Why Media Literacy Matters
These days, teens are heavily influenced by the media. Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven’t yet considered the hours they spend using the Internet and reading newspapers.
However, several studies have shown a serious problem: Today’s teens lack media literacy. In other words, they have difficulty critically thinking about the information they see. One study focused on middle school students. It found more than 80 percent of them couldn’t tell the difference between real news stories and ads that looked like news.
Stanford University professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literacy. The professor gave an example that shows why media literacy matters. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One focuses on the terrible road conditions. The other focuses on kids playing in the snow. “With a news story, news stations tell you what they feel are the important details. These details largely depend on the opinions of the news director,” said John. “A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one aspect at one point in time. There is more going on.”
Some experts think school is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone—from parents to journalists—should help teens learn the skill.
As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many experts recommend the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy,” said John.
1.What can we conclude from paragraph 1?
A.Teens today spend more time using the internet than watching TV.
B.Teens today spend more time watching TV than studying at school.
C.Teens today spend more time reading newspapers than watching TV.

2.What is the serious problem that several studies have shown?
A.Many teens today don’t read the news.
B.Many teens are not reading real news stories.
C.Many teens today are not interested in school.
D.Many teens cannot think critically about the information they see.
3.The underlined word “matters” in paragraph 3 can probably be replaced by ________.
A.is boring B.is popular C.is important D.is interesting
4.What does the example Professor Kevin John gave show?
A.Some news directors are not responsible.
B.Different news stories focus on different details.
C.Many of his students do not have media literacy.
D.It’s hard to tell the difference between real news and ads.
5.Many experts suggest children start learning media literacy ________.
A.when they are able to read
B.when they are 12 years old
C.after they get into high school
D.after they get into middle school
6.Which of the following statements would Professor Kevin John agree with?

C.Children should be taught media literacy as early as possible.
D.It’s too early for children to learn media literacy in their teens.

Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher, and photographer. His words and beautiful images show his love of photography and of the natural world.
Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer?
My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one-day job. And that led to a nine-day job, and so on.

What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos.

Peer Counselors: Warm Helpers for Teenagers
Now more and more middle schools set up peer counseling groups for Grade 9 students. Peer counselors are ordinary students who receive special training to listen to classmates’ troubles and offer useful advice. Unlike teachers, they stand at the same age stage, so they can fully understand the pressure and confusion that teenagers face every day.
The training for peer counselors lasts for four weeks. Teachers teach them how to listen patiently, how to ask proper guiding questions, and how to keep all classmates’ personal secrets strictly. The most important rule for every counselor is never to spread others’ private stories to any third person. If they break this rule, they will lose the qualification to work in the group.
Students can visit peer counselors during noon break or after school. The problems they talk about cover different sides of teenage life: conflicts with parents, difficulties in making friends, stress from schoolwork, and worries about self-image. Peer counselors cannot solve all big problems, but they can create a safe space for troubled students to pour out their feelings. Many students say after talking, their heavy hearts become much lighter.
A peer counselor called Tom shared his working experience. Last month, a classmate came to him, upset because his parents disagreed with his dream of learning photography. Tom did not give direct advice at once. Instead, he asked the boy to list all the advantages of photography and how he planned to balance study and hobbies. Later, the boy wrote a detailed plan and had a peaceful talk with his parents, and they finally reached an agreement.
Experts say peer counseling brings two-way benefits. For students with troubles, they get emotional comfort and practical suggestions. For counselors themselves, they learn to care for others, improve communication skills and become more responsible people. It is a valuable growing experience for both sides.
However, peer counselors have clear limits. If students meet serious problems such as long-term depression or family conflicts that cannot be solved, counselors must guide them to turn to professional school teachers or psychological experts for further help.
Answer the following questions according to the passage.
Task 1:
1.Who are peer counselors in schools?
2.How long does the training for peer counselors last?
3.What is the most important rule for peer counselors?
4.Why did Tom’s classmate feel upset when he went to Tom?
5.What two kinds of benefits does peer counseling bring?
Task 2:
6.What will you do if you are the counselor when students face serious mental troubles? (No more than 30 words)

In the cultural heart of Paris, along the streets of Saint-Germain-des-Pres, an elderly man’s cheerful voice often rings out: “France is getting better!” Ali Akbar, now 73, has been selling newspapers here for decades (十年). With copies of Le Monde under his arm, he walks through the Left Bank, creating his own catchy headlines to attract customers. “I do it to create a good mood,” he says. “I want people to live happily.”
Akbar came to France in 1973 and began working as a newspaper hawker. Though Paris once had about 40 hawkers, Akbar stood out with his energy and optimism. His hard work was finally recognized by the country, and he even received a high national honor from the French government. Akbar believes this honor ________.
Today, Akbar still works from afternoon until evening, selling about 30 papers daily. In a digital age, his presence reminds people of a simpler joy. As a young cafe visitor, Amel Ghali, says: “He is inspiring (鼓舞人心的). Unfortunately, our children might not experience the simple pleasure of reading a newspaper with a coffee.”
1.What job does Ali Akbar do in Paris?
2.Does Ali Akbar use the newspaper’s original headlines to sell?

Unlike others who stayed in busy spots, he chose to walk around the sixth arrondissement (区), a university area near the River Seine (塞纳河). He remembers learning French by chatting with students. Over time, he became a beloved part of the neighborhood. “Even regular tourists ask where he is if they don’t see him,” says Amina Qissi, a local waitress.

Today, Akbar still works from afternoon until evening, selling about 30 papers daily. In a digital age, his presence reminds people of a simpler joy. A Turning Point in My Teenage Life
Last month’s class speech competition was a vital turning point for me. I used to be terrified of speaking before crowds, often shaking and forgetting my words, so I almost wanted to give up to avoid embarrassment.
Our class peer counsellor cheered me up and suggested writing sincere ideas and practicing every night. I followed her tips and practiced the speech countless times. On the competition day, though nervous, I finished steadily and won third prize.
This experience transformed me. I no longer hide myself in class. I understand fear is not an excuse to quit. Persistent practice and courage can break our limits and make us better.
