Pele
Pele was born in Brazil in 1940. Like many other Brazilian kids, Pele loved football and often played the game in the streets. He also went to school and did odd jobs to help bring in money for the family. However, what he loved best was to play football in the streets or practise kicking the ball with his father(also a great football player).
Pele gained the attention of some coaches, first in the neighbourhood contests and later as he led his team to win the junior league tournament two years in a row. At the age of fourteen, Pele started to play for one of the first professional football teams in Brazil. As Pele became more experienced as a player, the game of football grew. By 1950, football had become the most popular game everywhere in the world, except for North America. What had begun as a British sport became the favourite sport of people all around the world. Football became a truly international sport.
Pele was in the Brazilian team in the World Cup matches of 1958. Before 1958, the Brazilian team had failed in the finals three times in a row. Some blamed the failure on the referee’s unfair decisions, which, however, was not the case. Actually, the Brazilians, though gifted, had no discipline. In the 1958 finals against Sweden, Pele kicked the winning goal, and he returned home a hero.
However, he never forgot his poor fellow men. Pele owned dozens of apartment houses, in which he often allowed poor families to live without paying rent. He bought his mother the home he had promised her when he signed his first professional contract. But the most exciting moment of all was in 1969, when Pele scored his thousandth goal. As football fans stormed onto the field and reporters begged for a speech, all he said was, “Remember the poor children.”
Today, Pele is one of the most famous athletes in the world. He retired in 1975. However, soon after that, he decided to play for three years with the New York team. He could not resist the challenge of trying to make football popular in the United States, one of the few countries in the world where football had not become the national sport. In 1977, Pele retired for good at the age of thirty-seven.
1.What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?
A.Pele was born to a well-off family in which his father was a great football star.
B.The junior league tournament in Brazil is especially intended for talented football lovers.
C.In 1954, Pele started his professional career, which contributed to the development of football.
D.Around 1950, football was more popular than basketball in the world.
2.The reason why the Brazilian team failed to win the 1954 World Cup was that________.
A.the Brazilian players were talented players
B.the Brazilian players failed to cooperate well
C.Pele didn’t score many goals in the game
D.the referee discriminated against Brazilians
3.Which of the following aspects is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.Pele’s family background. B.Pele’s great talent for soccer.
C.Pele’s enthusiasm for football. D.Pele’s charity organization.

Ronda Rousey is an American mixed martial artist, actress, and former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) champion. She became famous as the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) women’s bantamweight (雏量级) champion and helped bring women’s fighting into the mainstream.
Rousey was born on February 1, 1987, in Riverside, California. Her childhood was challenging. She had a speech disorder and did not speak until she was six years old. When she was eight, her father took his own life after a serious injury left him unable to walk. Her mother, a former world judo (柔道) champion, encouraged Ronda to take up judo as a way to deal with her emotions.
Rousey excelled quickly. At 15, she made the U.S. Olympic team. At 16, she became the youngest American to earn the number one national ranking in her division. She won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and retired from judo at 21.
After the Olympics, Rousey struggled financially. She worked at a bar and even lived in her car for a time. She then turned to mixed martial arts. In 2010, she had her first amateur match and won her first fight in just 23 seconds using her famous armbar technique. She turned professional soon after and won her first four fights in less than one minute each.
In 2012 Rousey became the first woman to sign with the UFC. She successfully defended her championship title multiple times, often winning in the first round. Many of her fights ended in under one minute. Her speed and power made her a superstar. She appeared on magazine covers and in movies like The Expendables 3 and Furious 7.
However, her run of victories ended in November 2015 when she lost to Holly Holm. Another loss followed in 2016. Rousey then moved to professional wrestling, joining WWE. She became a champion there as well and is one of only eight female Triple Crown champions in WWE history.
Rousey married UFC fighter Travis Browne, and they have two daughters. She returned to the fighting cage for a special match against Gina Carano. Rousey said this would likely be her last fight, as she wanted to focus on her family.

Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. However, it’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn when walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. In her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
8.Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A.They must run long distances. B.They have to follow special rules.
C.They are qualified for the marathon. D.They are good at swinging their legs.
9.What advantage does race walking have over running?
A.It’s more popular at the Olympics. B.It’s less challenging physically.
C.It’s less likely to cause knee injuries. D.It’s more effective in body building.
10.What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A.Doing regular exercises. B.Having a medical checkup.
C.Hiring an experienced coach. D.Getting experts’ opinions.
11.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Race Walking: Fitness Benefits and Form Challenges
B.Running VS. Race Walking: Which Burns More Calories?
C.Avoiding Injuries: Why Race Walking Might be safer Than Running?
D.The Unusual Feature of Race Walking
【答案】8.B 9.C 10.D 11.A
根据文章第二段中的“But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. However, it’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
根据文章最后一段中的“As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. (因此,她说,跑步时的一些伤害,例如跑者膝关节损伤,在竞走运动员中并不常见。)”可知,与跑步相比,竞走不太容易导致膝盖受伤。
10.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice. (事实上,任何想尝试竞走的人最好先咨询教练或有经验的竞走选手,以学习正确的技巧,她说。这需要一些练习。)”可知,Norberg博士建议任何想尝试竞走的人都应该先咨询教练或有经验的选手,即获取专业人士的意见。
11.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. (研究表明,竞走与跑步在健身方面有许多相似之处,而且很可能有助于减少受伤。)”可知,文章首先指出了竞走与跑步一样具有健身益处,以及第三段中“Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. (她说,跑步和竞走一样,对身体要求很高。)”以及最后一段中“But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. (但这项运动的特殊形式会对踝关节和髋部造成相当大的压力,因此有此类伤病史的人在尝试这项运动时应格外谨慎。)”可知,文章接着分析了其特殊的运动形式带来的挑战,如对脚踝和髋部的压力以及需要专业指导等。因此,A选项“Race Walking: Fitness Benefits and Form Challenges (竞走:健身益处与形式挑战)”最能全面概括文章主旨,符合题意。
(D)
If you want to be healthier this year, here is some encouraging news. Small changes to your sleep, diet, and exercise habits could have the potential to extend your life by approximately one year, according to researcher Nicholas Koemel from the University of Sydney.
To reach this conclusion, Koemel and his team examined data from nearly 60,000 adults aged 40 to 69. The participants reported their eating habits and wore activity trackers for a week to record their sleep and exercise. Then the researchers followed their health for eight years.
The team identified the least healthy 5% of participants, who slept only about 5 hours a day, exercised just 5 minutes daily, and had poor diets. Using a statistical model, the researchers estimated that individuals who added a little more sleep, exercise, and vegetables lived a year longer than the least healthy group. Interestingly, making these small combined changes was as effective as making a much larger change in only one area. For example, sleeping 25 minutes more without changing diet or exercise produced the same effect.
The findings support a second study published this week that analyzed death rate and exercise data from more than 40,000 people, aged 64 on average, across Norway, Sweden and the US. Ulf Ekelund in Norway and his colleagues fed this data into a statistical model and predicted that, if the vast majority of the population in those countries — except for the most active 20 percent of people — engaged in an extra 5 minutes of exercise per day, about 10 percent of deaths could be prevented in the following eight years, on average.
Both studies have limitations, however. People may not accurately remember what they ate, and one week of activity data may not reflect their lifelong habits. Still, the message remains clear: small steps can lead to big benefits.
12.How did the researchers reach the conclusion?
A.By making use of a sleeping model. B.By analyzing adults’ medical records.
C.By examining data and tracking health. D.By comparing habits in different groups.
13.What can be inferred from the example in paragraph 3?
A.Sleeping 25 minutes more reduces one year of life.
B.Five minutes of daily exercise can replace poor diets.
C.Small changes can match a big one for health benefits.
D.A big single change is better than small combined ones.
14.What can be predicted from the second study?
A.Extra 5 minutes of exercise per day avoid death.
B.Extra sleep is more effective than extra exercise.
C.People over 60 benefit more from small changes.
D.The most active 20% of people need more exercise.
15.What does the passage try to tell us?
A.No pain, no gain. B.Every little bit counts.
C.It’s never too late to mend. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.
【答案】12.C 13.C 14.A 15.B
根据第二段“To reach this conclusion, Koemel and his team examined data from nearly 60,000 adults aged 40 to 69. The participants reported their eating habits and wore activity trackers for a week to record their sleep and exercise. First it’s the calm look on her face. Then people notice her hair clip (发夹). Many things about Huang Yuting turn heads.
1 The shooting star is just really good at her sport. At the recent ISSF World Cup Final (国际射联射击世界杯总决赛), she led the women’s 10m air rifle (女子10米气步枪) competition from start to finish. 2 Huang put on great performances at the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2022 Asian Games, too.
Her calmness in front of the target may easily fool us, but Huang is only 18 years old. She grew up in an ordinary family in Taizhou, Zhejiang. 3 She also studied hard in school.
The turning point came one day in 2016. Huang’s school had some visitors. Those were coaches from a local sports school. They were looking for young talents. They asked the kids to each build a pyramid (金字塔) out of bullet shells (弹壳). 4 But Huang still made it. She was chosen to train as a shooter.
Huang tried her best to balance her new “hobby” with her schoolwork. Every day after school, she practiced shooting for an hour. Then, she went home to do her homework. After only one year of training, Huang began winning shooting competitions. 5
As a young shooter and student, Huang has many more competitions and tests ahead. But with her hard work and talent, she’ll surely continue to hit the bullseye (靶心) — both on and off the shooting range.

How to Make the Most of a Gap Year
A gap year — a year taken off between high school and college — can be a life-changing experience. But to make it truly worthwhile, you need to plan carefully. 6 Here are some tips to help you succeed.
Set clear goals. Before you start, think about what you want to achieve. Do you want to learn a new language? Gain work experience? Volunteer abroad? 7 Your goals will guide your decisions and keep you focused.

Stay open to the unexpected. While having a plan is important, the best experiences often come from unplanned opportunities. 9 The most memorable stories are often those you didn’t expect.
Reflect regularly. A gap year is not just about doing — it’s about learning. Take time to journal, talk to mentors, and think about what you’re experiencing. 10 This reflection will help you grow and present a compelling story to colleges or employers.
A.Without clear goals, you may drift aimlessly.

Huang tried her best to balance her new “hobby” with her schoolwork. Every day after school, she practiced shooting for an hour. Then, she went home to do her homework. After only one year of training, Huang began winning shooting competitions. 5

Reflect regularly. A gap year is not just about doing — it’s about learning. Take time to journal, talk to mentors, and think about what you’re experiencing. 10 This reflection will help you grow and present a compelling story to colleges or employers.
A.Without clear goals, you may drift aimlessly.
