Processed foods like chips, sodas and frozen pizzas are full of salt, sugar, and fat. Now, scientists are trying to understand if there is something else about such foods that may be bad for humans.
Scientists have already linked low-cost, packaged foods to rising obesity rates around the world. Obesity increases the risk of many health problems. Three recent studies offer more clues on how our increasingly industrialized food supply may be affecting our health.
The researchers created a system that places foods into four groups. The system says highly processed foods are made mostly of industrialized materials and additives(添加剂). Sodas, packaged cookies, instant noodles and chicken nuggets(鸡肉块) are some examples of highly processed foods. But also included are products that can seem healthy, such as morning cereals, energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.
Researchers conducted a four-week study involving 20 people. They found that people ate about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed foods. That is compared to when the same people were given less processed foods. The researchers permitted the 20 participants to eat as much or as little as they wanted. They were taken to a medical center so their health and behavior could be observed. In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed foods were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain linked eating more processed foods to a higher risk of death in general.
When fed less processed foods, people in the study produced more of a hormone that controls hunger, and less of a hormone that causes hunger. The reason for the reaction is not clear. The scientists also found that people ate processed foods more quickly. Kevin Hall is one of the researchers who led the study. He said that processed foods were usually softer and easier to chew and swallow”. Hall noted the source of nutrients might make a difference. For example, fiber from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than fiber added to packaged foods such as energy bars and yogurt.
Avoiding processed foods can be hard, especially for people with limited time and money. Processed foods can also take many forms. In addition, companies continually re-engineer products to make them seem healthier. The newest studies may provide more reasons to avoid processed foods. But, they also call attention to the difficulty of coming up with ways to do that.
4. What kind of food do energy bars belong to?
A. Fairly health-friendly foods. B. Especially beneficial foods.

Diets come and diets go. One of the most popular today is “intermittent fasting”, which limits one’ s food intake to certain time windows. One popular variant, the “5-2 diet”, requires eating either very small amounts, or nothing at all, on two days a week, but allows normal eating on the other five.
As a weight-loss strategy, intermittent fasting is simple — no calorie counting or major dietary changes. Limiting the restrictions to a couple of days a week, or several hours a day also requires less willpower, which might make it easier to stick with.
Nichola Ludlam-Raine, a dietitian and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, notes that intermittent fasting seems to work roughly as well for weight loss as traditional calorie-counting does. Beyond weight management, animal studies suggest fasting may extend lifespan by up to 40%, slow aging, and reduce cancer risk.
Exactly how it does all that is not entirely clear. One important factor seems to be autophagy (细胞自噬), the process by which cells break down and recycle parts of themselves. The hope is that intermittent fasting might have a similar response in humans, since we share these biological responses with other animals. But running definitive human trials of the sort done on lab animals is impossible. “When we say‘calorie restriction’ we mean nearly starving[the animals],” says Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher at the University of Surrey.
Current research on intermittent fasting relies on limited, short-term studies using moderate biomarkers like insulin (胰岛素)/ cholesterol (胆固醇) levels. Their results are mixed. A review paper published in April 2024 looked at 23 other studies and concluded that intermittent fasting was slightly better than ordinary dieting for overweight people when it came to improving levels of cholesterol and insulin. A similar article, published in January, found no meaningful difference for either weight loss or cardiovascular (心血管的) health.
There are also risks. A study in mice published in Nature in October 2024 found that severe fasting (where calories were cut by 40%) had downsides, including muscle mass loss and, possibly, weakened immune systems. Moderation, too, should be taken in moderation.
8. Which of the following is practicing intermittent fasting?
A. An athlete strictly controlling fat intake as the coach requires.
B. A TV host weighing all food to count calories before eating.
C. An office worker trying to lose weight by eating only 2 meals every day.
D. A clerk on regular meals but skipping meals on Mondays and Thursdays.
9. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A. Fasting affects humans and animals in the same way.
B. Calorie restriction for animals is milder than for humans.
C. Human trials like animal ones for intermittent fasting are no-gos.
D. Autophagy plays a definite role in explaining the benefits of fasting.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards intermittent fasting?
A. Enthusiastic. B. Subjective. C. Favorable. D. Impartial.
11. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The Secrets of Fasting: A Scientific Warning
B. Intermittent Fasting: A Popular but Mysterious Diet
C. Calorie Counting vs. Fasting: Which Works Better?
D. From Animal to Human: The Science Behind Fasting
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. D 11. B

With Earth Day coming up, a new book Birding to Change the World offers reflections on the ways watching birds can renew our joy in nature and even transform our lives. In the book, environmental justice educator Trish O’Kane describes the lessons from birds that have advanced her teaching in Wisconsin.
Author Trish O’Kane is fascinated by American woodcocks (丘鹬), which resemble “a football with wings” and walk awkwardly on land, relying heavily on earthworms (蚯蚓) for food. Their main call is a strange buzzing. Woodcocks are among the 134 bird species inhabiting Warner Park in Madison, Wisconsin. However, every year since the 1990s, on 4 July, the park has hosted a fireworks display called Rhythm and Booms.
At this event, attended by 100,000 people, cannons (大炮) were fired and five tons of fireworks exploded. Birds are known to feel panic and even pain from such loud noise; some abandon nests or even die of fright. The park was covered in metal left over from the fireworks.
O’Kane was angry when she heard about the plans to further develop the park beyond its existing sports fields. O’Kane carried out research, cooperated with local nature lovers to form an activist group called Wild Warner, and educated middle school and college students about the park. Tirelessly working together, a team of park lovers brought evidence forward to local authorities about the ongoing harms to the park, highlighting the delightful woodcocks eating the park’s earthworms that had poison in them. The authorities listened.Rhythm and Booms was moved out of the park and the damaged areas of the park were restored to their original state.
O’Kane’s story is richer than what can be expressed in the words here. It begins in New Orleans at the time of Hurricane Katrina and ends in Vermont, where she teaches today. O’Kane invites us to see the beauty of birds in our world and act for their well-being. We need their voices in this spring’s chorus.
12. What can we know about the book Birding to Change the World?
A. It changed people’s life.
B. It involves the insights into birds.
C. It describes the beauty of fireworks.
D. It made O’Kane become an educator.
13. What impact did the fireworks display have on the birds?
A. Severe. B. Positive. C. Global. D. Short-term.
14. Why did O’Kane oppose the park’s further development?
A. It threatened bird habitats. B. It transformed nature lovers.
C. It increased fireworks costs. D. It destroyed sports facilities.
15. What does O’Kane aim to achieve through her book?
A. Expanding park sports fields. B. Inspiring nature conservation.
C. Promoting fireworks festivals. D. Documenting hurricane history.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. B

三、阅读七选五:本大题共5小题,共12.5分。
Tuvalu is an island country. It is famous for its sandy beaches and turquoise (青绿色的) waters and has long been a popular tourist destination for nearby New Zealanders. However, Tuvalu is at risk of no longer existing because of the rising sea level.
Tuvalu is experiencing the harmful effects of global warming. As global temperatures rise, so does the ocean temperature. Due to the scientific law of “thermal (热的) expansion”, when water heats up it gets bigger. ____16____ Most experts claim that the effects of climate change will make Tuvalu uninhabitable in the next 50 to 100 years. Problems are already emerging. As sea level rises, ocean water containing high levels of salt is travelling further and further inland, destroying the little amount of soil that Tuvaluans have to grow crops.
Even before Tuvaluans began to suffer from the effects of climate change, life on Tuvalu was tough. ____17____ Most of the land on an atoll (环礁) is rock-hard and any soil that exists on it is usually thin and poor for growing crops. The nation has always had to import food apart from fish.
More serious than Tuvalu’s lack of homegrown food has been its lack of drinking water. ____18____ Therefore, Tuvaluans rely almost entirely on rainwater for their need for water. Unfortunately, due to a geographical phenomenon known as La Niña (拉尼娜现象), Tuvalu often suffers from long periods of drought. In 2011, after months of no rain, the government had to declare a state of emergency. ____19____
Tuvalu’s problems have led some of its inhabitants to consider migrating to Australia or New Zealand. ____20____ They know they’ll have to someday, but they want to remain for as long as possible and make the world aware of what is happening to their homeland due to climate change.
A. This is largely due to the geological make-up of atolls.
B. And as a member of the United Nations, they are just doing that.
C. However, they are not willing to abandon the land of their forefathers so easily.
D. Therefore, sea level is rising and for low-lying Tuvalu, this spells disaster.
E. Tuvalu’s representatives demanded that nations should take a more responsible role in reducing gas emissions.
F. It was a desperate situation, and but for emergency shipments from New Zealand and Australia, many Tuvaluans would have died.
G. Unlike normal islands, atolls have no rivers or streams, which means that most of Tuvalu has no groundwater to use for drinking.
【答案】16. D 17. A 18. G 19. F 20. C

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mrs. Garcia couldn’t understand why her son, Mike, came home from school every day with an empty stomach. She had always been careful in preparing Mike’s lunchbox. The food was more than enough to satisfy a young boy’s hunger. But recently Mike often returned home looking hungry. It wasn’t until one evening, when Mrs. Garcia noticed Mike rummaging (翻找) through the kitchen for food, that she realized something was wrong.
“Mike, didn’t you have your lunch today?” Mrs. Garcia asked, watching her son open the fridge and grab a burger.
Mike looked up at her, his eyes wide with fear. “I……I guess I did,” he said in a quiet voice, taking a bite of the burger.
Mrs. Garcia felt confused. “Really? You’ve been saying that for days now. What’s really going on?”
Mike’s shoulders drooped (垂下) as he looked away. “I don’t know, Mum. I just feel hungry.”
Mrs. Garcia’s concern deepened. She knew Mike was a healthy and active boy who usually had a good appetite, and this sudden shift in behavior was alarming. After discussing it with her husband, she decided it was time to uncover what was happening at school.
“Mrs. Garcia, I’ve noticed that Mike seems anxious during lunch,” Clive, Mike’s teacher, said. “I’ll pay closer attention to him and observe how he interacts with his classmates. There might be something we’re overlooking.”
Mrs. Garcia nodded, feeling a ray of hope. “Thank you, Clive. I just want to make sure he’s okay.” She understood it would take time, but she was determined to discover why Mike was struggling and to help him overcome whatever was troubling him.
“We’ll get to the bottom of this. Together, we can help Mike feel more comfortable at school,” Clive smiled.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】As lunchtime approached, Clive stood at the classroom door. He saw Mike walk confidently over to a quiet boy who always sat alone in the corner. Mike greeted him with a smile and handed him part of his lunch, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. The boy accepted it gratefully, and they began chatting warmly, their laughter filling the room. Clive realized that Mike had been sharing his lunch regularly to help someone in need, which explained why he was always hungry when he came home.
Mrs. Garcia saw Clive, Mike, and another boy chatting happily at the school gate. She walked up and found Mike’s smile brighter than usual. Clive explained Mike’s kind gesture—sharing his lunch with the classmate, Jacob, whose family was going through a tough time. Mrs. Garcia felt a mix of pride and relief, hugging Mike tightly. She promised to prepare lunches for both boys every day. Clive added that they had organized a small lunch club to support students in need, and Mike was happy to be part of it. Mrs. Garcia’s heart swelled with admiration for her son’s empathy and responsibility.

C. Relatively high-cost foods. D. Highly processed foods.
5. What can we know about eating more processed foods in Paragraph 4?
A. It does harm to people potentially. B. It can often result in death.
C. It makes people get less calories. D. It makes little difference to people’s health.
6. What is more likely to make people feel full?
A. Fiber added to packaged foods.
B. Fiber from fruit and vegetables
C. Highly processed foods like instant noodles.
D. Foods made mostly of industrial materials and additives.
7. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Different Kinds of Processed Foods
B. Recent Studies on Processed Foods
C. How Bad Processed Foods Are!
D. Advantages and Disadvantages of Processed Foods
C

13. What impact did the fireworks display have on the birds?
A. Severe. B. Positive. C. Global. D. Short-term.

C. It increased fireworks costs. D. It destroyed sports facilities.
15. What does O’Kane aim to achieve through her book?
A. Expanding park sports fields. B. Inspiring nature conservation.
