Passage 4
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
It was morning, and the new sun was shining gold across the gentle sea. A crowd of a thousand seagulls (海鸥) were fighting for bits of food. But far away from these birds, Jonathan Seagull was practicing flying alone.
Most seagulls don’t trouble themselves to learn more than the simplest facts of flight—how to get food and come back. For most seagulls, it is not flying that matters, but eating. For this seagull, however, flight is much more important than eating. More than anything else, Jonathan Seagull loved to fly.
This kind of thinking, he found, is not the way to make oneself popular with other birds. Even his parents were unhappy.
“See here, Jonathan,” said his father not unkindly. “Winter isn’t far away. If you don’t study how to get food, you might die of hunger in the future. Flying is all very well, but you can’t eat flight, you know.”
Jonathan understood what his father meant. For the next few days he tried to act like the other seagulls; he really tried, screaming and fighting with other seagulls for fish and bread. But he couldn’t make it work.
“It’s all so worthless,” he thought, “I could be spending all this time learning to fly. There’s so much to learn”
It wasn’t long before Jonathan Seagull was off by himself again, far out at sea, hungry, happy, learning. The subject was speed, and in a week’s practice he learned more about speed than the fastest seagull alive.
20.What did Jonathan Seagull like doing most?
__________________________________________________________________________
21.What did Father mean by saying “you can’t eat flight”?
__________________________________________________________________________
22.What did Jonathan think of fighting with others for food?
__________________________________________________________________________
23. Do you think Jonathan will die of hunger finally? Why or why not?
______________________________________________________
【答案】20.He liked flying/to fly most. 21.He wished Jonathan to study how to get food/ to know the importance of food. 22.It was worthless/meaningless/not meaningful. 23. No, he won’t. He can fly fastest so he can get food faster than other seagulls./Yes, he will. Although he can fly fastest, he still doesn’t know how to get food.
【导语】本文主要介绍海鸥Jonathan喜欢独自练习飞行,即使没有食物果腹,最后他学会了比其他海鸥更快的速度。
20.根据“More than anything else, Jonathan Seagull loved to fly.”可知,Jonathan最热爱飞翔,故填He liked flying/to fly most.
21.根据“If you don’t study how to get food, you might die of hunger in the future. Flying is all very well, but you can’t eat flight, you know.”可知,父亲说“you can’t eat flight”意在提醒Jonathan要先解决生存需要,即先学会如何获取食物/了解食物的重要性。故填He wished Jonathan to study how to get food/ to know the importance of food.
22.根据“It’s all so worthless”可知,他认为争抢食物毫无意义。故填It was worthless/meaningless/not meaningful.
23. 本题属于开放性试题,言之有理即可。参考答案:No, he won’t. He can fly fastest so he can get food faster than other seagulls./Yes, he will. Although he can fly fastest, he still doesn’t know how to get food.

Passage 1
For more than 30 years, the 50-year-old Zhu Yanjun had been a migrant worker (农民工) in different cities like many other people from the country; but what made him ________ was his strong passion (热情) for reading poetry and books.
In early February, 2023, Zhu became well-known when he became the runner-up in the annual Chinese Poetry Competition hosted by CCTV.
Zhu’s passion for reading came from his Chinese language teacher in middle school who has published many articles in magazines.
“I also wanted to publish stories, so I started to read, and borrowed books from friends and classmates,” he said. Born in a village in Jingning county, Gansu province, Zhu had never left his hometown in his youth. After graduating from middle school, he became a migrant worker.
Zhu worked in more than 10 cities; yet no matter where he was, he went to local bookstores and took a notebook with him in order to write down paragraphs from the books and recite them. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and can recite more than 1,000 of them.
“There is an old Chinese saying: Reading 10,000 books is not as good as traveling 10,000 miles,” said Zhu. “However, for me, although I have been to many different cities, it is not for travel but to make a living. So I improve myself by reading books and poems.”
Reading poetry helps Zhu stay calm and he never complains about hard work. “Whenever I face any difficulty, I think of Chairman Mao’s quotation: ‘Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it’,” he told China Daily.

Passage 2
As Buck traveled deeper into the frozen North, the wild nature inside him grew stronger. He was no longer the gentle pet that had lived comfortably in Judge Miller’s home. Instead, he became stronger, tougher, and more like the wolves of the wilderness. At night, he often listened to the strange call of the wild and felt something ancient awakening (觉醒) in his heart.
Among all the dogs in the sled team (雪橇队), Buck hated Spitz the most. Spitz was the lead dog, cruel, clever, and experienced in every kind of fight. From the beginning, he saw Buck as a dangerous rival (对手).
One night, a pack of hungry wild dogs rushed into the camp. The dogs fought fiercely (激烈地) in the darkness. During the attack, Curly, a friendly dog, was knocked down by a larger wild dog. In a moment, several of them jumped on her. Buck watched in horror.
“So that was the way. No fair play. Once down, that was the end of you.”
He learned a lesson that he would never forget. What hurt him even more was seeing Spitz standing nearby, laughing at Curly’s death. From that day on, Buck felt more hateful (仇恨的) toward Spitz than ever.
As time passed, Buck openly challenged Spitz. He protected weaker dogs of the team, encouraged others to disobey Spitz, and refused to accept him as a leader. Soon the whole team became restless (不安的). Some dogs followed Spitz, but many began to admire (崇拜) Buck’s courage and power.
The final fight came one night when the team chased a snowshoe rabbit across the frozen land. After running for quite a while, Spitz caught the rabbit first. At that very moment, Buck attacked him.
The fight was long and terrible. Spitz was an expert fighter and wounded Buck several times. Buck was tired and bleeding, but he remembered all the lessons he had learned in the wild North. The dogs around them watched silently, knowing that only one leader could survive. Then Buck changed his strategy (策略). Instead of attacking wildly, he waited for the right moment. Suddenly, he broke one of Spitz’s front legs. Then he broke the other.
Spitz fell heavily onto the snow.
The waiting dogs rushed forward at once.
Buck won.
The next morning, Buck took his place at the head of the team. He had won leadership through courage, power, and wisdom. More importantly, he had answered the call of the wild within himself and taken a further step away from his old life.

The main character, the little prince, meets a fox who teaches him that what is truly important is often invisible to the eyes—only the heart can see it clearly.
