Life in modern cities has more in common with that in ancient Rome than you might think. Fried chicken is a kind of popular fast food today, because it cooks fast in hot oil. It’s great for people who want meat without waiting. A study found ancient Romans did something similar. They often fried thrushes (small songbirds) and sold them on the streets.
Pollentia is an ancient city on the island of Mallorca. Not long ago, scientists found something exciting on the island—a fast food stall from Roman times. Near the food stall is a 4-metre-deep waste pit (垃圾坑). Inside the pit, scientists found animal bones and other waste. One of the most surprising findings is the bones of thrushes. This shows that they were part of the Roman menu. Alejandro Valenzuela, the leader of the study, says the findings show how Romans used seasonal foods for quick meals.
After studying the bird bones, scientists found there were many thrush skulls and breastbones (头骨和胸骨), but not many leg and wing bones. This suggests people cooked and ate the parts with more meat and threw the remains into the pit. Historical records also show that some people caught birds and sold them to vendors. The vendors then cooked and sold them in stalls.
Besides thrushes, the pit had bones from chickens and rabbits too. This shows the Roman menu was diverse, not just birds. So, ancient Romans were a lot like us — they loved quick, tasty meals too!
1.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By giving some examples.
B.By telling a historical story.
C.By explaining the meaning of “fast food”.
D.By comparing modern fast food with ancient Roman food.
2.What did scientists find in the waste pit?
A.Ancient menus. B.Tools for frying food.
C.Recipes for Roman dishes. D.Bones of thrushes and other animals.
3.Why were there not many thrush leg and wing bones in the pit?
A.People sold them. B.People ate those parts.
C.They broke down quickly. D.People used them for medicine.
4.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Bones. B.Birds. C.Records. D.Scientists.
5.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Fried food first appeared in ancient Rome.
B.Ancient Romans lived in cities similar to modern ones.
C.Thrushes were the most popular food in ancient Rome.
D.Ancient Romans also loved quick and tasty meals like modern people.

2.第二段中“Inside the pit, scientists found animal bones… One of the most surprising findings is the bones of thrushes.”以及第四段“Besides thrushes, the pit had bones from chickens and rabbits too.”
3.第三段“After studying the bird bones, scientists found there were many thrush skulls and breastbones, but not many leg and wing bones.” 文中接着解释“This suggests people cooked and ate the parts with more meat…”,暗示肉多的部分(如腿和翅膀)被人们吃掉了,所以剩下的骨头较少。
4.划线词所在句的前文“some people caught birds and sold them to vendors”可知,人们捕捉的是鸟,卖给商贩后,商贩烹饪并出售的自然也是这些“鸟”。
5.最后一句总结道“So, ancient Romans were a lot like us — they loved quick, tasty meals too!”,说明古罗马人也像现代人一样喜欢快速且美味的食物。

Rejection, or being refused, hurts a lot. Whether in a professional, social or romantic situation, there’s an especially strong pain if we feel we are not wanted.
1 Such bad memories may remain in our minds for long, just like a heavy rock stuck in our head. Scientist Helen Fisher, who studies human behavior, found rejection and body injury had much in common. Brain tests showed areas connected with physical and mental pain were more active. Time did reduce the painful feelings for many people, but for some they could last for months or years.
Why does rejection hit so hard? When you are socially left out, you will suddenly feel cold and lonely, like being forced out of a forest camp to face wild dangers. 2 Long ago, our ancestors depended on group warmth to stay alive. Being kicked off the group could have meant death, so it was something to be avoided at all costs. Things have changed over time. People today won’t usually have to face such dangers. 3
However, it is not wise to keep away from rejection all the time in modern life. In fact, the fear of being refused hurts us far more than such experience itself. 4 As a result, our social world will become smaller and smaller.
To live a satisfying life, we need to discover our interests and strengths. Meanwhile, we should step out of our comfort zone, bravely try new things and learn to accept failure. 5 We are fully able to overcome the fear of being refused, and this small change will surely bring us unexpected positive results.
A.We should refuse others in a polite way.
B.Most people have been turned down before.
C.This natural feeling comes from ancient times.
D.Many of us worry too much about what others have.
E.Instead of being defeated by difficulty, we can try to manage it.
F.But we still have a strong wish for care and protection from others.
G.If we always avoid being refused, we’ll gradually not dare to take risks.
1.根据文章第一段“Rejection, or being refused, hurts a lot.”以及后文“Such bad memories may remain in our minds for long…” B“Most people have been turned down before.”
2.根据文章第二段“When you are socially left out, you will suddenly feel cold and lonely, like being forced out of a forest camp to face wild dangers.”以及后文“Long ago, our ancestors depended on group warmth to stay alive.” C“This natural feeling comes from ancient times.”
3.根据文章第二段“People today won’t usually have to face such dangers.” F“But we still have a strong wish for care and protection from others.”
4.根据文章第三段“In fact, the fear of being refused hurts us far more than such experience itself.”以及后文“As a result, our social world will become smaller and smaller.” G“If we always avoid being refused, we'll gradually not dare to take risks.”
5.根据文章第四段“Meanwhile, we should step out of our comfort zone, bravely try new things and learn to accept failure.”以及后文“We are fully able to overcome the fear of being refused…” E“Instead of being defeated by difficulty, we can try to manage it.”
