Starter Unit 2 Keep Tidy! Lesson 3 Section B 1a-2b & Project
Teaching Objectives
1. Correctly use prepositions in, on, under to describe the locations of objects; master general questions about positions and short answers.
2. Write complete sentences to describe the colors of items accurately.
3. Take an active part in classroom games using target language, and develop communication, cooperation and critical thinking skills.
Teaching Content
This lesson centers on the theme of putting things in proper places. It includes two dialogues with matching pictures set at the home of twin sisters Emma and Ella.
Dialogue 1 (Ella’s bedroom)
Ella cannot find her cap and turns to her mother for help. The picture shows her messy room, which reflects her bad habit of not organizing belongings. Mum reminds her, You need to keep your room tidy, matching the unit title and conveying the core value: students should put things back after use and maintain neat spaces.
Dialogue 2 (Living room)
Dad looks for his glasses while still wearing them, creating a funny plot to engage learners. Both dialogues review and extend vocabulary about objects, colors and positions, and reuse the prepositions in, on, under learned in primary school.
Writing Part
Model sentences for describing items’ colors and positions are provided. Students imitate and write sentences to introduce things in their own bedrooms.
Project Game: Guess Classroom Objects
This three-step guessing game creates information gaps and encourages full class participation:
1. Write down one classroom item on paper to check mastery of unit vocabulary.
2. Ask partners questions about the object’s color and position to narrow down the range.
3. Use Is it… / Are they… to make guesses after four questions, consolidating singular/plural nouns and matching be verbs.
The competitive game boosts students’ interest in oral English and naturally integrates all key vocabulary and sentence patterns.

Students’ Activities
Design Purposes
5 mins
1. Observe the bedroom picture in 1a and identify the place.
2. Point out items in the picture: a bed, a desk, a chair, shoes, a box; judge if the room is tidy. Circle three items from the text: a schoolbag, some books, a pair of socks.
3. Describe where the three items lie, learn prepositions in, on, under, then use them for other objects in the image.
Activate prior vocabulary through visual observation; master singular & plural nouns; grasp prepositional phrases for locations.
10 mins
4. Examine the two pictures in 1b, circle a new cap and glasses, and infer the scene and characters’ relationship.
Train pre-reading prediction skills and teach students to mark key nouns.
10 mins
5. Read the two dialogues and sort out details in charts: who lost things, what the items are, their locations and colors.
6. Reread and answer guiding questions: Why do Ella and Dad search for items? How do Mum and Emma help? What advice does Mum give? How do they show politeness? Learn expressions for offering help, giving advice, apologizing and thanking.
7. Read the dialogues aloud.
Develop skimming & scanning skills; accumulate functional daily phrases; consolidate core sentence structures.
15 mins
8. Work in pairs to ask and answer about items’ colors and positions based on 1b pictures; discuss the importance of tidying rooms.
9. Complete writing tasks with sentence frames to describe items in their bedrooms. Exchange compositions and evaluate peers from four aspects: correct information, proper language, rich vocabulary and neat handwriting.
Practice oral interaction in real contexts; transfer knowledge to personal life; develop peer assessment ability.
Homework
1. Revise and polish the four sentences written in class.
2. Combine the sentences into a short paragraph (optional).
Homework Purpose
Consolidate vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in this lesson.
