Elara Voss is a nurse in a coastal town in Australia.
She’d barely thought about birdwatching before — just occasional sightings of seagulls by the beach during her morning walks. It wasn’t until her 10-year-old nephew, Leo, kept asking to “find cool birds” that she started exploring the idea. Leo soon developed a passion for spotting different species, and now leads a small group of kids on weekend bird tours in the local park. Both first got into the hobby through the Bayview Birdwatchers’ Club, a community group set up in 2010. When fewer families joined their monthly events in 2020, Elara, who also runs a weekend craft (手工艺) class for kids, decided to help.
She started the “Junior Ornitho” program, teaching 8-to 12-year-olds how to identify birds. They have to keep careful notes each time. With her support, over 60 kids join for free every autumn for two months. They meet every Saturday morning for two hours, learning to use binoculars (双筒望远镜), recognize bird calls, and draw what they see. Each child gets a small notebook, a pencil, and a waterproof bag. “We focused on common birds first — sparrows, magpies,” Elara said. “They started noticing details, like how a bird’s beak (鸟喙) shape matches what it eats. Before long, their parents started joining too.”
Elara teaches the kids to make bird-shaped keychains, painted stones, and hand-drawn bird cards during craft sessions. Then, she set up “Bird Art Bazaar” at the town’s weekly farmers’ market, where visitors buy these creations. The Bazaar brings in about $180 each week, enough to buy binoculars, print bird guides, and give out nature-themed books as prizes for the best observation notes.
Elara says the best part is seeing kids rush to show her their creations. “Not only are they spending less time indoors, but they’re also learning to care for nature,” she said. “Last week, a group even helped clean up the park to make it better for the birds. That’s more than I could have hoped for.”
4. What made Elara initially get to know birdwatching?
A. Children’s weekend tours. B. Her young nephew’s requests.
C. Occasional beach sightings. D. Community club activities.
5. What are the program’s participants required to do?
A. Attend weekly craft sessions. B. Get their parents’ permission.
C. Bring their own equipment. D. Document their observations.
6. Why did Elara set up Bird Art Bazaar?
A. To promote kids’ artworks. B. To teach bird crafting skills.
C. To develop children’s creativity. D. To keep her program running.
7. According to Elara, which word best describes her program?
A. Rewarding. B. Eventful. C. Challenging. D. Innovative.

The phrase “the world’s smallest violin” is used to joke about someone who’s feeling sorry for themselves, but for some scientists, it’s a mark of pride.
Thanks to the latest nanotechnology, which is a scientific area that deals with making or changing things that are incredibly tiny, a team at the United Kingdom’s Loughborough University recently created what is literally the world’s smallest violin. It’s made of a metal called platinum, and measures just 35 microns long and 13 microns wide — a micron is one millionth of a meter. The “instrument” is thinner than a human hair and makes tiny tardigrades, also called water bears, look big.
Don’t expect to hear any pieces of music played on it, however. In this case, engineers designed a tiny image of a violin instead of a playable instrument. For decades, electronics designers and producers have consistently made products smaller while improving performance. Computer chips (芯片) double their capacity roughly every 1.5 to 2 years, according to Moore’s Law (1965, Intel’s Gordon Moore). Soon, data space will run out, so scientists need better methods for extremely tiny electronics.
One such approach is Nanolithography. It’s similar to using a stencil (模板): cut a violin-shaped hole in a piece of paper, and only the hole gets colored. To make the violin, the scientists first covered a small chip with a special gel (凝胶) (like paper). They made the hole in two steps: use a machine called NanoFrazor (with a tiny heatable needle) to “draw” the violin on the chip, burning the gel where the needle touched, wash away burned gel, leaving a tiny violin-shaped hole in the gel. Next, they covered the chip with platinum, which filled the violin-shaped hole. Finally, they washed off the remaining gel, leaving the tiny metal violin.
The whole process of making the violin took about three hours. But it took the researchers several months to develop the methods they used to create it. “The process has actually laid the groundwork for the research we’re now undertaking.” said Morrison.
8. Why does the author mention tardigrades?
A. To highlight a potential task. B. To introduce a new species.
C. To explain a unique phrase. D. To offer a comparison reference.
9. What was one of the scientists’ purposes in creating such a violin?
A. To play more universal music. B. To push technical boundaries.
C. To find computing limitations. D. To boost super tiny products.
10. What did the scientists do before making the violin-shaped hole?
A. They drew with a heated needle. B. They washed away burned gel.
C. They applied a special gel layer. D. They used platinum coating.
11. What's the best title for the text?
A. Tiniest Violin: A Tech Breakthrough B. Tiniest Violin: Key to Future Tech
C. Tiniest Violin’s Platinum Creation D. Tiniest Violin’s Gel Process

In today’s digital era, the traditional work mode is shifting rapidly. From the changing definition of full-time job to the rise of hybrid (混合) jobs and the importance of flexibility, the employment landscape is transforming.
A full-time job typically means that an employee works the majority of full-time hours per week. In the UK, for instance, full-time hours generally range from 35 to 40 hours a week. In our days, the once-clear distinction between “office jobs” and “work from home jobs” has been eclipsed by the rise of hybrid jobs, which smoothly combine in-person office hours with remote working. The concept of full-time work from home roles has become a significant branch of contemporary employment. The contemporary work environment now understands an office as any place with a reliable Wi-Fi connection, underscoring the importance of digital age networking.
In a society with busy lifestyle, flexible working hours stand out as a significant bonus, offering improved mental health, heightened productivity, a better work-life balance, and so on. This flexibility allows employees to find a pattern that matches both their personal and professional lives. Meanwhile, the ongoing debate between full-time and part-time roles remains. While full-time jobs provide stability and numerous benefits, part-time roles can offer even more flexibility.
The purposes of jobs have changed in the modern work style. Beyond financial reasons, people seek jobs for personal growth, societal contributions, networking, skill development, and a sense of purpose. In the digital age, handling challenges in the modern work field, especially with full-time roles, can sometimes lead to job burnout, making it vital to manage one’s mental well-being. Companies are also adjusting their strategies to handle workplace conflicts. Key approaches to excel in modern roles include continuous learning, flexibility, and a sharp focus on striking a balance between career and personal life. While achieving a balance in today’s work environment can appear challenging, it becomes achievable with the right mindset.
12. What does the underlined word “eclipsed” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Stressed. B. Hidden. C. Reserved. D. Discovered.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?
A. Features of part-time roles. B. Advantages of full-time jobs.
C. Benefits of flexible working hours. D. Trends of remote work.
14. What does the author suggest doing to deal with the modern work’s challenge?
A. Protecting psychological health. B. Choosing part-time jobs.
C. Following company policies. D. Seeking higher salaries.
15. What will the author continue to discuss?
A. Expansions of hybrid employment. B. Advantages from flexible schedules.
C. Definitions of office spaces. D. Methods for work-life balance.

Bard wiped the kitchen counter, watching his mom shift carefully in her wheelchair. A simple task like reaching a high shelf took effort since her accident. He hated seeing her struggle. “All done,Mom!” he said brightly, hiding his worry.Bard, known as the “Idea Factory”at school, was always sketching (草拟) inventions in his notebook. Lately, one idea consumed him: building something to help Mom.
He noticed challenges that Mom faced everywhere — carrying clothes, vacuuming (用吸尘器打扫) around furniture, cooking while seated. It seemed that Mom needed an extra pair of hands for nearly every daily task. His mind raced with solutions: levers, handles, maybe even a robot. He imagined a small, strong machine doing the heavy lifting Mom couldn’t.
The next six months witnessed a marathon of trial and error. His bedroom became a workshop, filled with motors from old toys, sensors bought with saved lunch money, and messed-up wires. His first prototype (原型机), “Helper V1”, was a shoebox on wheels that got stuck on the carpet. Version 2 knocked over a lamp. Friends joked, calling it “Bard’s BeepBoop Buddy”, but he just smiled broadly and kept working.
Nights were spent working on basic commands: “Pick up cloth”, “Move forward slowly”. He taught Helper to recognize Mom’s voice. Slowly, it worked — fetching a dropped book, carrying a grocery bag. It wasn’t perfect, but it helped.
When the school Science Innovation Fair was announced, Bard knew it was his chance. He polished Helper, wrote clear explanations, and practiced his speech. He called his entry “Helping Hands”.
The day of the fair, students crowded around, amazed as the little robot carefully picked up a small box Bard placed on the floor and delivered it to his hand on command. Teachers nodded approvingly. Bard explained his motivation clearly: “My mom is amazing, but some things are hard. Helper isn’t magic, it”s just... extra hands where Mom needs them.”
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Bard and the other contestants were all anxiously waiting for the results.

D. Innovative.
【答案】4. B 5. D 6. D 7. A

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. A

Bard rushed home excitedly. As soon as he opened the door, he showed the shiny medal to his mom and told her every exciting detail of the fair.
