For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smartphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 13 connect to the Internet using a mobile device (移动设备) from time to time. Many younger kids are online too.
Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents if something is wrong.” Julian says.
Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.
Have you ever had to enter a parent’s email address when signing up for a website? That safety net is there because of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act(COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent’s permission (允许). However, COPPA doesn’t cover everything that can go wrong online. That’s why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online.
“There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs kidSAFE, which checks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. “It’s important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it also can be dangerous if you are not careful,” he adds.
12. Julian’s parents check his web use to make sure ________.
A. he doesn’t watch too many videos B. he doesn’t play computer games
C. he controls his online time D. he stays safe on the Internet
13. How does the author explain children’s unpleasant online experiences?
A. By describing his own experiences. B. By showing differences.
C. By presenting scientific research. D. By using examples.
14. People often hold the wrong idea that ________.
A. COPPA can ensure their complete safety B. the Internet is becoming safer and safer
C. formal websites are always safe D. daily checks prevent future online problems
15. What’s the main purpose of the text?
A. To ask parents to look out for their kids. B. To offer tips online safety.
C. To tell people to be careful online. D. To introduce an online law.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. C
【解析】

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.(一项研究发现,62%的8至17岁儿童曾有过不愉快的网络经历)”可推断,作者主要是通过引用研究结果来说明孩子们不愉快的上网经历。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe(有一种误解认为,如果一个网站遵循COPPA规定,就完全安全)”可知,人们认为遵循COPPA法案的网站可以确保他们上网的绝对安全,然而事实表明,这是错误的观念。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor his web use and discuss Internet safety with him.(来自新泽西州的9岁男孩朱利安·齐特林格用电脑观看视频和玩游戏。为了让他在线上安全,他的父母会监控他的网络使用情况,并与他讨论网络安全问题)”结合文章主要介绍了儿童上网的安全问题及COPPA儿童在线隐私保护法案的发展等特征,由此可推知,文章的目的是告诉人们要在网上小心。

In the first and second grades, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn’t very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.
So in our school’s annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.
One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, “Oh, Mary, you re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny! ‘ But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, “Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don’t want to, I won’t force you. It’s your choice.”
My mind was spinning (快速旋转) faster than the windmill (风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, “If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon.” I looked into Mrs. Sally’s shining blue eyes and said, “Okay, I’ll try.” I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was.
In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered (掌握) my lines and songs.

At that time, Mrs. Sally came backstage for her final check-up and noticed that my nervousness. “It doesn’t matter how you do tonight,” she said. “You’ve already shown how wonderful you are.” Looking into Mrs Sally’s shining blue eyes, I calmed down and then walked onto the stage with his warm words like a ray of sunshine. When I finished my performance, the audience burst into applause. The scene made me feel myself floating in an ocean of happiness.
注意:1、续写词数应为150左右;
