I tried incredibly hard to focus on the words that I spent hours putting down on paper. I tried to conquer my fear of speaking in public on numerous occasions throughout my life. During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting. Public speaking had been my nemesis for as long as I could remember. Then in my mid-thirties, I decided to join the public speaking group Toastmasters. At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work. It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out. Science has made this country a place where dreams come true — this is why we all need to protect science. In addition, as a science writer, I try to get readers to understand how science is related to their daily lives. So I ended up on that frightening stage on that sunny Saturday in April — Earth Day. Despite the body shakes and fear, I persevered. That day, I looked out into the crowd of like-minded science supporters and I felt comfort. Reaching that milestone goal of getting through a speech truly changed me. At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures. 24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “nemesis” in Para.1? A. Advantage B. Annoyance C. Preference. D. Strength. 25. How did the author behave about public speaking after leaving Toastmasters? A. He began to feel less worried. B. He became a polished speaker. C. He remained a shy speaker. D. Things became worse for him. 26. What made the author want to speak out on Earth Day? A. It was a good chance to learn science. B. He must rise up to defend his profession. C. It was a project organized by Toastmasters. D. He couldn’t have people attacking science. 27. What lesson did the author draw from his successful speech? A. Passion can motive us to achieve the unachievable. B. No difficulty can be overcome with great effort. C. Science can lead us to make wonderful changes. D. Frustration can be stepping stones to success. B 25. C 26. D 27. 根据第一段中“During college and at my first few jobs, I would get ridiculously nervous when I had to give a presentation or lead a meeting.(在大学期间和我最初的几份工作中,当我必须做报告或主持会议时,我会感到异常紧张。)” 根据第二段中“At every meeting, we were rated and forced to compete with other speakers for an award. You would think that I would walk away from these experiences as a polished speaker, but nothing seemed to work.(在每次会议上,我们都被评分,被迫与其他演讲者竞争奖项。你可能会认为我在经历这些之后会成为一名出色的演说家,但这些经历似乎不起作用。)”可知,作者参加了很多比赛,但是仍然是一个害羞的演讲者。故选C。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“It wasn’t until recently, when science and scientific institutions were being attacked for unfair reasons during the pandemic, that I decided I must speak out.(直到最近,当科学和科学机构在大流行期间因不公平的原因受到攻击时,我才决定必须大声疾呼。)” 根据最后一段中“At almost forty, I learned that passion can set off a flame in my heart to do things I never dreamed possible. The darkness that led to my speech is sure to lead to new opportunities and adventures.(在将近四十岁的时候,我明白了激情可以点燃我心中的火焰,让我去做我做梦都认为不可能的事情。导致我演讲的黑暗一定会带来新的机会和冒险。)”可知,作者意识到激情能够燃烧内心的火焰,让我们去做做梦都认为不可能的事情,也就是说作者认为激情可以激励我们去实现无法实现的目标。故选A。 C Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare(噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched. Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored. While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS has undeniably transformed how we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with self-guided navigation. Over time, those who depended more on GPS showed a sharp decline in spacial memory and problem-solving skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can lead to discomfort. In seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort. That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better outcomes. Research shows that mild stress can enhance adaptability. Neuroscience(神经科学) reveals that neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to form new connections—is enhanced through challenging experiences. This adaptability is crucial for developing resilience, (抗逆力), a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort. But this doesn't mean we should reject comfort entirely; it's to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think of it as “microdosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the resilience we've buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck? Choosing discomfort isn't easy, but sometimes, it's worth it. 28. What does the underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Possible to change. B. Certain to function. C. Unlikely to be settled. D. Unable to be accepted. 29. What may digital conveniences cause according to the text? A. The fast but worthless relief. B. The meaningful engagement. C. The loss of thinking capacity. D. The lack of necessary comfort. 30. Which is a real-life application of “microdosing hardship”? A. Taking the stairs instead of the lift. B. Ordering take-out food after work. C. Exploring a new city by using GPS. D. Writing an email using voice-to-text. 31. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. GPS: the invisible cost of convenience B. Stress: the main cause of brain damage C. Discomfort: a hidden source of resilience D. Smartphones: barriers to human progress 【答案】28. D 29. C 30. A 31. 根据第一段中“Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare(噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched.(想象一下,有一天早上醒来,发现你的智能手机不见了。你再也不能用它导航去上班,点咖啡,或者和朋友联系了。对我们大多数人来说,这是一场噩梦。但这并不_____)”可知,这里的语境是假设智能手机突然消失的情景虽然令人不安,但它不应该是不能被接受的。故选D。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored. While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills.(这一切都是因为我们越来越依赖社交媒体和智能技术,这些技术旨在提供快速的解脱,但往往以牺牲深刻而有意义的参与为代价,这可能会进一步导致我们失去一些容易被忽视的东西。虽然这些便利提供了短期的解脱,但它们可能会削弱我们的思维能力)”可知,数字便利可能导致思考能力的下降。故选C。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Think of it as “microdosing hardship”—a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand.(把它想象成“微量困难”——一系列小的、可以管理的困难,这些困难能让我们的心理和情绪肌肉保持强壮,比如用笔写字,或者用手洗碗)”可知,采取“微量困难”的实际行动是做一些小的、可以管理的困难的事情,A选项“爬楼梯而不是乘电梯”符合“微量困难”的含义。故选A。 通读全文,结合第二段中“Despite being more digitally connected than ever, we are lonelier and more anxious.(尽管我们比以往任何时候都更加数字化地联系在一起,但我们却更加孤独和焦虑)”、第三段中“While these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills.(虽然这些便利提供了短期的解脱,但它们可能会削弱我们的思维能力)”以及第四段中“That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us.(这就是问题所在:我们避免的不适往往正是让我们变得坚强的东西)”可知,文章主要讲述了现代生活中人们过于依赖智能手机和各种智能技术,造成了一些不良后果,如焦虑、抑郁、思维能力下降等。 C。 D Marine communities traveled to Antarctica during the Earth’s warmest phase in 66 million years, long before a major extinction occurred. Recently, a team of researchers compared biodiversity and global community structure, and they discovered that the community frequently responds to climate change millions of years before biodiversity loss occurs. The study implies that plankton (浮游生物) relocated to cooler places to escape the tropical (热带的) heat, leaving only the most highly specialized species to survive. These findings suggest that changes on the community size will be visible long before extinctions, and that greater effort should be put into monitoring the structure of marine communities to potentially forecast future marine extinctions. Dr Adam Woodhouse from the University of Bristol’s School of Earth Sciences, explained: “Considering three billion people live in the tropics, this is not great news. Biodiversity among marine plankton groups has changed in the last 66 million years, but no one had explored it on a global, spatial scale through the lens of a single database.” “We used the Triton dataset that I created during my PhD, offering new insights into how biodiversity responds spatially to global changes in climate, especially during intervals of global warmth relevant to future warming predictions.” Adam added. The fossil record of marine plankton is the most complete and extensive document of ancient biological changes available to science. By applying advanced computational analyses to this document, researchers detailed global community structure of the oceans since the death of the dinosaurs, revealing that community change often precedes the extinction of organisms. The team intends to apply similar strategies to additional marine plankton groupings. This study only looked at planktonic foraminifera (有孔虫类); however, there are numerous additional microfossil groups that play key roles in marine food webs to be investigated. They must also use historical and current patterns to anticipate future community organization with new climate models. 32. What is the major finding of the study? A. Tropical plankton adapted to extreme heat. B. Marine life responds earlier than expected. C. Fossil records predict future climate change. D. Warming causes immediate biodiversity loss. 33. What do we know from paragraph 3? A. Fossil fuel use must be stopped immediately. B. Ocean shipping traffic need stricter regulation. C. Gene editing of plankton makes for their heat tolerance. D. Monitoring marine community structure should be enhanced. 34. What role did the Triton dataset play in the research? A. Predict future climate models. B. Track species’ extinction timelines. C. Compare tropical and polar ecosystems. D. Reveal spatial responses to global warmth. 35. What will the research team investigate next? A. Causes of tropical extinctions. B. Forms of the Ice age community. C. Samples of other groups and models. D. Adaptation strategies of human beings. 32. B 33. D 34. D 35. Clara walked in quietly. Her shoes stepped on wood shavings (刨花) that sparkled in the sunlight. Through the dusty windows, the morning light shone on Grandfather’s rough hands. He was gluing a maple chair leg. The wall calendar still showed January. Its yellowed pages were curling, just like dry leaves. An open order book lay on the desk. February’s page was empty. There had been no new orders since mid-January. Clara held her breath and recorded Grandfather with her phone. She focused on his quick hands as he measured angles with a metal ruler. “This might help him,” she thought, eager to show how skilled he was. However, when she posted the video online, negative comments flooded in. “Old ways for a dying business!” “No wonder the business is failing!” Saddened, Clara deleted the video quickly. A spider crawled over the empty order book. Its blank pages showed not many people wanted handmade things these days. “Want to see my treasure?” Grandpa’ s voice broke the silence. He opened a leather album filled with pencil sketches (草图) like library chairs from 1958 and park benches from 1962. A faded photo slipped out: a smiling boy missing two teeth was grinning at the camera, holding a curved (弯曲的) spoon proudly. “Timmy, my former student,” Grandfather smiled, touching the curve of the spoon in the photo. “Now he designs furniture for tall buildings. Last month’s newspaper had an article about his curved stairs. It was inspired by this very spoon.” He tapped the photo, adding, “Machines make things fast, but hands remember stories.” Clara looked at the photo — the curved spoon, Timmy’s smile, and Grandpa’s young handwriting on the back: Timmy’s first repair, age 7. Beside her, fresh wood shavings were shining. “Stories must be told,” Clara murmured, taking out her phone again. This time, she aimed to share not just the work, but the story behind it. Paragraph 1: The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The next morning, Clara uploaded a new video. This time, her camera swept across the leather album’s sketches of Timmy’s curved spoon and lingered on a yellowed newspaper clipping featuring his iconic stairs. As Grandfather narrated their story, she zoomed in on his hands — wrinkled yet steady — shaping a piece of wood into art. The video ended with his voice, “Hands remember stories machines forget.” By noon, comments exploded, “Hands of a legend!” “Need this magic in my home!” Shares of the video skyrocketed. Amid the flood of praise, Clara spotted a message, “I’m coming to see you soon, Master-back to where the magic began!” Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture which just matched the same grin from that faded photo. A week later, Timmy, now a famous furniture designer, walked in the workshop. He embraced Grandfather, tears glistening. “Your spoon taught me curves have souls,” he said, placing the curved spoon on the desk. Together, they designed a signature chair — Timmy sketching modern lines on his tablet while Grandfather penciling his classic curves. Clara captured the moment: their four hands shaping a maple chair leg together, mirroring the one Grandfather had glued a week before. When Timmy posted the video, orders poured in: new chairs with curved legs, and even wooden benches for the town park. Wood shavings danced in the sunlight as the workshop came back to life, the order book’s empty February page now filled with March’s growing demands. 3.词汇激活 行为类 ①发现:spot/find ②放置:place/put ③拥抱:embrace/hug ④开始:begin/start 情绪类 赞扬:praise/compliment 【点睛】[高分句型1] Her eyes widened at Timmy’s profile picture which just matched the same grin from that faded photo. C Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. Smartphones: barriers to human progress D Marine communities traveled to Antarctica during the Earth’s warmest phase in 66 million years, long before a major extinction occurred. As a leadership consultant for many years, I’ve found many of the leaders I work with report feeling frustrated (沮丧的) as they face the continuous change and uncertainty in the growing challenges of their roles. ____36____ Throughout their careers, leaders are conditioned to come up with the final, correct answer. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
