七、阅读理解(共3篇短文,每篇5个小题,每题仅有一个最佳选项)
A Lake Hillier — Australia's Pink Lake
Lake Hillier is a special lake in Australia. It is famous for its bright pink color, which looks like strawberry milk. The lake is in the southwest of Australia, next to the Indian Ocean. It is about 600 meters long and 250 meters wide, but it is not very deep.
Scientists have studied the lake for many years. They are not completely sure why the lake is pink. Some think it is because of special algae and bacteria that live in the salty water. These tiny living things produce a red pigment that gives the water its unusual color. The pink color does not change even when the water is taken out of the lake, which makes it even more mysterious.
Visitors usually take a plane to see the lake from above because it is in a remote area and hard to reach by land. From the sky, you can see both the pink lake and the blue ocean. The contrast between the bright pink and the deep blue is striking. It looks like a beautiful painting created by nature. Many people come from all over the world to take photos and enjoy the amazing view.
The lake is surrounded by a white salt crust and green forest, making the scenery even more colorful. Although swimming in the lake is allowed, not many people try it because the water is very salty and the lake is difficult to reach. Lake Hillier is truly one of the most unusual and beautiful places in the world.

B A Memorable Trip to Yangshuo
Last summer, I went on a trip to Yangshuo, a beautiful town in the south of Guangxi, China. The town is famous for its special karst landscape — many hills with strange and interesting shapes.
The Li River runs through the town. On both sides of the river, you can see hills in all kinds of shapes. Some look like animals, and others look like people. One hill even looks like a big elephant drinking water! The views along the river were so breathtaking that I felt like I was traveling through a traditional Chinese painting.
When we arrived, my family and I decided to take a boat trip on the Li River. Sitting on the boat, we enjoyed the cool breeze and watched the green hills slowly pass by. It was such a peaceful experience. On the second day, we rented bikes and rode through the countryside. The rice fields stretched as far as we could see, and local farmers were busy working in the fields. They smiled warmly and waved to us. It made me feel the kindness of the local people.
The food in Yangshuo was also amazing. We tried the famous beer fish, which is cooked with local beer and tomatoes. It was delicious! We also enjoyed rice noodles and many other local dishes. There were also many street markets selling handmade souvenirs and snacks.
Yangshuo is a perfect place for people who love nature and adventure. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience the beauty of southern China.

C The Great Wall — More Than Just a Wall
The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous structures in the world. It was built over 2,000 years ago, starting in the Qin Dynasty, and was continuously expanded during later dynasties, especially the Ming Dynasty. Its main purpose was to protect the country from invasions by nomadic tribes from the north. The wall stretches across mountains, deserts, and grasslands, covering a total length of about 21,000 kilometers.
In ancient times, soldiers were stationed along the wall to guard the border. They built watchtowers at regular intervals, which served as both lookout posts and signal stations. When enemies were spotted, smoke signals were sent from one watchtower to another, warning the soldiers to prepare for battle.
Today, the Great Wall is no longer used for defense, but it remains a powerful symbol of the Chinese nation. It stands for the wisdom, hard work, and determination of the ancient Chinese people. As the saying goes, "He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man." This reflects the deep cultural meaning the wall holds in the hearts of the Chinese people.
Every year, millions of tourists from home and abroad visit the Great Wall to learn about its history and enjoy the spectacular views from the top. However, some parts of the wall are in poor condition and in need of repair. The Chinese government has made great efforts to protect this world-famous cultural heritage, because it is not just a wall, but a treasure of human civilization.
( )11. What was the main purpose of building the Great Wall?
A. To help people travel across mountains.
B. To protect the country from invasions.
C. To create a famous tourist attraction.
D. To connect different cities together.
( )12. How did soldiers communicate when enemies were spotted?
A. By using phones.
B. By sending smoke signals.
C. By riding horses.
D. By shouting loudly.
( )13. The underlined phrase "is no longer" in Paragraph 3 most probably means ______.
A. still is
B. used to be
C. is not... anymore
D. will be soon
( )14. According to the passage, why should we protect the Great Wall?
