One day her parents went away on business, 4 she had to stay at home alone. At first, she felt relaxed because her parents were not at home. She could do everything that she liked. But when it was six o’clock in the afternoon, she was hungry. “Oh, it’s time 5 dinner. Where can I get my food?” she said to herself. 6 , she found some food in the fridge, but she didn’t know how to cook. She tried her best to cook 7 , but she burned them. At that time, she 8 her parents very much because she wanted her parents to cook for her. At last, she could only go to a Chinese restaurant and buy some food to eat. When her parents came back home, she felt so 9 and told her parents how bad her day was. Many teenagers are the same as Polly. So I think teenagers should keep learning some basic life skills. Like many other 7 , the competitions between videos are also sharp (激烈的). There are so many videos and vloggers out there already. They should make their videos so different from others’ 8 people could enjoy them. Although there are many difficulties, it’s 9 to have dreams and follow them. If you could see into their private lives, you would find these stars aren’t so bright. Some of them might not be 4 good looking, honest, kind or hard working as you are! When I was a teenager, I, 5 most of my classmates, had been fans of pop idols, too. Then, I discovered Leonard Cohen and Neil Young. They were ordinary looking people who played 6 guitar while sitting on a chair. They wore no flashy (艳丽的) clothes, and they had no crazy fans. They 7 to be flashy because their songs were great and meaningful. They told the truth: Life is hard and the road might sometimes be 8 . Most of all, they taught me that it was okay if I was not popular and cool all of the time. I still listen to them today. Modern “idol culture” often sends the wrong message that life is always easy and fun. But in fact, most of us have the stress of dealing with life’s many 9 . Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. That’s more time than they spend with teachers at school. And we haven’t yet considered the hours they spend using the Internet and reading newspapers. However, several studies have shown a serious problem: Today’s teens lack media literacy. In other words, they have difficulty critically thinking about the information they see. One study focused on middle school students. It found more than 80 percent of them couldn’t tell the difference between real news stories and ads that looked like news. Stanford University professor Kevin John teaches a class called Media Effects. He tries to help his students learn media literacy. The professor gave an example that shows why media literacy matters. In the example, two news stations report a snowstorm. One focuses on the terrible road conditions. The other focuses on kids playing in the snow. “With a news story, news stations tell you what they feel are the important details. These details largely depend on the opinions of the news director,” said John. “A person who has media literacy would realize that each story is about one aspect at one point in time. There is more going on.” Some experts think school is the best place to teach media literacy. Others believe everyone—from parents to journalists—should help teens learn the skill. As for the best time to start learning media literacy, many experts recommend the age of 12. But some basic ideas can be taught even earlier. “It’s never too early to start learning media literacy,” said John. 1.What can we conclude from paragraph 1? A.Teens today spend more time using the internet than watching TV. B.Teens today spend more time watching TV than studying at school. C.Teens today spend more time reading newspapers than watching TV. D.Teens today spend more time studying at school than using the Internet. 2.What is the serious problem that several studies have shown? A.Many teens today don’t read the news. B.Many teens are not reading real news stories. C.Many teens today are not interested in school. D.Many teens cannot think critically about the information they see. 3.The underlined word “matters” in paragraph 3 can probably be replaced by ________. A.is boring B.is popular C.is important D.is interesting 4.What does the example Professor Kevin John gave show? A.Some news directors are not responsible. B.Different news stories focus on different details. C.Many of his students do not have media literacy. D.It’s hard to tell the difference between real news and ads. 5.Many experts suggest children start learning media literacy ________. A.when they are able to read B.when they are 12 years old C.after they get into high school D.after they get into middle school 6.Which of the following statements would Professor Kevin John agree with? A.Media literacy should be taught mainly at school. B.News directors should report the news they’re interested in. C.Children should be taught media literacy as early as possible. D.It’s too early for children to learn media literacy in their teens. Violent Video Games: Harmless Fun or Gateways (途径) to Violence (暴力)? Video games filled with killing and other acts of violence are a favorite of many teenagers. Are they just harmless fun? Or should they be banned (禁止) for being damaging to young minds? Opinions differ widely. Here’s how seven people of different ages responded when asked, “Are violent video games a proper form of entertainment for teenagers?” Liam (17): “Yes! They’re just games. I’ve played them for years, and I’m not violent at all. A lot of adults think that young people can’t tell fantasy from reality, but that’s ridiculous. Maybe it’s true for very young children, but not for teens. It’s just like watching action movies. We know they’re just dumb fun, not something to copy in real life.” Sarah (42): “Not for my teenagers. I worry that by playing violent video games regularly, they’ll start seeing violence as a solution to everything. I don’t want my children’s first reaction to a problem to be shoot, shoot, kill, kill!” Jordan (25): “Well, I grew up playing them, and I turned out fine. In fact, I was quite an angry teenager, but I found that playing those games helped me let off steam. So in a weird way, they helped make me less aggressive (好斗的).” Emma (61): “No way. I’m a teacher, and over the years, I’ve noticed the kids in my class have become a lot more aggressive. I’m sure that change comes down to the growing popularity of this type of video games.” Mia (16): “I don’t personally like them-they scare me! But I think they’re fine if you like that kind of thing and your parents educate you about them. My little brother does, and my dad has spoken to him about them. He knows there’s nothing fun about real-life violence.” Carlos (30): “If we let kids watch violent movies and violence on the news, then I don’t see why violent video games should be off-limits. The world has violence in it, so these games help prepare teenagers for reality.” Ryan (36): “Maybe not the ones with super-realistic violence. I can see how they could set a bad example for some young people. But there are lots of games where the violence is really cartoonish. Those types are fine, I think, as they’re so obviously fantasy.” 1.Among the seven people, how many of them treat violent video games as definitely gateways to violence? A.1. B.2. C.3. D.4. 2.What can you infer from Liam’s opinion? A.Teenagers like watching action movies. B.Adults play games just for fun. C.Very young children are fond of playing games. D.Teenagers can tell games from reality. 3.What does the underlined expression “let off steam” mean? A.keep silent B.release stress C.become excited D.stay healthy 4.Which of the following is NOT a reason for those who think of violent games as harmless fun? A.Teens can tell fantasy from reality. B.Playing those games can help teens be less aggressive in a way. C.Parents can educate teens that there’s nothing fun about real-life violence. D.Super-realistic violence can help prepare teens for reality. 5.In which section of a newspaper might we find this passage? A.Sports. B.Politics. C.Society. D.Science. 6.What’s the main purpose of the passage? A.To show different opinions on violent games. B.To suggest that violent video games should be banned at home. 【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.B 5.B 6.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了青少年媒体素养的现状、问题,以及专家对媒体素养教育的重要性和最佳学习时机的看法。 1.推理判断题。根据“Many of them have watched thousands of hours of TV. C.To emphasize the harm of real-life violence. D.To warn people of the bad influence of violent games. 【答案】1.B 2.D 3.B 4.D 5.C 6.A 【导语】本文围绕暴力电子游戏是否适合青少年这一话题,收录七位不同年龄、身份人士的不同看法,有人认为它只是娱乐、能宣泄情绪、不必禁止;也有人担忧其会助长暴力倾向、对青少年产生不良影响。 1.根据Sarah部分“I worry that by playing violent video games regularly, they’ll start seeing violence as a solution to everything.”;Emma部分“over the years, I’ve noticed the kids in my class have become a lot more aggressive. I’m sure that change comes down to the growing popularity of this type of video games.”‘可知,认为暴力游戏一定会催生暴力行为的共2人。 2.根据Liam部分“A lot of adults think that young people can’t tell fantasy from reality, but that’s ridiculous. Maybe it’s true for very young children, but not for teens.”可知,说明青少年能够区分游戏与现实。 3.根据Jordan部分“In fact, I was quite an angry teenager, but I found that playing those games helped me let off steam. So in a weird way, they helped make me less aggressive (好斗的).”可知,Jordan年少易怒,玩这类游戏帮他排解情绪,变得不那么好斗。 4.根据Ryan部分“Maybe not the ones with super-realistic violence.
