A scientist born in 1930 in China had a dream when he was a child. In the dream, he grew a new type of rice that was as big as a peanut. The plant was tall enough to allow farmers to rest in its shade. That child was Yuan Longping.
In the 1960s, a few years after he finished his studies in agriculture at university, he came up with an idea for hybrid rice. Then he spent much of his time researching and developing new varieties.
In 1973, together with other scientists, he succeeded in developing hybrid rice. The introduction of this new product helped farmers produce much more rice and made China a leader in rice production. For this, he became known as the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. In 1980, the technology for hybrid rice was introduced to the United States, and later to many other countries around the world.

“Dream research is like high jumping,” Dr Yuan once said. “A new height is waiting for you after each jump. You will fall behind if you give up jumping.” He spent many years tirelessly working in the fields and made a great contribution to the development of global food production. In 2020, the 90-year-old was still setting higher goals for super hybrid rice.
In his spare time, Dr Yuan loved playing the violin and listening to music. Every night, he read for half an hour before he went to sleep. He liked swimming, too.
The great scientist passed away at the age of 91 in Changsha on May 22, 2021.
