Steve Bate is a Paralympic cyclist — with the medals to prove it. He picked up two golds and a bronze at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, and completed the set with a silver at the Tokyo Paralympics. Bate was diagnosed (诊断) with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) in 2011, a condition which could eventually cause him to go blind.
But rather than holding back his thirst for adventure, his diagnosis inspired him to push on. He battled depression after receiving the news, but grew to accept it — and then quickly became determined to make the most of the vision he had, while he had it.
That was what led Bate to tackle El Capitan, one of the most famous rock formations in the world, rising more than 3,000 feet straight up. “The scariest part of El Capitan was finding the way,” Steve says. “I took a route that’s usually pretty clear. If you have normal eyesight, you can’t really get lost. But for me, the scariest thing was worrying I’d get stuck somewhere I couldn’t find my way back from.” Finally, Bate made it through the hardest part of the climb and reached the top of El Capitan. “Pulling myself over the top felt amazing. It made me believe I could do anything,” Steve says.
A month before climbing El Capitan, Bate had attended a Talent Identification day for British Cycling. And soon, he was admitted to a program which would lead him to the Rio 2016 Paralympics. “I was back learning,” Steve says. “For El Capitan, I had to research everything on my own. At British Cycling I could go to anyone and ask, and they would give me the best advice — whether it was on nutrition, training or strength. I loved it.”
Although going blind still frightened him in many ways, Steve Bate said he had come to see it as a huge challenge — and as an opportunity to reach his full potential, which excited him most.
24.What did Bate decide to do after accepting his medical condition?
A.Use his eyesight to the fullest. B.Give up his desire for adventures.
C.Battle depression caused by his diagnosis. D.Wait for treatment to improve his eyesight.
25.How did topping El Capitan affect Bate?
A.It enhanced his confidence. B.It built up his sense of direction.
C.It removed his fear of climbing. D.It helped him become a celebrity.
26.What did Bate like about being with British Cycling?
A.He could compete regularly. B.He could do heavy exercise.
C.He could get direct support. D.He could face his weakness.
27.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Visible Days in the Past B.A Race to the Finish Line
C.A Journey from Adventure to Medals D.Strength Facing Darkness
Many people want to spend less time on their phones. While some suggest extreme ideas like printing out your Instagram feed, a new device called the Brick is becoming a popular solution. The small grey cube, about the size of a headphone case, claims to reduce screen time by three hours a day. To use it, you choose the apps you want to block and touch your phone to the device. To unblock your apps, you must physically tap the phone against the cube again. Reviewers declare that the Brick changed their lives.
The Brick is part of a broader trend known as anti-tech tech. There are now many tools designed to remove digital temptations. For example, on an app called Forest, the longer you stay off your phone, the more virtual trees grow; eventually, the firm plants a real tree in your honor. Some people are even switching back to “dumb phones”— old-fashioned mobiles without touch screens — which are now seen as a cool and wise choice.
The reason behind this trend is digital overload. Many young adults feel they must always be reachable and always be connected. According to a survey, nearly 40% of young people sleep with their phones next to them. This constant connection can lead to brainrot — a term used to describe the mental exhaustion caused by spending too much time online. People are also increasingly worried about their data privacy and harmful content found on social media.
However, there is a paradox at the heart of this movement. While many young people declare they want an offline life, they often share this message on TikTok. Most digital detoxes (戒断) fail because apps are designed to draw us back.
Thomas Driver, co-founder of the Brick, says the secret to anti-tech tech is to place distractions out of reach. By physically separating the unblocking tool from the phone, temptation is sidelined.
28.What is the Brick according to paragraph 1?
A.An app that grows virtual trees.
B.A headphone case that is easy to carry.
C.A device that helps reduce phone usage.
D.A smartphone that increases screen time.
29.Why does the author mention Forest and dumb phones?
A.To introduce new phone apps. B.To warn people of digital risks.
C.To explain the trend of anti-tech tech. D.To show they are better than the Brick.
30.What does the underlined word “paradox” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.A clear solution. B.A self-contradictory situation.
C.A popular agreement. D.A technological breakthrough.
31.Which of the following is the most suitable title for the passage?
A.Digital Overload: A Problem to Solve
B.The Brick: Blocking the Apps Forever
C.Dumb Phones: Best Ways to Disconnect
D.Anti-Tech Tech: Fighting Phone Addiction
Many kids try to avoid their duties or tell small lies to escape punishment. Parents often wonder how to help kids build true honesty and responsibility without strict scolding (责骂). In fact, character building depends on daily, gentle guidance. Here are four effective ways.
Set clear rules and stick to consistent expectations. 32 Set simple, sincere rules for daily behavior, especially about telling the truth and taking responsibility. Consistency is the key to rule education. When rules stay the same, kids gradually form stable moral habits.
33 Kids learn values largely from adult behavior. If parents often excuse their own mistakes or hide small faults, kids will believe dishonesty is acceptable. Model honest and responsible behavior yourself. Showing sincere attitudes toward mistakes is the most powerful family education.
Encourage self-responsibility through small challenges. Not all kids are naturally willing to take responsibility. 34 They refuse to face their own errors. Parents can offer proper chances for independent decision-making. Allow kids to bear the natural results of their behavior instead of always fixing problems for them.
Treat mistakes as growth opportunities. Most kids lie or avoid duties simply out of fear of blame. It is vital to let kids know mistakes are normal in growth. When kids fail to keep promises or hide the truth, do not criticize them sharply. Instead, communicate gently and guide them to correct errors. 35
Building honesty and responsibility is never an overnight achievement. 36 But every patient instruction will finally shape their trustworthy personalities, benefiting their whole life.
A.Set a good personal example.
B.Some kids are used to relying on others.
C.Kids always care too much about others’ opinions.
D.These help them choose honesty actively next time.
E.Praise kids constantly regardless of their performance.
F.The progress of character building can be extremely slow.
G.Kids need definite standards to understand what is right and wrong.

In Rong’an County, Guangxi, known as the “home of kumquats (金桔),” a quiet 52 (transform) has been underway. Since the national rural revitalization (振兴) strategy was launched, the local government 53 (encourage) farmers to move away from traditional farming methods and embrace modern agricultural techniques.
The results speak for 54 (they). Today, the total area of kumquat cultivation in Rong’an has reached 226,000 acres, producing an annual output of over 260,000 tons. The real change lies not in quantity 55 in quality. Local factories now process the fruit into high-value products, from dried kumquats to skincare items, 56 (create) thousands of jobs for villagers who once had to leave their hometowns for work.
Perhaps even more encouraging is 57 return of young people. Many who once worked in big cities have come back to start online businesses, selling local products 58 livestreaming platforms. “We used to believe that success meant leaving,” said a young farmer 59 orchard (果园) has now become a fine example. He sticks to carrying out 60 (sustain) agriculture in his hometown. “Now we know we can build a future right here.”
As the success of Rong’an demonstrates, rural revitalization is not about turning villages into cities. Instead, it is about discovering the unique value of each place and giving local people the tools they need 61 (grow) their own future.

My Dad, Matt, lost his job and when Christmas came, we had no money at all. On Christmas Eve, Dad took me into our yard. I was five that year and I sat next to Dad and we looked up at the sky, “Pick out your favorite star,” Dad said. He told me I could have one star for keeps. He said it was my Christmas present.
“You can’t give me a star! No one owns the stars.” “That’s right, Betty. No one else owns them. You just have to claim it before anyone else does.”
I looked up to the stars and tried to figure out which was the best one. I could see hundreds, maybe thousands or even millions, hanging in the clear sky. There was one in particular, in the west above the mountains but low in the sky, which shone more brightly than all the rest. I pointed and claimed it. Dad smiled, telling me I chose Venus. It looked bigger and brighter because it was much closer than other stars. It reflected the light of the sun. “I like it anyway,” I said. “Alright,” Dad agreed. “It’s Christmas. You can have a planet if you want.”
From then on, Venus got a new name in our family, Betty’s Planet. After Christmas, Dad found another job in the mine and he worked like mad. Gradually, we could make ends meet and there were presents under the Christmas tree and cakes when it was my birthday. But deep down, no present could match Betty’s Planet.
Years later, I entered university, majoring in engineering, but I stuck to my passion for astronomy in my spare time. In my junior year, I became the first undergraduate ever to discover an asteroid (小行星) when examining images of thousands of asteroids on my computer, due to which I was given the right to name this asteroid according to the tradition of International Astronomical Union.
注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
This time, I decided to give Dad a present.

W: Hi Ken, how do you usually go to work?
M: I usually go to work by bus. What about you?
W: By car. But I’m ready to walk to work. I need to take exercise.
2.C
W: Excuse me. Would you mind keeping an eye on my books? They’re too heavy. I just need to grab some snacks at the grocery store.
M: No problem. But hurry. I’ve got a lot of math exercises to finish.
W: OK.
3.C
M: Hey, Sally. I’ve got Andrew’s book bag here. Can you give it to him?
W: I won’t see him today, Harry.
M: It has his science books in it. Will you see him tomorrow?
W: Umm, we have science together, the day after tomorrow. I’ll give it to him then!
4.A
W: I tried an AI-powered store yesterday. You scan the phone at the gate, grab what you need, and just walk out — no queues.
M: The convenience is great, and the receipt appears in the app within seconds.
W: True, but I’m worried about my data — every item’s tied to my account.
5.B
W: Did you notice the new soups that are on sale at the supermarket? I’ve never heard of some of the flavors.
M: Yeah, I saw them. Maybe they’re trying out different recipes to get more customers.
W: Maybe, but some don’t even sound like soup at all.
6.C 7.A
W: May I help you, sir?
M: Yes. My name is Bill Thomas, and I have an appointment with Dr. Wilson at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
W: Yeah, I see it here on his schedule.
M: Well, I wonder whether he is available earlier on the same day.
W: I’m sorry, but Dr. Wilson will be tied up in a meeting until noon, and he has two appointments before yours when he gets back from lunch. There will be a later appointment time open, at 4:30 p.m., if that would help you. Or you could see him at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday.
M: No, thank you. I think I’ll just arrange my own schedule again.
8.B 9.C
M: Good morning. This is Far and Away Travel Agents. How can I help you today?
W: Hello. I’d like to book a mid-week break to Berlin at the end of this month.
M: Let’s see... Unfortunately, all mid-week trips to Berlin in July are fully booked unless there’s a cancelation. But we do have availability in August.
W: Oh no! I can’t go any other time.
M: It’s much cheaper to go on holiday in the middle of the week than at the weekend. That’s why mid-week holidays always sell out very quickly. You need to book earlier.
W: Can you suggest anything else?
M: Well, Paris is very nice in July. Let’s see what’s available…

M: Hey Lily, still reading that book about alien contact?
W: Yes, it’s for my science presentation tomorrow. It makes me wonder if we should really reach out to aliens.
M: I don’t think we should. Some people think aliens might not even exist, or they are too far away to reach. But what if they do receive our signals and aren’t friendly? Inviting them here could bring a total disaster to humanity.
W: I understand your fear. But think about the bright side. Exploring space isn’t just about finding aliens. The technology we develop for space can be used to solve resource problems on Earth.

M: Good Times Holidays. John speaking. How may I help you?
W: Hello. I’m calling to complain about a holiday we’ve just had.
M: I’m sorry to hear about that. So what was the problem you encountered?
W: We just got back on January the 21st from a five-day holiday. There were two things that disappointed us. In the first place, we were told that a taxi would meet us at the station and take us straight to the house. But in fact, there wasn’t one there. We had to wait for ages and then pay for one ourselves.
M: OK. I’ll look into that.
W: And we’d been promised there would be a bicycle for each of us stored at the house. But there were only three, which is no good for a family of four.
M: OK. Well, I’ll check into that as well. Now, if you give me a few hours, I’ll get back to you this afternoon and then we can discuss.

W: Students from high school are to be quizzed on whether they can cook five hot meals, and how often they should change their sheets. The scheme is supported by the government to help them prepare for university. Ministers are urging schools to put on special workshops for students aged 16-18 to ensure they feel comfortable with the preparation of leaving home. The course, designed by the university accommodation provider Unite Students, will teach students how to manage their finances and how to live independently. According to the course materials, teachers should ask students questions which may not have occurred to them, such as “What is the price of a litre of milk?” and “List 5 hot meals you can cook.” and “How often will you wash your sheets once you move out of home?” Damian Hinds, the Education Secretary, said, “We are conscious that going to university is one of the most exciting things that happens in your life, but it can also be very challenging.” He said that an important part of education is preparing children for adulthood, so “it is right that we teach them what to expect for life after school”.

通读全文,尤其是尾段中的“Although going blind still frightened him in many ways, Steve Bate said he had come to see it as a huge challenge — and as an opportunity to reach his full potential, which excited him most.(尽管失明依旧在很多方面让他心生恐惧,史蒂夫·贝特说他已然将其视作一项巨大挑战——同时也是发掘自身全部潜能的机遇,这一点最令他振奋。)”

根据文章第一段中的“While some suggest extreme ideas like printing out your Instagram feed, a new device called the Brick is becoming a popular solution. The small grey cube, about the size of a headphone case, claims to reduce screen time by three hours a day. (尽管有人提出诸如打印出你的Instagram动态等极端想法,但一种名为Brick的新设备正逐渐成为热门解决方案。这个小巧的灰色立方体,大小约相当于耳机盒,声称每天可减少三小时的屏幕使用时间。)”可知,Brick 是一种帮助减少手机使用时间的设备。
29.推理判断题。根据文章第二段中的“For example, on an app called Forest, the longer you stay off your phone, the more virtual trees grow; eventually, the firm plants a real tree in your honor. Some people are even switching back to “dumb phones”—old-fashioned mobiles without touch screens—which are now seen as a cool and wise choice. (例如,在一款名为“Forest”的应用程序中,你离手机越久,虚拟的树木就会长得越多;最终,公司会为你种植一棵真正的树。有些人甚至又开始使用“傻瓜手机”——即没有触摸屏的传统手机,如今这些手机被视为一种时尚而明智的选择。)”可知,作者提到 Forest应用程序和“傻瓜手机”是为了举例说明“反科技科技”这一趋势。
30.词句猜测题。根据文章第四段中的“While many young people declare they want an offline life, they often share this message on TikTok.

具体说明规则内容及一致性的重要性,因此G项“Kids need definite standards to understand what is right and wrong.

Model honest and responsible behavior yourself. 主要建议父母以身作则,通过自身行为影响孩子,因此A项“Set a good personal example. Parents can offer proper chances for independent decision-making. 指出这类孩子存在的问题,并建议父母给予自主决策权,因此B项“Some kids are used to relying on others.
35.上文“When kids fail to keep promises or hide the truth, do not criticize them sharply. Instead, communicate gently and guide them to correct errors. (当孩子未能遵守承诺或隐瞒真相时,不要严厉批评他们。相反,应温和地与他们沟通,并引导他们纠正错误。)”建议温和沟通、引导纠错,因此D项“These help them choose honesty actively next time. (这些帮助他们下次主动选择诚实。)”符合语境,说明其积极效果,承接上文。
36.上文“Building honesty and responsibility is never an overnight achievement. (建立诚实与责任感从来都不是一蹴而就的事。)”表明培养诚实与责任感不可操之过急,下文“But every patient instruction will finally shape their trustworthy personalities, benefiting their whole life. (但每一次耐心的指导最终都会塑造他们值得信赖的个性,使他们的一生受益。)”包含转折,指出耐心的指导终会收获成果,因此F项“The progress of character building can be extremely slow. (品格建设的进展可能非常缓慢。)”符合语境,强调过程的缓慢,承接上文,和下文形成转折关系。

Dear classmates,
Today, I’d like to discuss time management, which is crucial and challenging for us senior students.
Many of us struggle with procrastination, unbalanced study schedules and unclear priorities. As a result, we often feel stressed and inefficient.
To address these issues, I suggest making a weekly plan that identifies important tasks first. Breaking big assignments into smaller steps also helps reduce pressure. Moreover, it is advisable that phone use during study time be limited, which can improve focus. Remember, not only does good time management boost our academic performance, but it also brings us a more balanced life.
That’s all. Thank you for listening.

This time, I decided to give Dad a present. I named the asteroid “Matt’s Star” to honor him. When I told Dad about it on the phone, he fell silent for a while. Then he said, “Betty, that’s the best gift I’ve ever received.” I explained that the asteroid was small but special, just like the star he gave me years ago. I also told him that whenever he looked up at the sky, he could think of it as a symbol of our love, which would never fade.
Dad said he owed me an apology for that Christmas. “I was so poor then that I couldn’t give you a real present,” he said with a sigh. I told him that Betty’s Planet was the most precious gift because it taught me to find joy in simple things. I added that if there was no that Christmas, I might not have developed a love for astronomy, which led me to discover the asteroid. Dad laughed and said he was proud of me, and from that day on, we often talked about “our stars” on the phone.
