Four months — that’s how long I trained for the Cebu City Marathon. My goal was to finally finish in under four hours. Every week, I pushed myself. Sundays were no longer days for rest; they were for long runs under the moon. On weekdays, I rushed home from work, tied my shoes, and trained before I could talk myself out of it. I skipped gatherings and turned down invitations, not because I valued running over people, but because I couldn’t afford to miss a single session. Every kilometer was an investment.
Then came race day. I woke up sick. My body hadn’t fully recovered, but my mind refused to give up. “You’ve trained too hard to quit now,” I told myself.
The first half went perfectly. My pace was steady. My finish time looked likely to be 3 hours and 50 minutes. The route — a flat road lined with the city’s landmarks — filled me with pride. I believed I was reaching the dream I’d worked so long for.
But as I entered the tunnel for the second time, everything changed. My heart rate shot up. The sickness returned, stronger than before. My body got heavier with each step. Soon I was walking. I thought about stopping — maybe even calling for an ambulance to take me back. But something inside me refused.
I walked the remaining half of the marathon. Not as the strong, goal-driven runner I’d hoped to be, but as someone who simply wouldn’t quit. I crossed the finish line in 5 hours and 39 minutes — far from my dream.
But as I reflected, I realized something. The marathon wasn’t defined by the medal, the time on my watch, or the number I’d hoped to see. It was defined by the months of preparation, the restless nights, the early mornings, the missed celebrations, and the effort I’d put into every single run.

Nelson Dellis is a six-time US memory champion. Recently, Roselyne Chauvin at Washington University has studied his brain in detail to understand how he achieved such a good memory and how we could learn some of the same skills.
During the study, Dellis was asked to rest in a scanning machine for a total of 13 hours while he was tested on his memory. In one of the tests, Dellis was asked to repeatedly remember a set of four to seven words that appeared one after another on a screen for just 1 second. He was told to use rote memorization, a technique that involves repeating things over and over to make them stick in the memory. His brain activity was then compared with that of two scientists, who acted as the controls and were considered to have very good — but not extraordinary — memories. The data showed that Dellis and the controls had similar brain activity during the test.
“But rote memorization is a terrible approach,” Dellis said after the test. “Lying in a scanner to memorize things is not exactly how I normally do.”
To step things up, another task — which was done only by Dellis — involved him memorizing the order of cards while his brain was scanned. This time, Dellis employed the method of loci, also known as a memory palace. It involves relating information to specific locations in a familiar place like your home, and then mentally walking through it to help recall (回忆) the information in order.
“Loci is the foundation of almost every memory technique I use,” explained Dellis. “We were not born to memorize abstract (抽象) things like numbers or language. Instead, we were born to find our food and know where to avoid threats.”
But Morris Moscovitch at the University of Toronto said that it is unclear to what extent others can use this technique to improve their memory and how Dellis has approached such an extraordinary memory. “For better everyday memory, do what your mother told you — pay attention, eat well, sleep well and exercise,” Moscovitch said.
28.Which of the following belongs to rote memorization?
A.Read a phone number again and again.
B.Make a funny story with new words.
C.Put a picture beside each phone number.
D.Find connections among new words.
29.According to Nelson Dellis, what is key to achieving his extraordinary memory?
A.Imagination. B.Repetition. C.Timing. D.Food.
30.What does Morris Moscovitch want to stress?
A.Parents’ advice should be valued. B.Dellis’s techniques are unscientific.
C.Memory palace should be popularized. D.Good habits can improve our memory.
31.In which section of a website may this text appear?
A.Games. B.Science. C.Art. D.Education.

High school is a crucial period when students are faced with heavy academic pressure and various life challenges. Many students fall into two extremes: either buried in books all day with no time for relaxation, or addicted to entertainment ignoring their studies. However, neither extreme is beneficial to healthy growth. The key to a meaningful high school life lies in balancing study and life.
On one hand, study is the main task of high school students. It lays the foundation for future development and helps students gain knowledge, improve abilities and realize their potential. Diligence and hard work are necessary for academic progress. Without enough study time, students cannot master knowledge or achieve good grades. However, excessive study can be harmful. Studying for long hours without rest leads to tiredness, low efficiency and even health problems such as poor eyesight and stress.
On the other hand, life beyond study is equally important. Relaxation, hobbies and social activities help students relax their minds, reduce pressure and develop social skills. Sports build up the body; music and art enrich the mind; communicating with friends teaches empathy and cooperation. These experiences make students well‑rounded individuals, not just learning machines. However, too much entertainment will distract students from their studies, leading to poor academic performance and regret.
Balancing study and life is not easy but achievable. Students should make a reasonable schedule, arrange time for both study and rest, and stick to it. They should learn to focus on study when studying and enjoy life when relaxing. Remember, high school life is not only about grades but also about growth, health and happiness. A balanced life helps students grow into healthy, happy and capable individuals.
32.What problem is Paragraph 1 mainly about?
A.Heavy academic pressure.
B.Lack of entertainment.
C.Unbalanced study and life.
D.No time for hobbies.
33.What is the disadvantage of excessive study?
A.Wasting time.
B.Causing health issues.
C.Reducing social skills.
D.Missing important knowledge.
34.Why are hobbies and sports important?
A.They help students make more friends.
B.They improve students’ grades.
C.They develop students’ overall qualities.
D.They help students become more independent.
35.What is the author’s advice?
A.Focus all attention on study.
B.Spend more time on entertainment.
C.Balance study and life properly.
D.Make a detailed study plan.
Four Traits of Extraordinary Ordinary People
Being extraordinary isn’t reserved for the rich, the famous, or the powerful. Extraordinary people exist within even the most seemingly ordinary lives. 36 — a teacher who made us feel seen, a relative who helped us believe in our dreams, a friend who created a circle of acceptance wide enough for all.
Those we consider extraordinary are likely to have four vital qualities:
37
The extraordinary person knows it’s the intrinsic (内在的) qualities that bring true satisfaction — those that satisfy our needs for emotional closeness and personal growth. By contrast, extrinsic things such as physical attractiveness, wealth and fame can damage our well-being by setting us up to feel that what we have is never enough.
Kindness
I once read a news article about a school crossing guard whom a whole community had honoured. Why? Because he was kind. He knew the kids by name. He talked to them about their days. He even remembered their birthdays. 38 . They are special because they have the gift of making others feel special.
An ability to connect
Extraordinary people make others a priority. They are the ones who remember our names, ask us questions and care about the answers, and leave us feeling heard and valued. 39 , paying attention to their feelings and respecting their needs, just as they do for those around them.
A willingness to be seen as imperfect
40 , but they’re the ones who put themselves out there despite their failures. Those who are willing to reach for the extraordinary — understand that criticism and rejection are the price we sometimes pay for trying, that we all have fear, and that defeat doesn’t equal unworthiness. This willingness gives them the freedom to pursue their dreams and tap into (利用) their creative powers.
A.Joyfulness
B.We all know people like this
C.They welcome what they get
D.A focus on the things that matter
E.It’s not that extraordinary people never fail
F.Extraordinary people also connect with themselves
G.We can all name extraordinary people who have touched us

He had used very hard wood, thinking that strength was the only important thing. 59 he saw the willow, he laughed. “You are too weak,” he said. “You bend for every wind. You have no pride.”

“Being hard is not always being strong,” the old man explained. “The oak fights the wind, and finally, it breaks. The willow gives in, and it lives. To be truly strong, you must know when to bend.” Thomas looked at the willow again with respect. He understood that he needed to learn how 63 (adapt) in his work and life.
“There’s no way I’m leaving vacation early for Junior Varsity (JV) tennis tryouts (初中网球校队选拔赛) ,” my 14-year-old daughter Emily said. “I doubt whether I’ll make the team.”
“Do you want to be on the team?” I asked.
“I do, but I’ll probably get cut.”
As a little girl, Emily was fearless. But like many middle schoolers, she’ d started to become more cautious and less willing to make mistakes. My husband and I always said to our fearless daughter, “Honey, why not put yourself out there?”
Her brother Ben, then 15, looked up from his phone.
“Well, you know, you should try out for JV. You definitely won’t make the team if you don’t have a try,” he said.
“Are you out of your mind?” Emily asked. “If I take the challenge, what if I fail?”
“If you don’t take the challenge, what if you regret?” he responded.
We encouraged her to take risks, to own her goals, to learn from failure and to bounce back from disappointment. Finally, she was determined to tell the coach to have a try.
The night before JV tryouts, the coach emailed the player and explained the process. Each day, the girls could challenge the person directly above them on the ladder. At the end of the week, the top 12 players would make the team.
Emily came downstairs to show me the email, highlighting one data point in particular. “I told you,” she said. “I really am ranked the lowest. Number 25 out of 25 players.”
“Look on the bright side.” I said. “You’ve got nowhere to go but up.”
The next morning, she seemed a little nervous, and I patted her gently as encouragement. I drove her to the school playground, comforting “Come on, you have the whole week to find the result.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
When I picked her up that afternoon, she was noticeably calmer.

W: Yes, talent just gives you a head start, but life is a marathon, and those who hold on until the very end are the winners.
M: You know as well as I do. The students who do the best are usually the ones who study the hardest.
W: Yes, I’ve known a few kids who take their talents for granted and haven’t really pushed themselves, and they ended up falling behind. Turn talents into their advantages, not into excuses.
M: Yes. Think about athletes. Behind the gold medal, there must be sweat and tears.

Good morning. My name is Anthony Walters. Welcome to Foundations of Management and Entrepreneurship. This course is unique in that it is taught by a team of 3 professors. I’ll be teaching the first unit on business management, Professor Amy Watkins the second unit on accounting, and guest lecturer Pablo Chavez the third on organizational behavior. There will be an exam at the end of each unit, in addition to a final exam at the end of the course. Readings will be assigned weekly. Since this course is on several different topics, there’s no course textbook. For my unit, I’ll be providing photocopies of the weekly readings beforehand. However, since there are so many of you, I will require a small photocopying fee of $10 to pay for the copying costs. This way is much cheaper than requiring you to buy textbooks, believe me. I will let you know more about that later. Okay, now let me hand out a copy of the course outline.

A.Good health is important in a competition.
B.It is wise for people to make a detailed plan.
C.It is necessary for one to set long-term goals.
D.Success lies more in steady efforts than ideal results.
【答案】24.A 25.C 26.B 27.D
根据第一段“I skipped gatherings and turned down invitations, not because I valued running over people, but because I couldn’t afford to miss a single session.(我推掉聚会、拒绝邀约,并非我把跑步看得比人情重要,而是我不能错过任何一次训练。)”
根据第二段“My body hadn’t fully recovered, but my mind refused to give up. “You’ve trained too hard to quit now,” I told myself.(我的身体还未完全恢复,但我的内心不愿放弃。我告诉自己:付出了这么多努力,现在不能停下。)”可知,作者因为内心强烈的不甘放弃,所以坚持继续比赛。
26.推理判断题。根据第一段“Four months — that’s how long I trained for the Cebu City Marathon. My goal was to finally finish in under four hours. Every week, I pushed myself.
【答案】28.A 29.A 30.D 31.B
根据第二段中“He was told to use rote memorization, a technique that involves repeating things over and over to make them stick in the memory. (他被要求使用死记硬背法,这是一种通过反复重复来让信息留在记忆中的技巧)”可知,死记硬背法(rote memorization)通过反复重复来让信息留存,所以反复阅读电话号码属于死记硬背法。
29.推理判断题。根据第四段中“This time, Dellis employed the method of loci, also known as a memory palace. It involves relating information to specific locations in a familiar place like your home, and then mentally walking through it to help recall (回忆) the information in order.(这一次,Dellis运用了轨迹记忆法,也称为记忆宫殿法。
根据最后一段“For better everyday memory, do what your mother told you — pay attention, eat well, sleep well and exercise (要想提高日常记忆力,就照你妈妈说的做——集中注意力、吃好、睡好、锻炼好)”可知,Morris Moscovitch想强调的是良好的习惯可以改善我们的记忆力。
通读全文,结合第一段“Nelson Dellis is a six-time US memory champion. Recently, Roselyne Chauvin at Washington University has studied his brain in detail to understand how he achieved such a good memory and how we could learn some of the same skills. (Nelson Dellis是六次美国记忆冠军。最近,华盛顿大学的Roselyne Chauvin详细研究了他的大脑,以了解他是如何获得如此好的记忆力,以及我们如何学习一些相同的技能)”以及后文对记忆技巧的科学分析可知,文章主要介绍了关于记忆力的科学研究,因此最可能出现在网站的“科学”板块。

根据第一段中“Many students fall into two extremes: either buried in books all day with no time for relaxation, or addicted to entertainment ignoring their studies. However, neither extreme is beneficial to healthy growth. The key to a meaningful high school life lies in balancing study and life.(许多学生陷入两个极端:要么整天埋头读书没有时间放松,要么沉迷娱乐忽视学业。然而,这两种极端都不利于健康成长。有意义的高中生活关键在于平衡学习与生活)”可知,第一段主要讨论的是学习与生活的失衡问题。
33.细节理解题。根据第二段中“However, excessive study can be harmful. Studying for long hours without rest leads to tiredness, low efficiency and even health problems such as poor eyesight and stress.(然而,过度学习是有害的。长时间学习不休息会导致疲劳、效率低,甚至引发健康问题,如视力下降和压力)”可知,过度学习的弊端在于会引发健康问题。
34.细节理解题。根据第三段中“These experiences make students well-rounded individuals, not just learning machines.(这些经历使学生成为全面发展的个体,而不仅仅是学习机器)”可知,爱好和运动有助于培养学生的综合素质。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Balancing study and life is not easy but achievable. Students should make a reasonable schedule, arrange time for both study and rest, and stick to it.(平衡学习和生活虽不易,但可以做到。学生应制定合理的时间表,安排好学习和休息时间,并坚持下去)”可知,作者的建议是恰当地平衡学习和生活。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
G.We can all name extraordinary people who have touched us
上文“Extraordinary people exist within even the most seemingly ordinary lives. (非凡的人存在于即使是最看似普通的生活中。)”指出平凡的人也是非凡的,下文“a teacher who made us feel seen, a relative who helped us believe in our dreams, a friend who created a circle of acceptance wide enough for all. (一个让我们感到被关注的老师,一个帮助我们相信梦想的亲戚,一个为所有人创造足够宽容的朋友圈的朋友。)”举例说明。G项“We can all name extraordinary people who have touched us (我们都能说出那些触动过我们的非凡之人)”承上启下,引出下文的具体例子。
下文“The extraordinary person knows it’s the intrinsic (内在的) qualities that bring true satisfaction — those that satisfy our needs for emotional closeness and personal growth. By contrast, extrinsic things such as physical attractiveness, wealth and fame can damage our well-being by setting us up to feel that what we have is never enough. (非凡之人深知,真正带来满足感的源于内在品质——那些能满足我们对情感亲近与个人成长需求的品质。相比之下,外在因素如外貌吸引力、财富和名声会损害我们的幸福感,使我们产生所拥有的一切永远不够的感觉。)”说明非凡之人关注内在而非外在。D项“A focus on the things that matter (关注真正重要的事)”概括了这一品质。
38.上文“I once read a news article about a school crossing guard whom a whole community had honoured. Why? Because he was kind. He knew the kids by name. He talked to them about their days. He even remembered their birthdays.(我曾看过一篇新闻报道,讲述一位校园路口安全员受到了整个社区的敬重。缘由很简单:他心地善良。他能叫出每个孩子的名字,会和孩子们聊聊日常,甚至还记得他们的生日。)”通过学校过街安全员的事例说明他因善良而受尊敬,下文“They are special because they have the gift of making others feel special. (他们之所以特别,是因为他们有让别人感到特别的天赋。)”进行总结。B项“We all know people like this (我们都认识这样的人)”承上启下,连接具体事例与总结性评价。
39.本段标题为“An ability to connect (建立联系的能力)”,上文“They are the ones who remember our names, ask us questions and care about the answers, and leave us feeling heard and valued. (他们记得我们的名字,问我们问题,关心我们的回答,让我们感到被倾听和被重视。)”说明他们与他人建立联系,下文“paying attention to their feelings and respecting their needs, just as they do for those around them. (关注他们的感受并尊重他们的需求正如他们善待身边之人一般)”说明非凡的人也关注自身。F项“Extraordinary people also connect with themselves (非凡的人也与自己建立联系)”中also表示递进,与上文形成“既与他人连接,也与自己连接”的逻辑。
40.本段标题为“A willingness to be seen as imperfect (愿意被视为不完美)”,下文“but they’re the ones who put themselves out there despite their failures. (但他们是那些尽管失败仍勇于尝试的人。)”中but说明空处内容与下文为转折关系。E项“It’s not that extraordinary people never fail (并非非凡之人从不失败)”与下文构成“不是……而是……”的转折逻辑,且共同说明了“不完美”。

第二节(共10小题:每小题1. 5分, 满分15分)
阅读下面短文, 在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
In a small village, there was a big willow tree (柳树). Unlike the strong oak trees (橡树) 56 stood straight, the willow was very 57 (flex). Its long branches moved gently in the wind. During storms, it bowed low to the ground but never broke.
One afternoon, a young carpenter 58 (name) Thomas walked by the tree. He was unhappy because his wooden table had broken. He had used very hard wood, thinking that strength was the only important thing. 59 he saw the willow, he laughed. “You are too weak,” he said. “You bend for every wind. You have no pride.”
An old man sitting under the tree heard Thomas. He smiled and picked up 60 dry stick. “Break this,” he said to the young man. Thomas broke it 61 (easy). “Now,” the old man said, 62 (point) to a thick oak branch, “try to bend that.” Thomas tried very hard, but the oak branch was too stiff.
He realized that true strength comes from the ability to change. From that day 64 , Thomas changed his mind. He became not only a better carpenter 65 a wiser man.
56.that/which 57.flexible 58.named 59.When 60.a 61.easily 62.pointing 63.to adapt 64.on 65.but
“how ____ (adapt) in his work and life”在句中作learn宾语,应用“疑问词+不定式”结构,即how to adapt。
from that day on表示“从那天起”,是固定短语。
not only...but (also)... 而且……”,是固定并列连词,连接名词短语“a better carpenter”和“a wiser man”,所以本空应用连词but。

One possible version:
Lessons from My Failure
Last semester, I joined a school English speech contest, which turned out to be a memorable experience. Nervous and unconfident, I forgot my prepared lines halfway on the stage, with my cheeks turning red instantly. Never had I felt so embarrassed in public before that moment. I rushed off the stage as I finished the speech, heart sinking with heavy disappointment.
My teacher and friends kept encouraging me after the failure. They gave me a lot of advice on adjusting my mood and improving my speech until I had the courage to step on the stage again.
This experience brought me far more growth than any easy success. I came to realize that it’s diligent preparation and steady confidence that matter most for any challenge.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

When I picked her up that afternoon, she was noticeably calmer. She said she beat Number 24. “How did you make it?” I asked with curiosity. “I encouraged myself to look on the bright side instead of focusing on the final result.” she poured out her delight with her eyes filled with light and hope. Over the course of the week, she continued to challenge up, Number 22, Number 19... Obviously, the other girls were all technically better, but she spared no efforts to fight for every strike. To our relief, she didn’t give up halfway, but moved forward bravely with the tryout proceeding.
One week later, Emily, landing at Number 15, was cut from the tryout. I searched my mind for any possible word to comfort her, but in vain. However, she said with a determined look, “That’s OK. I have push myself out there.” What she really cared about was no longer the result itself but the fighting process. She accomplished more than what she had expected. Number 15, for her, was a sign to show a brand - new herself, overcoming her fear and stepping out of her comfort zone. Emily’s experience, for us, is a reminder: Learn to take risks, have the courage to fail and go down fighting.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
When I picked her up that afternoon, she was noticeably calmer.
