Zhang Heng — A Great Inventor of Ancient China
Zhang Heng (78-139 AD) was one of the greatest scientists and inventors in ancient China. He lived during the Eastern Han Dynasty. He was not only an astronomer but also a mathematician, engineer, and poet.
Zhang Heng is most famous for inventing the world's first seismograph — a device that could detect earthquakes. His seismograph was a large bronze vessel. Around its outside were eight dragon heads, each with a bronze ball in its mouth. Below the dragon heads sat eight bronze toads with their mouths open. When an earthquake occurred, the ball from the dragon in the direction of the quake would fall into the toad's mouth, making a loud sound. This device was able to detect earthquakes from hundreds of kilometers away.
Zhang Heng also made important contributions to astronomy. He created a detailed star map that showed over 2,500 stars. He also invented an early device called the "armillary sphere" to track the movements of the planets.
Zhang Heng's inventions and discoveries were far ahead of his time. His work shows that ancient Chinese people were capable of remarkable scientific achievements. He is remembered as one of the greatest minds in Chinese history.
