How Swimming Makes Us Happy and Healthy
“Swimming is a way for us to remember how to play,” Bonnie Tsui wrote in her 2020 book Why We Swim. In fact, for many people, memories of swimming are often playful ones: spending long days on the beach, playing in the waves, or jumping into a pool. __1__ Some experts even say it might be the best type of exercise we can do — no matter how old you are! Here are some more reasons why swimming is great for you.
It helps build stronger muscles.
A swim session will typically give you a full-body workout. __2__ This movement includes the muscles in your arms, legs, shoulders and more. “It's probably safe to assume that if you can name a muscle, it's likely used at some point during swimming,” Mitch Lomax, a sports physiologist at the University of Portsmouth, told National Geographic.
Swimming is also a low-impact sport, meaning it doesn't put a lot of pressure on the body's joints. __3__ Take weightlifting as an example. When you lift more weight, your knees perhaps will be hurt.
It helps build stronger heart.
Research has shown that swimming can reduce a person's risk of heart attack and stroke, by improving circulation in the body and increasing the heart's efficiency.
__4__ While it may feel quite hard to breathe after a difficult swim session, it means your lungs are working harder! This increases your lung capacity, and strengthens the heart.
__5__
Swimming is not only good for the body but it's also good for the mind. It's been found to help people feel less depressed or anxious. Moreover, it improves sleep. According to some studies, when our bodies move through water, our brains release serotonin (血清素) and dopamine (多巴胺), hormones (荷尔蒙) that increase feelings of happiness. This will be beneficial to our sleep and mind.
A.It helps build stronger mind.
B.It helps build stronger emotions.
C.When you swim, your heart rate increases.
D.But there's more to swimming than just fun.
E.Your muscles will become tense after you swim.
F.Pushing yourself through the water requires lots of different muscles working together.
G.So you can strengthen your muscles with a lower risk of getting injured than with other sports.
The Olympics always produce some memorable images. The 2024 Olympics were no __6__. Woodhall Hunter's hug with Davis was an impressive one.

This surgery turned out to be the __11__ thing for Woodhall.
After the __12__, Woodhall had artificial legs and went on to compete in youth football, basketball and wrestling. Later, it was on the track that he __13__ himself. Then Woodhall competed in college against able-bodied athletes and then the Paralympics.
The __14__ to continually get better has had to come from __15__. “Coaches are not very strict,” his father says. “They don't __16__ get mad at you. They kind of put you in a glass box. So the motivation is all his. He has __17__ himself.”
As the __18__ on the track have added up, so have his medals. Woodhall won one competition after another. It has proved that track is where he __19__, and it is where he met the love of his life, Olympic Gold Medalist Davis.

[A]
根据Event Certification Requirements部分的“If the course is not certified, the Race Director must provide documentation showing how the course was measured, including at least two measurements using an odometer or GPS.”
根据Major Governing Bodies部分的“ITRA focuses on the wild world of trail ultrarunning”可知,ITRA(国际越野跑协会)主要管理野外的越野超马拉松比赛。
根据International Events部分的“If an event involves multiple countries, the portion of the route in the host country must make up at least 50% of the total distance to be counted.”
根据第一段的“My son Nick had been eager to try rock climbing and he needed a partner ... But I still decided to join him in a training class”可知,作者起初参加攀岩是为了陪伴儿子。
根据第二段作者说的话“A piece of me would slip away. It would be forgotten and lie passive forever.”,再结合其前她受伤后担心可能再也不能攀岩可知,作者觉得攀岩已经成了她自身的一部分,害怕失去这一部分的自我,即害怕失去从攀岩中获得的自我认同。
根据第三段的“Nick was supportive throughout the process ... Along the way Nick guided and encouraged me. To my surprise, I made it to the top and back to the ground safely.”
根据第一段中“every day you manage to fit in an additional one-hour walk, you could be boosting your lifespan by an extra six hours”可知,新研究发现每天散步可能有助于延长寿命。
根据第二段中“It can be any type of exercise to reach that top quartile but would roughly be the equivalent of just about three hours of walking per day.”
根据画线词下文“implying a lack of commitment to regular exercise”可知,这个术语有时带有负面含义,由此可知,hostile意为“消极的,负面的”。
根据第二段中的“The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends ...75 minutes of high intensity exercise each week to maintain good health.”
根据第三段中的“weekend warriors exhibited a comparable reduction in their risks of developing conditions such as dementia and depression, similar to those who exercised consistently throughout the week”可知,关于“周末战士”的研究发现他们可以获得与经常锻炼的人相似的健康益处。
根据最后一段中的“As long as individuals are meeting the recommended exercise guidelines, the timing of their works is less important than previously thought.”
19.选F 上文“The best way to get started is to simply go for a stroll.”

The running part was John's least favorite. No equipment to help — just him, his sneakers and the pavement. Several runners passed him. He felt the struggle as he pushed forward, his breathing labored. He could hear the audience shouting with kindness, “You got this!” Glancing back, he saw the official ambulance just behind him in case he collapsed. He refused to walk, even though walking would probably have been faster than his foot-dragging way of running. Sweating all over, he kept moving.
Finally, John crossed the finish line, Zane waiting there. Yes! Zane was there, recording the precious moment with his cellphone. Hugging and congratulating his father merrily, Zane said he loved doing a triathlon with him, no matter what the outcome. By that time, John's embarrassment of being the last racer had been replaced by pride. He had achieved something more impressive than finishing a triathlon. After all, the real victory was that he didn't give up. He made himself a role model for his son!
