It was said that the raincoat was invented by Macintosh in 1823. Macintosh was a(n) 4 in an eraser factory in Scotland. One day, he poured the rubber liquid (橡胶液体) over his coat carelessly when making erasers. He was too 5 to clean it and went back home with the dirty coat. On the way home, it rained heavily. Macintosh didn't have an umbrella, so he had to run home 6 . When he got home, he 7 the wet clothes. To his surprise, the area of the coat with rubber over wasn't wet. "Why not make a rubber raincoat?" Macintosh told 8 . The next day, he brushed the rubber liquid all over his coat. He wore the "rubber coat" on rainy days and took a walk outside to test if it could really keep 9 the rain. Surprisingly, the clothes inside the" rubber coat" were not wet at all. So the raincoat was invented in this way.

From the earliest days, humans have dreamed of flying. Over the last century, great 1 has been made in the world of air transport (航空运输). But few inventions are 2 for personal use. Now, we may soon have a new choice—the Volonaut Airbike, a flying machine that can turn common people into 3 and let them fly like in science-fiction movies.
4 by Tomasz Patan from Poland, the Volonaut Airbike is described as a "superbike for the skies". It carries one person and can reach a speed of 200 kilometers per hour. It can 5 and land straightly. It even can stay in the air.
The Volonaut Airbike is 6 , it has no cockpit, propellers or wings (座舱,螺旋桨,翼部). It is 7 by jet propulsion (喷气推进). The pilot sits on a seat like on a motorbike and rises into the air, controlling the bike through a special helmet. A flight computer turns body movements into real-time flight changes.
Because special materials are 8 , the superbike is seven times lighter than a common motorbike. Thanks to its small size and weight, the Volonaut Airbike can 9 reach places that were hard to get before. This opens new 10 for transportation in crowded cities, faraway areas, or even disaster areas.

Hello, everyone! Here comes this month's School Brain Game. We're going to talk about what you would like to invent (发明). Let your imagination run wild and post (发布) your ideas below.
—Andrew, Student Union President
Students have a lot of homework. They often go to bed late and wake up early for school. I'd like to invent a machine to help you ________ in the morning without waking you up. It would carefully pick you up, take you to the bathroom and brush your teeth. It would get you dressed and set you down at the dining room table. Then it would gently wake you for breakfast. You'd go to school on time while still getting a good night's sleep!
—Michelle, from Grade 9
I'd invent a time machine that could take us to any day in history. We would finally be able to answer questions like "What killed all the dinosaurs?" Just think how different life would be if every question about history could be answered. We would know almost everything. And we could visit the past or the future to see how humans have changed. Imagine visiting your ancestors (祖先)! Imagine going to the future to tell people about life in the past! Just think about all that fun!
—Troy, from Grade 8
A flying car! You could go anywhere you wanted. It could prevent traffic jams (堵塞) during rush hour. We wouldn't have to build so many highways. There would be more space to plant trees. The air would be cleaner and fresher. My flying car would be powered by solar energy (太阳能). We could save the Earth and all the plants and animals too.

Guillermo González Camarena, a Mexican inventor, was born in 1917. As a child, he loved building things. He made electric toys when he was young. By age 12, he had built a radio with spare parts. At 13, he began studying engineering.
He was interested in a new technology of his time: television. Television works by sending pictures and sound to a screen using electrical signals. The first moving images were sent to TVs in the 1920s. Few people had TVs then, but many knew TV would be an important way to learn about the world.
Early televisions had many weak points.. They could only show black-and-white images, not color ones. Because of this, many inventors worked to solve these problems.
González Camarena was one of the first with a solution. In 1940, he made a "tri-chromatic" (three-color) device, which used three colors: red, blue, and green. When it was connected to a black-and-white TV, people could see color images.
The invention was a huge success. But the device was very expensive to make. He wanted everyone to have color TV, so he kept on working to make it cost less.
By the early 1960s, he invented a cheaper way to show color on TV. He called it the "Simplified Bi-color System (SBCS)." It cost much less to produce. Starting in 1965, many SBCS TVs were made and sold in Mexico.
González Camarena also believed that TV was important to educate children. His ideas helped create Mexico's first educational TV network, "Telesecundaria," which is still used today.
Guillermo González Camarena passed away on April 18, 1965. Today, he is remembered as one of Mexico's greatest inventors.
4.Why did González Camarena invent a tri-chromatic device?
A.TVs were not perfect to send sound.
B.TVs didn't help educate children then.
C.TVs were too expensive for people to own.
D.TVs could only show black-and-white images.
5.What was González Camarena's view on television?
A.It should help create TV network. B.Rich people should make it cheaper.
C.It should be widely used and educational. D.There was no need to improve its technology.
6.What do you think of González Camarena according to the passage?
A.A creative and caring inventor. B.A clever and friendly educator.
C.A grateful and curious inventor. D.A smart and successful educator.

Nowadays, we can easily make video calls to friends and family. However, we can't give high-fives, shake hands or receive hugs through the screen. Scientists have invented special cool gloves to solve this problem to let you "feel" in virtual reality (VR, 虚拟现实).
The gloves have small devices (装置) inside that allow them to move. When you interact (互动) with someone in VR, such as shaking hands or passing an object, the gloves will move in different ways. Then you'll have the sense of touch. It's not only fun but also meaningful. Unlike traditional video calls, this technology lets users move freely around each other and interact with virtual objects, like passing a cup or completing group activities.
The idea for this technology came from personal experience. A student on the team hadn't seen his family for five years and missed their hugs. He said, "This isn't just about technology. It's about bringing people closer."
These gloves can be very helpful in different situations. In hospitals, they could allow patients and their family members to share a comforting touch across distances (距离). In faraway workplaces and classrooms, they offer a fun way to work together. And for loved ones separated by travel, they bring a deeper sense of closeness.
The scientists say these gloves can't do exactly what real hugs do, but they can make online interactions feel warmer. Soon, while playing games in VR, you may be able to truly feel your friends high-five! The team is still working on improving the gloves. Future gloves might make you feel even more real, like letting you "touch" different kinds of material! In a word, bringing the sense of touch into virtual spaces is highly valuable in today's world.
7.What is the main problem the special gloves try to solve?
A.Making video calls convenient. B.Allowing people to "feel" in VR.
C.Helping people record video calls. D.Increasing the number of VR users.
8.What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A.How the special gloves work. B.Where the gloves can be used.
C.Why video calls are better than VR. D.When scientists invented the gloves.
9.What is the scientists' attitude towards these gloves according to the last paragraph?
A.They think the gloves are only for games.
B.They doubt the gloves will be very popular.
C.They think the gloves can take the place of real hugs.
D.They believe the gloves can make online time warmer.
D
During the rainy season, Wen's classroom floor was often covered with water from wet umbrellas. The umbrella stand near the door was narrow, so large umbrellas fell out and blocked the way. For invention week, Wen set two goals: keep the floor dry and let students handle umbrellas quickly.
His first model used a tall cardboard box with holes cut in the top. It kept umbrellas upright, but water softened the bottom within a day. For the second model, Wen placed the box inside a plastic tray. The floor stayed dry, yet students had difficulty finding their own umbrellas because the handles were too close together.
Wen then watched how students entered the room. Most wanted to leave quickly, and few would read a number or use a lock. He changed the design into a low round stand with wide spaces around the edge. Each space had a simple colored shape, so users could remember a red star or a blue circle instead of a number. Water ran through small holes into a removable tray.
A three-day test revealed another surprise: the round stand took too much space when all the spaces were filled. Wen cut it into two half-circles and placed them against the wall. He also added rubber feet so the stand would not slide on the wet floor. This version worked well.
At the exhibition, Wen showed all four models instead of only the final one. Visitors could see how each failure led to a change in the next idea. His display reminded visitors that a successful invention is often a record of questions, tests and useful mistakes.
10.Why did Wen add a plastic tray?
A.To show colored shapes. B.To make the stand taller.
C.To hold more umbrellas. D.To collect water.
11.What can we infer from Wen's observation of students?
A.A design must fit users' actual habits.
B.Every invention needs a computer.
C.Colored shapes are harder than numbers.
D.A tall stand is always safer.
12.What does "This version" in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The tall cardboard box. B.The two half-circle stands with rubber feet.
C.The round stand before testing. D.The original narrow stand.
13.Which statement best summarizes Wen's design process?
A.He copied a costly product and made it cheaper.
B.He followed visitors' advice after the exhibition.
C.He improved the stand by testing one problem at a time.
D.He chose appearance over practical use.

Drones (无人机), also called unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), were not always the common tools we see today. Their history is closely connected to military (军事的) use. It is believed that the first drones were developed in the early 20th century for military training. A big step forward happened during World War I when the first drones that could be controlled remotely (远程地) were tested. However, these early drones were very expensive, so it's difficult to produce.
The real change began in the 21st century with improvements in technology. Smaller and cheaper sensors (传感器) and GPS systems were invented. This made it possible to produce consumer drones. In 2006, a company called DJI, which was founded in Shenzhen, China, started to develop easy-to-fly drones for the public. These drones were equipped with cameras and could take amazing photos and videos from the sky. Soon, drones were no longer just for the military. They became popular with photographers, farmers, and even delivery (配送) services.
Today, drones are widely used around the world. Guangdong Province, especially Shenzhen, is considered a global center for drone making and improving. Drones are used for many purposes. It is clear that this invention has now changed many parts of our work and life. As technology continues to develop, who knows what new uses for drones will be invented in the future.
14.According to Paragraph 2, what helped companies make drones for the public?
A.The needs of the military. B.The support from the government.
C.The improvements in some technologies. D.The invention of the first camera.
15.What does the underlined word "equipped" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Recalled. B.Provided. C.Nodded. D.Avoided.
16.Which of the following can be inferred (推断) from the passage?
A.Drones were very common in the early 20th century.
B.DJI was the first company to invent military drones.
C.The development of drones in Shenzhen is mentioned to show its local importance.
D.Drones are only useful for taking photos and making videos nowadays.
17.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Military Use of Early Drones
B.How DJI Became a Famous Company
C.The Development and Popularization of Drones
D.Drones' Popular Uses in Guangdong Province

I am Li Hua, and I’m glad to share our group’s project on designing a flying bike.
Our flying bike has two amazing advantages: it runs fast and is environmentally friendly as it uses solar power. During the design, we faced a big problem—how to ensure its safety. After discussions, we chose carbon fiber as the main material, which is light but strong enough to guarantee safety.
This project taught me that teamwork is the most important thing. It also improved our ability to solve these problems. We really hope our design can come true in the future.

The rubber raincoats soon 10 in the market. Year after year, people tried to improve the raincoats. Today raincoats are widely used in our daily life.

We're not sure when the flying machine will be on sale, but the inventor says it will go to market in the "near future." Let's wait and see!

【答案】7.B 8.A 9.D

【答案】10.D 11.A 12.B 13.C

One day, Paula Ma was walking along Castle Island's beach. She found there were lots of plastic pieces in the sea and some were too small to pick up. She began to think about how to solve the problem.
First, she did a survey. The result showed there were already 150 million tons of plastic in the sea, and that every year there would be another 8 million tons. She realized something must be done. So she decided to invent a robot that could work under water. She tried again and again. At last her ROV (遥控无人潜水器) came out. It could move through water and pick up plastic pieces, especially the small ones.
With this ROV, Paula Ma took part in the Broadcom Masters Competition. It was one of the top STEM competitions. It's for young students around the world. This year, more than 5,000 students were interested in the competition, but only a few got the chance. Paula Ma's ROV caught a lot of attention. It had a camera with three different kinds of lights. It could find plastic pieces easily. Dana Yoerger, an expert, said, "The ROV is nicely done for a 12-year-old girl. She's very clever."
In fact, Paula Ma is always learning to solve the world's problems and her parents are always supporting her. At the age of five, she began to go to workshops to learn engineering skills. When she was asked about the future plan, she said, "I want to be an engineer because I like building things. I think many problems can be solved with new inventions. Right now, I'm just caring about plastic problems because there is still a long way to go."
