Learning any language is hard, but learning English can be especially challenging. Why? Because native speakers use the language in ways that textbooks could never describe. In particular, words that British people use cause many language students to scratch their heads.
Here’s an example: You overhear a Briton calling someone a “wazzock”. But what exactly is a wazzock? This word, in fact, means a foolish person, although there’s nothing about it that would help you guess that. There are many strange terms like this in British English — the Oxford English Dictionary would be much smaller without these odd usages filling its pages.
How can these odd words be explained? Part of the answer is the British sense of humor. Britons don’t like to take things too seriously, and this is evident through many British words and phrases. For example, to “spend a penny” means to use the bathroom. It refers to the days when people had to pay a penny to use a public toilet.
In an interview, British linguist David Crystal suggested there may be historical reasons for the large number of odd words and phrases in British English. He thought that they began in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This was a great age for the theater, when Shakespeare and other writers worked hard to keep up with the demand for new plays. The theater’s popularity also provided an incentive (刺激) to create new words.
With this in mind, perhaps Shakespeare and his peers (同行) are responsible for unusual British words such as “codswallop” and “balderdash” — which both, ironically (讽刺地), mean “nonsense”.
While these strange words may be confusing to non-native speakers, they certainly make studying English a lot more interesting.
4. What may make it hard for non-native speakers to learn English?
A. The large English vocabulary. B. Complex grammar rules.
C. A great many strange words. D. Out-of-date English textbooks.
5. Why does the author mention the example of “spend a penny”?
A. To show what typical British sense of humor is.
B. To explain how some strange phrases were created.
C. To explain the meaning and background of the phrase.
D. To show British people’s attitude toward strange words.
6. Which statement may David Crystal agree with?
A. Shakespeare created many nonsense words.
B. Shakespeare’s works are hard due to the odd words.
C. The theater’s 17th-century success led to many odd words.
D. The odd words in new plays helped the theater’s popularity.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. The development of British English.
B. The origin and meanings of British humor.
C. Shakespeare’s influence on British English.
D. Some reasons for odd words in British English.
【答案】4. C 5. B 6. C 7. D
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了英式英语中存在大量奇特词汇和短语这一现象,结合幽默文化与历史背景分析了这类特殊表达产生的原因。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Learning any language is hard, but learning English can be especially challenging. Why? Because native speakers use the language in ways that textbooks could never describe. In particular, words that British people use cause many language students to scratch their heads.(学习任何语言都很难,但学习英语尤其具有挑战性。为什么呢?因为母语者使用这门语言的方式是教科书永远无法描述的。尤其是英国人使用的词汇让很多语言学习者摸不着头脑)”以及第二段“There are many strange terms like this in British English — the Oxford English Dictionary would be much smaller without these odd usages filling its pages.(英式英语中有很多这类奇怪的词汇——要是没有这些奇特用法填满书页,《牛津英语词典》会小得多)”可知,对于非母语学习者来说,大量的英式奇特词汇让英语学习变得更难。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“How can these odd words be explained? Part of the answer is the British sense of humor. Britons don’t like to take things too seriously, and this is evident through many British words and phrases. For example, to “spend a penny” means to use the bathroom. It refers to the days when people had to pay a penny to use a public toilet.(这些奇特的词汇该如何解释呢?部分答案在于英国人的幽默感。英国人不喜欢把事情看得太重,这一点在很多英式词汇和短语中都很明显。举个例子,“spend a penny”(花一便士)这个短语的意思是使用洗手间,这个说法指的是人们使用公共厕得支付一便士的那些日子)”可知,作者以“spend a penny”为例,是为了解释说明一部分奇怪短语的形成过程。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In an interview, British linguist David Crystal suggested there may be historical reasons for the large number of odd words and phrases in British English. He thought that they began in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This was a great age for the theater, when Shakespeare and other writers worked hard to keep up with the demand for new plays. The theater’s popularity also provided an incentive (刺激) to create new words.(在一次采访中,英国语言学家大卫·克里斯托表示,英式英语存在大量奇特词汇和短语可能有历史原因。

Parrots are known for being cheerful and colorful birds with a chatty side. To spotlight these beautiful birds, Nayan Shrimal and Venus Bird from The Paper Ark have launched The Parrot Project, in which they create lifelike paper portraits (肖像) in their likeness for a good cause.
“This series is a respect to these amazing birds and their contribution to our ecosystem,” the artists said. To them, parrots are not only beautiful birds that have inspired them creatively but also a species that has long been subjected to exploitation. “Many parrot species are threatened and some are near to extinction,” Shrimal and Bird explained. “They are suffering a lot due to deforestation and pet trade and we wanted to shine light on the importance of these species in our ecosystem through our art.”
To create these realistic pieces, they begin by picking a species from their collection of bird books. Once they settle on a parrot, they carry out some online research to get all the information needed for a faithful description. “Each species is created keeping in mind their habitat so each artwork in this series shows the bird perching (栖息) on the tree or plant which is either their favorite plant or their perching tree,” the artists share.
Each bird is made up of tiny paper bits, put together following a drawing previously made by the team. They also carefully paint each piece to truly capture the details that make the species so unique, such as the yellow spots on the head of the red-tailed black cockatoo or the ombre (渐变色) feathers of the Scarlet Macaw.
The detailed portraits are now available for sale on The Paper Ark’s website, with the artists donating 10% from each sale towards parrot conservation. “Our primary purpose with this series is to motivate people to learn about these beautiful birds and their importance in our ecosystem and the threats they are facing,” Shrimal and Bird explain. “We want our audience to come together and take steps to conserve this species.”
8. What motivated Nayan Shrimal and Venus Bird to initiate The Parrot Project?
A. The overpopulation of certain parrot species.
B. The threats of human activities to the parrots.
C. Their personal fascination with parrots as pets.
D. The requirement of an environmental organization.
9. How do the artists ensure their paper parrots true to life?
A. By using high-tech to create the models. B. By using real feathers in their artworks.
C. By using photographs as a direct reference. D. By researching all details about the species.
10. Why are there specific trees or plants in the parrot portraits?
A. To add artistic value to the portraits. B. To identify the parrot species easily.
C. To show the bird in its natural habitat. D. To make the artworks more complicated.
11. What can The Parrot Project help do according to the text?
A. To ban the pet trade of parrots. B. To connect people with animals.
C. To research different species of parrots. D. To raise awareness of parrots’ conservation.
【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. D

In the desert in Peru, over 300 new ancient drawings were discovered by using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drones (无人机). The Nazca people, who lived in the area over 2,000 years ago, made the drawings by removing the reddish top layer (层) of rocks in the desert. The drawings are called “geoglyphs (地画)”. The Nazca Lines, which are a famous group of huge ancient drawings, include many different kinds of geoglyphs, from simple shapes to pictures of animals and plants, usually drawn with a single long, winding line.
The first geoglyph was discovered in 1927. Since then, scientists have found around 430 geoglyphs in the area. Now, using AI and drones, scientists have found 303 new geoglyphs. The discovery of one geoglyph used to take three or four years, but now may be done in two or three months. However, the AI program also made lots of mistakes — for every 36 possible geoglyphs the program found, the scientists discovered only one actual geoglyph. Even so, the new method of turning up geoglyphs was much faster than the scientists could have managed without drones and AI.
To find the new geoglyphs, the scientists trained a special AI program to analyze satellite images for potential geoglyphs. They spent over 2,600 hours looking at places the AI had advised. They took lots of pictures with drones and worked on the ground in Peru to check out the locations. Most of the new-found geoglyphs are smaller than the ones already discovered, and are about nine meters in length. Many of them seem to show humans as well as animals.
The scientists are still trying to figure out what the geoglyphs mean. For one thing, the scientists discovered paths in the Nazca Desert. The scientists believe these paths were made by the Nazca people walking through the desert, and that the smaller geoglyphs were meant to be seen by these travellers. The scientists also believe the larger geoglyphs are different and may have been used for celebrations or other special events.
12. How were the Nazca geoglyphs created?
A. By adding red rocks. B. By carving in the soil.
C. By copying winding lines. D. By clearing rock surface layers.
13. Why does the author list the figures in paragraph 2?
A. To stress the efficiency of the new method. B. To show the drones’ imperfection.
C. To argue for more funding. D. To prove AI’s accuracy.
14. What can be inferred about the process of discovering new geoglyphs?
A. Drones were used for initial checks. B. Fieldwork confirmed AI suggestions.
C. AI identified all geoglyphs precisely. D. Satellites ignored some new geoglyphs.
15. What do the scientists think the larger geoglyphs were likely to be used for?
A. Wildlife adoration. B. Desert decoration. C. Special occasions. D. Road signs.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了在秘鲁的沙漠中,科学家在人工智能和无人机的帮助下寻找包含了不同种类的地画的纳斯卡线。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“The Nazca people, who lived in the area over 2,000 years ago, made the drawings by removing the reddish top layer (层) of rocks in the desert. The drawings are called “geoglyphs (地画)”. (2000多年前居住在该地区的纳斯卡人通过移除沙漠中红色的岩石表层来绘制这些画作。这些图画被称为“地画”。)”可知,地画的创作方式是清除岩石表层。故选D。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“The first geoglyph was discovered in 1927. Since then, scientists have found around 430 geoglyphs in the area. Now, using AI and drones, scientists have found 303 new geoglyphs. The discovery of one geoglyph used to take three or four years, but now may be done in two or three months. (即便如此,这种显示地画的新方法比科学家在没有无人机和人工智能的情况下所能做到的要快得多。)”可知,第二段通过对比“过去发现一个地画需3-4年,现在仅需2-3月”,作者在本段列举这些数字主要是为了强调新方法的效率。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“To find the new geoglyphs, the scientists trained a special AI program to analyze satellite images for potential geoglyphs. They spent over 2,600 hours looking at places the AI had advised. They took lots of pictures with drones and worked on the ground in Peru to check out the locations. How Loneliness Is Killing Us
Loneliness is absolutely an epidemic (流行病) in our society, but it’s been growing for decades. Loneliness is the sense that “I am less connected to other people than I want to be.”_____16_____And that makes it different from isolation (独处). I can deliberately isolate myself and feel great about that, but only you can tell if you’re lonely.
_____17_____ In some studies, as many as, 60% of people will say that they feel lonely much of the time. Young adults aged 16 to 24 are the loneliest age group.
There are many factors that are responsible for that. Loneliness was on the rise from the 1950s in part because of the rise of private cars. We’ve become a much more mobile society where the networks of family and friends get loose as people move for jobs and other kinds of opportunities like education.
_____18_____ But then it tears us away from the communities we are born into and spend much of our lives creating. When television came into the American home, there was more of a decline in investing in our communities. And that was made worse as the digital revolution gave us more and more screens to look at.
Research finds loneliness is dangerous to our health. ____19____In addition, people who are lonely in late life have more rapid brain decline.
The choice we can make to keep us on a good path of wellbeing is to invest in our relationships with other people. ____20____.You belong. You matter. You’re connected.
A. It’s a very subjective experience.
B. All of that is good on the one hand.
C. You may feel lost and may have low confidence.
D. Stress coming from loneliness causes physical breakdown.
E. Since the 1950s, people have been less and less invested in other people.
F. People go to faraway colleges and only get in touch with families on screen.
G. A good way is to find an activity around other people where you are comfortable.
【答案】16. A 17. E 18. B 19. D 20. G
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了现在人们感到孤独的原因以及孤独对我们的影响。
【16题详解】
由上文“Loneliness is the sense that “I am less connected to other people than I want to be”.孤独是一种“我和别人的联系比我想要的少”的感觉)”可知,这里在具体描述孤独是一种怎样的状态,而A项It’s a very subjective experience.(这是一种非常主观的体验)符合语境,其中It指代上文的 Loneliness, subjective与上文I want to be对应,所以本句有承上作用。故选A项。

【19题详解】
由上文“Research finds loneliness is dangerous to our health. (研究发现孤独对我们的健康是危险的)”可知,孤独对我们的健康是危险的,而D项Stress coming from loneliness causes physical breakdown.(孤独带来的压力会导致身体崩溃)符合语境,其中physical breakdown与上文dangerous to our health对应,所以本句有承上作用。故选D项。
【20题详解】
由上文“The choice we can make to keep us on a good path of wellbeing is to invest in our relationships with other people.(我们可以做出的选择是投资于我们与他人的关系,以保持我们的健康)”可知,这里讲我们可以投资于我们与他人的关系来保持我们的健康,而G项A good way is to find an activity around other people where you are comfortable.(一个好方法是在别人周围找一个你觉得舒服的活动)符合语境,本句为改善我们与他人的关系的具体建议,所以有承上作用。

Amy is good at making pies, which got her a job at the Good Times restaurant months ago. And she was often regarded as the best worker there. Recently, she became the supervisor (主管) of the restaurant. She was kind and friendly to all the workers and the customers.
One morning, Amy was taking orders when she heard a conversation. “What you did there was great, Mason! It was hard to carry the old lady safely out of the fire. For a moment, I thought you couldn’t make it, my friend,” one man said. Then the other man replied, “Yeah, it was difficult, but that’s our job. And you were the hero today, Gordon. You carried that girl on your shoulder and her dog in your hand. It’s going to be on the newspapers tomorrow, I’m telling you.”
From their clothing and conversation, Amy knew they were firefighters. And she quickly realized that they were talking about the previous night’s fire at the old hotel on the other end of the road. Then the man named Gordon continued, “I don’t care about being in the papers. The little girl and her dog reminded me of my own daughter. She’s constantly asking for a dog, too.”
Amy was moved by the courage and sincerity of the two men. She wanted to show her appreciation for their selfless service. “How about helping pay for their meal?” she thought.
However, she wasn’t a rich girl at all. Weeks ago, her father had an accident and broke his legs. The operation cost a lot of money. And now he needed a wheelchair (轮椅) to move around so that he could live an easier life. But her family was poor and a good wheelchair wasn’t cheap. Amy was trying hard to save money for a wheelchair for her father. And she still needed a lot of money. “Well, the firefighters’ meal won’t cost too much,” Amy finally thought.
Paragraph 1:
Then she went to the cashier (收银员) and secretly paid for their meal.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
The next day, the firefighters began raising (募捐) money for a wheelchair for Amy’s father.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Then she went to the cashier (收银员) and secretly paid for their meal. Amy didn’t want the firefighters to know about her gesture; she just hoped that this small act of kindness would express her gratitude for their bravery and service. As the firefighters finished their meal and went to pay, the cashier informed them that someone had already taken care of it. Surprised and grateful, the firefighters looked around the restaurant to see if they could spot their mysterious benefactor, but Amy had secretly returned to her duties in the kitchen. The firefighters found the manager and insisted being told the truth.
The next day, the firefighters began raising (募捐) money for a wheelchair for Amy’s father, because they already knew who was the benefactor and what her situation was. They wanted to help too. They organized fundraisers and even set up an online donation campaign. The firefighters, inspired by Amy’s generosity, were determined to make a positive impact on her family’s life. The community’s response was overwhelming, and soon enough, they raised enough money not only for a quality wheelchair but also to cover the medical expenses for Amy’s father. The sense of unity and compassion within the community transformed a small act of kindness into a powerful force for good.

Then she went to the cashier (收银员) and secretly paid for their meal.
