A: So, what do you think caused King Tut's death? B: Well, some people thought enemies killed him by hitting his head. But that was just an opinion, not a fact. A: Right. The CT scan showed he had a broken leg. That must have been very painful. B: Yes, and the DNA test showed he had a serious disease. So he might have died from the disease, or maybe from the leg infection. A: I think it might be a combination of both. He was weak from the disease, and the leg injury made it worse. B: That makes sense. It can't be just the head injury, because the scan didn't find any real evidence for that. A: Exactly. So we can infer that he probably died from a disease, and the broken leg could have been a secondary cause. B: I agree. It must have been a sad ending for such a young king 2e Look at the photo. Discuss what it could be about. 3a Read the conversation. Where did this conversation probably take place? Guide: Follow me, please. Does anybody know what this is? Rose: That could be a mummy! Guide: Well, it’s similar to a mummy. It is actually called Xin Zhui, also known as Lady Dai. She died in 163BCE. In 1972, archaeologists found her body in almost perfect condition. She still had her own hair and a soft body. Adam: Wow! How did the ancient people keep her body in such good condition? Guide: That’s still a mystery. But it’s believed she must have lived a wealthy life. Archaeologists found her body along with thousands of ancient items. Look at this piece of clothing. Can you guess what it might be made of? 3a Read the conversation. Where did this conversation probably take place? Adam: It looks so thin. It can’t be very heavy. Could it be made of cotton or silk? Guide: It is made of silk. It’s only about 49 grams, or 0.1 pounds. And it can be folded into a small matchbox. Rose: Amazing! Ancient Chinese people must have been really good at making silk clothing. Guide: That’s correct! They might be in a museum. 3b Complete the two statements and find the supporting details in the conversation. 1. Lady Dai must ... 2. Ancient Chinese people must... Lady Dai must have lived a wealthy life. Ancient Chinese people must have been really good at making silk clothing. Archaeologists found her body along with thousands of ancient items. It’s only about 49 grams, or 0.1 pounds. And it can be folded into a small matchbox. 3c Listen to the conversation. Pay attention to how the guide encourages the visitors to talk. Then role-play the conversation. Does anybody know what this is? Can you guess what it might be made of? The guide uses questions to encourage the visitors to talk. 3d Act as a tour guide and introduce an ancient object to foreign visitors. Use questions to engage your listeners. Does anybody know about its background? Can you guess what / where / when...? What do you find the most amazing / interesting about it? What stories do you think it might tell? What do you want to know about it? How does it make you feel? Guide:  Welcome, everyone! Follow me, please. Does anybody know about the background of this piece of clothing?
