored problem in the patient rooms.
C. To seek professional help for her mother’s medical condition.
D. To show her thanks for the cleaning job at the hospital.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Taylor?
A. Hopeful and selfless. B. Careful and patient.
C. Generous and outgoing. D. Hardworking and determined.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. From Cleaning Rooms To Saving Lives B. A Mother’s Battle Against Rare Illness
C. The Road To Becoming A Top Doctor D. A Daughter’s Love For Her Mother
C
When we think about staying healthy, diet and exercise usually come to mind first. But a new study suggests that for teenagers, healthy habits may start with something more basic: sleep timing. New research shows that late bedtimes can lead to poor diet and less physical activity.
Researchers from Penn State College of Medicine examined how different sides of sleep are connected to what teenagers eat and how much they move. Using hand-worn devices (设备) and in-lab sleep studies, the team tracked different sleep factors including bedtime, wake time and sleep regularity (规律性).
The findings showed that teenagers who went to bed after midnight and woke up after 8 a.m. — often called night owls — ate more food and spent more time sitting. They were more likely to snack more, especially late in the day and at night. Because they woke up later, they often did not eat breakfast. Instead, they ate lunch, dinner and a late-evening snack that was typically less healthy than a traditional breakfast.
Perhaps most importantly, the influence of sleep timing and variability on diet and physical activity was two times stronger during school days. When teenagers are forced to follow early school schedules that fight their natural biological clock, the effects on eating and exercising become more obvious. These relationships weakened during school breaks, when teens have more freedom with their schedule.
The researchers suggest that targeting the regularity and timing of teenagers’ sleep could be a key strategy for encouraging healthy eating and physical activity. “A regular sleep schedule is a powerful tool,” said Pura Ballester-Navarro, the study’s first author, “for parents and caregivers, focusing on continuous sleep schedules during the school year may help protect teens’ health.”
8. How did the researchers collect information?
A. By interviewing volunteers. B. By self-reporting daily habits.
C. Through references to former data. D. Through wearable tech and lab observations.
9. What does the underlined term “night owls” in paragraph 3 probably refer to?
A. Those who exercise at night.
B. Those who snack during the night.
C. Those who stay up and get up late.
D. Those who have difficulty falling asleep.
10. When is the effect of sleep timing on health behaviors strongest according to the study?
A. On weekdays. B. During vacations.
C. On weekends. D. During exam periods.
11. What is Pura Ballester-Navarro’s advice for parents and caregivers?
A. Push teens to sleep early.
B. Ask teens to do more physical activities.
C. Help teens stick to a fixed sleep schedule.
D. Encourage teens to form a healthy eating habit.

In today’s digital age, where a vast ocean of information is just a click away, the question arises: can one learn too much? because no individual can grasp the entirety of human knowledge. However, there exists a phenomenon where too much learning can lead to inaction, a state of being flooded with too much information.
Consider a situation where you’re eager to achieve a particular goal. You begin by conducting lots of research, diving deep into the subject. As you absorb more information, it paradoxically (矛盾地) feels like your understanding weakens. Each new concept or strategy reveals further layers, making the goal seem more complicated and out of reach.
This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit (追求) of more information. Although gaining comprehensive knowledge is valuable, that is to say there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this pursuit affects practical application. If learning continuously prevents you from starting, you’ll find yourself stuck, unable to achieve your desired outcomes.
A more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between learning and doing. Gather necessary information and then shift into action quickly, even if you feel somewhat unprepared. This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical (理论的) knowledge alone cannot.
The comparison with a baby learning to walk is a good example here. A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually mastered. This method applies to goal achievement too. By engaging in action, learning from the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually move closer to your goals.
In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s crucial not to let it become a barrier to action. Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interaction of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.
12. What stops people from achieving the goal?
A. The distraction caused by unrelated tasks.
B. The inability to find relevant information.
C. The desire to learn basic concepts or strategies.
D. The confusion caused by too much information.
13. What does the author try to advocate in Paragraphs 3&4?
A. Sticking to continuous learning. B. Gaining as much knowledge as possible.
C. Taking practical action without delay. D. Focusing more on theoretical knowledge.
14. Why is the example “baby learning to walk” mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To compare different learning styles.
B. To illustrate learning through action and experience.
C. To show the significance of making mistakes.
D. To emphasize the necessity for parental guidance.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Process of Absorbing Information B. The Harmony of Learning and Doing
C. The Pursuit of Advanced Knowledge D. The importance of Hands-on Experience

How Should I Use AI Chatbots Like ChatGPT?
Some people say that AI (Artificial Intelligence) can be unpredictable and unreliable. I have seen them give wrong answers many times. But I have also seen these AI programs do amazing things that surprised me. ____16____ Here are some things that AI is especially good at right now:
Explaining concepts at different levels
I have been using AI as my personal tutor. If I start a new topic, I will ask it to explain the idea at a high school level so that I can understand the basics. ____17____ Using an infinitely patient tutor to guide me through new subjects feels like a “superpower” which helps me learn faster.
Getting help with creative work
AI can also be a good tool to help you find new ideas. If you are trying to prepare questions for an interview or write a story, AI can give you some thoughtful suggestions. ____18____ As a famous professor said, “AI provides a way of giving yourself a push when you are stuck.”
Practicing for real-world tasks
____19____ When I had to have a difficult talk with a friend, I asked an AI program to play a role-playing game with me. “Pretend you are my friend, and react the way you think my friend might react,” I told it. Then I practiced the conversation. It made me feel more confident. Although chatbots cannot replace real human friendship, they can offer us basic advice and feedback without judging us.
Summarizing large amounts of text
One of the most powerful abilities of AI is to quickly summarize long articles. I have used AI to “read” long articles and difficult papers, after which it tells me the most important points. Usually they can find the main ideas correctly, even if some details are missing. ____20____
A. However, it often brings us a lot of trouble in our daily life.
B. If I am still confused, I will ask it to explain again at a lower level.
C. I use AI to practice for tasks that I find difficult or even frightening.
D. This helps people overcome difficulties and start hard projects easily.
E. It saves me a lot of time when I need to deal with complex information.
F. Actually, they can be very helpful if we know how to use them properly.
G. Modern technology is changing the way we talk with our family members.

In a small country school, there lived two close friends named Ray and Toby. Ray came from a wealthy family, while Toby’s family struggled to make ends meet. Despite their differences, the two were inseparable and shared a deep bond of friendship. They spent countless hours together, whether it was playing games after school, helping each other with homework, or simply sharing stories under the shade of the old banyan tree.
On a sunny afternoon, Ray brought his precious stamp collection to school, eager to show Toby his latest treasure — a rare (稀有的) stamp gifted by his uncle. Toby, who had never seen such beautiful stamps before, stroked the stamps gently, his eyes wide with wonder. “Such an amazing collection This rare stamp is incredible, Ray!” He exclaimed with admiration. After school, Ray packed the stamps back into his schoolbag and returned home, his heart light with the joy of sharing his passion with his best friend.
However, the next morning, Ray’s joy turned to panic when he discovered that the rare stamp was missing. He tore through his room, searching every corner and every book, but the stamp was nowhere to be found. His heart sank as a troubling thought crowded his mind — Toby was the only one who had got up close and personal with the stamps. Could he have taken it?
The next day at school, he confronted Toby with anger. “Did you take my stamp?” he asked directly, searching Toby’s face for any sign of guilt. Toby, shocked by his questioning, replied with mixed feelings, “No, Ray! I would never take anything that belongs to you. You’re my best friend.”
But Ray, consumed by frustration and disappointment, couldn’t let go of his doubts. “You were the only one who saw it,” he said coldly. “If you hadn’t taken it, then where could it be?” Deeply hurt by Ray’s lack of trust, Toby turned away without another word, his heart heavy with the weight of the accusation (控诉).
The days that followed were filled with an uncomfortable silence between the two friends. They avoided each other, the once-strong bond damaged by the loss of the stamp.

【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A

【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. C

D
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文为一篇说明文。在数字时代,过量的信息会造成学习停滞的问题,因此,在学习过程中,实践经验能帮助我们更全面的理解学习的知识,从而实现目标。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“However, there exists a phenomenon where too much learning can lead to inaction, a state of being flooded with too much information. (然而,有一种现象是,过度学习可能导致无所作为,一种被太多信息淹没的状态)”可知,数字时代给学习提供太多的信息,这些信息给人们带来困惑,由此可知,是这些信息带来的困惑阻止了人们达到学习的目标。故选D项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit (追求) of more information. Although gaining comprehensive knowledge is valuable, that is to say there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this pursuit affects practical application.(这种情况是一种常见的误区:对更多信息的无休止追求。
根据第四段“This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical knowledge alone cannot. (这通常是最好的学习方式,因为实践经验提供了理论知识无法提供的见解)”可知,学习的最好方法是通过实践去积累经验,结合第五段“A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually mastered. This method applies to goal achievement too. By engaging in action, learning from the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually move closer to your goals.(婴儿并非通过坐着思考来学会走路的,而是通过尝试走路、摔倒,然后从每次摔倒中了解哪些方法有效、哪些无效来学习的。通过不断努力,最终能够掌握走路的技能。这种方法同样适用于目标的实现。通过采取行动、从结果中学习并相应地调整,你会逐渐朝着目标迈进)”可知,婴儿是通过不断的实践学习走路,在行动中不断地积累经验,由此可知,第五段通过“婴儿学习走路”的例子来解释通过行动和经验来学习这个观点。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章全文,尤其是最后一段“In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s crucial not to let it become a barrier to action. Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interaction of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.(总之,追求知识固然重要,但切不可让它成为行动的阻碍。学习应当是行动的垫脚石,而非目的本身。只有通过获取知识并加以应用的过程,我们才能真正朝着自己的目标迈进)”可知,在追求知识价值时,不能将其称为行动的障碍,由此可知,本文介绍在学习过程中,应将信息和实践相结合,这样能更好地实现目标,所以标题“学与做的和谐”与本文主旨相符。故选B项。

【答案】【参考范文】
Three days later, when Ray was tidying his desk, something dropped from his math textbook. Bending down quickly, he picked it up and his eyes widened. The rare stamp he had lost was right there! His face turned red as he realized the truth that he must have forgotten to put it back in his bag after showing it to Toby. Memories of their argument rushed into his mind, and guilt was full of his chest. He had hurt his best friend without cause. Determined to fix things, Ray ran toward the banyan tree where Toby often sat, the stamp clutched tightly in his hand.
Ray’s sudden rushing toward him took Toby by surprise. “Toby, I’m so sorry!” Ray said, out of breath and holding out the stamp. “I found it in my pocket. I shouldn’t have accused you. You were right. You’d never take anything from me.” Toby stared at the stamp, then at Ray’s red eyes. A slow smile spread across his face. “It’s okay, Ray. Friends make mistakes, but we trust each other, right?” Ray nodded, and they walked back to the banyan tree, laughing as if the silence had never existed. Their bond, once broken, was now stronger than before.
