The skateboard felt like a wild animal under Leo’s feet.It was his thirteenth birthday present, and the moment he stepped on it,the board shot out from under him, leaving him sitting on the ground. For the next two weeks, the skateboard sat in the corner of his room,a symbol of his failure.
His friend Mia,an experienced skater, finally talked him into trying again.“Everyone falls at first,Leo,” she said.“The key is to get back on.”
One sunny afternoon, they went to the quiet basketball court.Leo’s heart pounded as he put one foot on the board. He held Mia’s arm tightly, his body as stiff as a board.“Relax,” she encouraged.“Look ahead, not at your feet.”
Slowly, shakily,he started to roll.He fell again and again, collecting scratches and bruises like badges of honor(荣誉徽章).But each time,Mia was there with an encouraging word.Gradually, his fear began to mix with a new feeling:determination. He started to find his balance, pushing off gently on the smooth ground.
Then came the day when Mia pointed to a very gentle slope(缓坡).“You’re ready for that,” she said.It looked like a mountain to Leo.He took a deep breath, remembering all the small successes. He pushed off.The board started to roll faster.Fear rose in his chest, but he remembered Mia’s advice:“Look ahead.” He fixed his eyes on the end of the path, bent his knees, and let the board carry him.
The wind moved through his hair. For a few seconds,he wasn’t fighting the board;he was gliding with it.He rolled to a stop, his heart racing with excitement, not fear.He hadn’t just conquered the slope;he had conquered his own fear.He finally understood that courage wasn’t about not being afraid;it was about not letting fear stop you. That unforgettable ride was more than just learning a new skill;it was a lesson he would carry for life.
4.Why did the skateboard sit in the room corner for two weeks?
A.It was like a wild animal.
B.It was broken and needed repair.

A.To take a long rest.
B.To turn to someone for help.
C.To give it another try on the skateboard.
D.To check if the skateboard is broken.
6.What does the underlined word “conquered” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Overcame. B.Enjoyed.
C.Tracked. D.Discovered.
7.What is the main lesson Leo learned from this experience?
A.Skateboarding is a very dangerous sport.
B.Courage means moving forward despite fear.
C.It’s important to have an experienced teacher.

(2026河南TOP 20名校大联考高一上月考)
A major study has investigated the relationship between walking and the risk of developing chronic(慢性的) back problems. The findings could save the healthcare system significant amounts of money while also easing many people’s back pain—if we just follow the simple advice provided.
The results are clear:People who walk a lot have less back pain than people who do not walk much—and the amount is what matters most, not the intensity(强度).It is better to walk a lot than to walk fast.
“People who walk more than 100 minutes every day have a 23% lower risk of back problems than those who walk 78 minutes or less,” said Rayane Haddadj,a PhD candidate at the Department of Public Health.
It probably comes as no surprise that physical activity is good for your back, but until now we have not actually known whether the amount of low-intensity walking we do also helps prevent back problems.“Intensity also plays a role in the risk of long-term back problems, but not as much as the daily amount of walking,” said Haddadj.
The results may be important in relation to preventing chronic back problems.Until now, there has been little research on the prevention of these types of problems. It is well known that physical activity can prevent a wide range of illnesses and diseases. This study is important because it confirms that physical activity, and especially daily walking, can help prevent long-term back problems.
“The findings highlight(强调) the importance of finding time to be physically active—to prevent both chronic back problems and a number of other diseases.Over time, this could lead to major savings for society,” said Paul Jarle Mork,a professor at the Department of Public Health and Nursing.
8.What does the first paragraph stress about the findings?
A.Patients’ answers.
B.Public concern.
C.Practical benefits.
D.Simple advice.
9.What is the most important for reducing back pain according to the study?
A.The place to walk.
B.The pace of walking.
C.The size of walking steps.
D.The amount of walking.
10.Which of the following needs more research?
A.What effect walking can have.
B.How to prevent chronic back pain.
C.Why physical activity is important.
D.What causes chronic back problems.
11.What is Paul’s attitude towards the result of the study?
A.Positive. B.Doubtful.
C.Worried. D.Uncaring.
