Every other week, more than two dozen boys walk into Lewis C. Cassidy Academics Plus School in West Philadelphia, wearing suits, neckties, and dress shoes. They shake hands with firm grips (紧握) and maintain eye contact while speaking. They are gentlemen carrying themselves with confidence that turns heads.
For many of them, this is their first time to wear a suit. One student puts it plainly, “The first time I ever wore a suit was when I joined the Distinguished Young Gentlemen (DYG). I think I look handsome in it.”
At the heart of all this is Dwayne Eric Frazier, a teacher and retired firefighter. He built the DYG club from scratch, transforming it from an after-school initiative into a registered nonprofit dedicated to impacting lives well beyond the classroom.
Growing up in North Philadelphia, Frazier’s father taught him how to tie a necktie, polish his shoes, and look people in the eye while speaking. Those lessons stuck, following him through military service and through a 26-year career with the Philadelphia Fire Department.
DYG’s roots go back to 1996, when Frazier coached a youth basketball team called the “Distinguished Gentlemen” and used the sport to develop manners among Philadelphia children. The idea stayed with him, and in 2021, with support from a volunteer, he formalized it as an after-school club.
“Emotional intelligence is central,” as Frazier says. “It’s about manners, appearances, self-respect and learning how to think before you speak, not reacting with emotions.” He describes the program’s core values as “respect, responsibility, reading, and resilience (复原力)”.
The dress code (着装规范) matters at DYG, but the curriculum goes much deeper. The club meets weekly after school, with students required to wear suits, neckties, and dress shoes every other week. Frazier models this daily, viewing disciplined dress as a silent statement: “When you dress right, you don’t have to say a word-it speaks for you.”
4. What impression do the boys leave in the first paragraph?
A. They behave decently. B. They are far from professional.
C. They are socially awkward. D. They have rich life experience.
5. What inspired Frazier to run DYG?
A. A youth basketball team. B. His childhood lessons.
C. A volunteer’s suggestion. D. His firefighter training.
6. What is the main focus of DYG according to Frazier?
A. Getting good jobs. B. Becoming famous.
C. Looking good in suits. D. Learning self-control.
7. What can be inferred about Frazier from the last paragraph?
A. He insists on daily uniform wear. B. He thinks dressing well is easy.
C. He leads by example in dress. D. He values discipline as a skill.

The grammar school boy from Stratford-Upon-Avon has made headlines again after a groundbreaking study showed that Shakespeare does benefit children’s literacy and emotional development, but only if they can act him out.
The study found that a drama-based approach to teaching Shakespeare broadened children’s vocabulary, improved the quality of their writing, and enhanced their emotional understanding. “The way actors work makes a big difference to how children use language and how they think about themselves,” said Jacqui O’Hanlon, lead researcher of the study.
The random trial involved hundreds of Year 5 pupils (aged nine and ten) at 45 state primary schools. The children were divided into a target group and a control group. Both groups read a passage from Romeo and Juliet and were asked to write a letter as Romeo after being separated from Juliet. Before writing, the target group took part in a 30-minute drama-based activity, while the control group did not.
It was shown that pupils in the target group drew on a wider vocabulary, used more complicated or rarer words, and wrote at greater length. They also appeared more comfortable writing in role. While pupils in the control group imagined how they themselves would react to being separated from a loved one, children in the target group put themselves in Romeo’s shoes and expressed that character’s emotion.
O’Hanlon said she had been most surprised by the emotional understanding evident in the children’s writing, and that they showed deeper empathy and expressed emotions more vividly. “It is probably related to the drama-based process, where you are used to trying to think and feel as the character,” she added.
But could the results be reproduced with any old dramatists? O’Hanlon said more research would be needed but suggested that Shakespeare’s use of 20,000 words, compared with the everyday 2,000 words, gave a massive expansion of language into children’s lives, which was combined with children using their whole bodies to bring words to life.
8. What does the study encourage children to do?
A. Perform Shakespeare’s works. B. Write their own original plays.
C. Learn Shakespeare’s lines by heart. D. Watch professional acting on stage.
9. Which aspect of the study does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Its procedure. B. Its background.
C. Its purpose. D. Its significance.
10. What impressed O’Hanlon most about the target group’s writing?
A. Passage fluency. B. Emotional depth.
C. Word complexity. D. Plot imagination.
11. What can be learned from the text?
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Learning by doing works best.
C. Reading makes a full man. D. Words are the voice of the mind.
D
Most people have done it without thinking. You’re trying to hear a quiet sound, so you shut your eyes, hoping it will help you focus. It feels natural, almost automatic. Cut out one sense, and sharpen another. That idea has been around for a long time. But that instinct doesn’t always hold up, especially when the world gets loud. In busy, noisy settings, closing your eyes can actually make it harder to hear what matters. Instead of improving focus, it can push the brain in the wrong direction.
To see what really happens, researchers designed a simple but telling experiment. Participants listened to sounds through headphones and background noise played at the same time. Their job was to adjust the volume until each sound became just audible The volunteers repeated this task under different visual conditions. Sometimes their eyes were closed. Other times, they looked at a blank screen.
In later trials, the participants saw images related to the sounds, and finally, videos that matched what they were hearing. The differences were clear. The brain didn’t respond to sound on its own. What people saw changed what they could hear.
“We found that, unlike popular belief, closing one’s eyes actually weakens the ability to detect these sounds,” said Huang, an expert in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. “On the contrary, seeing a moving video matching the sound significantly improves hearing ability.”
The participants struggled more when their eyes were closed, especially in noisy conditions. But when they watched something that matched the sound, their hearing improved. This wasn’t a small shift. It showed that vision and hearing work together more closely than many people realize.
The story changes in quieter settings. Without much background noise, closing your eyes can still help. In those moments, reducing what you see may allow the brain to focus more on very small sounds. But daily life rarely stays quiet. Traffic, conversations, machines, and constant movement fill most environments with noise. In those situations, keeping your eyes open may give the brain an edge.
12. What does the underlined word “instinct” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Nature. B. Consequence. C. Amazement. D. Intervention.
13. Why did researchers vary visual conditions in the experiment?
A. To test the volunteers’ eyesight. B. To compare impacts on hearing.
C. To reduce the background noise. D. To simplify the experimental task.
14. What does Huang’s statement indicate about hearing sensitivity?
A. It has no relation to settings. B. It drops when eyes are closed.
C. It improves without visual aids. D. It remains stable in all settings.
15. What suggestion does the text imply for people in daily noisy life?
A. Ignore visual information. B. Avoid machines and traffic.
C. Close eyes to focus better. D. Keep eyes open to aid hearing.

A couple of months ago, my son Aidan turned 16. He was over the moon about becoming a senior high school student soon. Life was throwing a lot of changes at him, and one of the biggest was related to his older brother, Conor, who had just turned 19, got his driver’s license, and was busy with his own business. I noticed Aidan seem a bit lonely.
That’s when he came up with the idea of starting a dog-walking business. He was so sure his idea was a good one that I gave him permission to hang the signs on the information boards in the four surrounding blocks, advertising the dog-walking business: $3 for half a day, and $5 for a whole day.
Just looking at the smile on his face when he prepared to post the signs, which would begin it all, was magic. Aidan was a great kid and very reliable, and I hoped someone would help him achieve his goals, and fill his summer with confidence and purpose.
The next day, Aidan received a call. A lady had set up an appointment for him to walk her dog. I was so happy and proud to hear the news. But then, it turned out that the “lady” was actually a young girl whose summer responsibility included walking the family dog. Her father wouldn’t pay Aidan to do her job. Aidan’s face fell, but he tried to stay positive.
Then another call came. “This is it!” Aidan said, his eyes lighting up. But it was a prank (恶作剧). He ended up being tricked into going to an address, where he nervously introduced himself to a couple. The couple actually claimed they didn’t contact Aidan, and they didn’t want Aidan to walk their dog, either. And there were others calling to laugh at Aidan and even question why he thought someone would pay him just for walking a dog.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
With one failure after another, Aidan was almost losing heart.

A 5. B 6. D 7. C

A 13. B 14. B 15. D

根据第一段“You’re trying to hear a quiet sound, so you shut your eyes, hoping it will help you focus. It feels natural, almost automatic. Cut out one sense, and sharpen another.(你试图听清一个微弱的声音,于是闭上眼睛,希望这能帮助你集中注意力,这感觉很自然,几乎是自动的。切断一种感官,另一种就会变得敏锐)”和划线词所在句“But that instinct doesn’t always hold up, especially when the world gets loud.(但那种instinct并不总是有效,尤其是当世界变得嘈杂时。)”
根据第三段“The brain didn’t respond to sound on its own. What people saw changed what they could hear.(大脑不会自行对声音做出反应。人们所看到的改变了他们所能听到的)”可知,研究得出的结论是不同的视觉条件会改变人们听到的声音,所以研究者在实验中变换视觉条件是为了对比其对听力的影响。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“We found that, unlike popular belief, closing one’s eyes actually weakens the ability to detect these sounds,(我们发现,与普遍看法相反,闭眼实际上会削弱察觉这些声音的能力)”可知,当闭上眼睛时,人的听力敏感性会下降。
根据最后一段“But daily life rarely stays quiet. Traffic, conversations, machines, and constant movement fill most environments with noise. In those situations, keeping your eyes open may give the brain an edge.(但日常生活很少能保持安静。

此处为固定搭配be expected to do sth.,意为“预计做某事”,所以用动词不定式to come。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
With one failure after another, Aidan was almost losing heart.

Things changed one day when I talked to our neighbor, Sheila.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With one failure after another, Aidan was almost losing heart. Continuous disappointments and ridiculous pranks completely destroyed his initial passion for his small dog-walking business. He had devoted plenty of time and energy to preparing posters and waiting for orders, only to be fooled and doubted by strangers again and again. Gradually, he no longer talked excitedly about his dog-walking plan every day, nor did he check his phone frequently for possible calls. He even decided to take down the signs. Seeing his frustration and self-doubt, I knew my boy needed a little boost. “I know it’s been a rough few days, Aidan, but you didn’t do anything wrong,” I said, trying to comfort him.
Things changed one day when I talked to our neighbor, Sheila. During our casual chat, Sheila mentioned that she was extremely busy with her daily work and had no extra time to walk her pet dog. I sincerely told her about Aidan’s serious attitude, reliable personality and his recent frustrating experience. Deeply touched by his courage and persistence, Sheila decided to give Aidan a precious chance. Overjoyed and grateful, Aidan took the task very seriously every single day. His careful service and responsible attitude won high praise from Sheila. Word soon spread among neighbors, and more people began to trust and support him. Eventually, his small business got on track, helping him regain confidence and harvest precious growth in the summer.
