七、阅读理解
A A Story That Touched My Heart
Last year, my English teacher asked us to read "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry. I had never heard of it before, but it quickly became one of my favourite stories.
The story is about a young couple, Della and Jim. They are very poor but love each other deeply. Della has beautiful long hair, and Jim has a gold watch that belonged to his father. On Christmas Eve, they both want to buy gifts for each other. Della sells her hair to buy a chain for Jim's watch. Jim sells his watch to buy a set of combs for Della's hair. In the end, their gifts are useless for each other, but their love is stronger than ever.
What moved me most was the way they thought of each other first. They were willing to give up their most prized possessions for each other. This taught me that the value of a gift is not in its price, but in the love behind it.
I think everyone should read this story. It reminds us that money is not the most important thing in life. True love and sacrifice are worth more than gold.

C. Christmas is the best time of the year. D. People should never sell their possessions.
B O. Henry and His Surprise Endings
O. Henry is one of America's most famous short story writers. His real name was William Sydney Porter. He was born in 1862 and died in 1910. During his lifetime, he wrote over 600 short stories.
What made O. Henry's stories so special? The answer is his "surprise endings". Almost every O. Henry story has a twist at the end. The readers think the story is going one way, but suddenly it takes a completely different turn. This keeps readers engaged and makes them want to read more.
His most famous story, "The Gift of the Magi", is a perfect example of this style. Throughout the story, we feel sorry for Della and Jim because they are so poor. We expect a sad ending. But then comes the surprise—Jim has sold his watch to buy combs for Della's hair, which she has already sold. The ending is both surprising and heartwarming.
O. Henry's stories are still loved today because they combine humor, emotion, and unexpected twists. His works remind us that life is full of surprises.

C What Is the Real Value of Money?
"The Gift of the Magi" tells a beautiful story about love and sacrifice. But it also raises an important question: what is the real value of money?
Money is a tool. It can buy us things we need—food, shelter, and clothing. It can also buy us things we want—entertainment, travel, and luxury items. However, there are many things that money cannot buy. It cannot buy true love, genuine friendship, or inner peace.
In the story, Della and Jim both give up their most valuable possessions to buy gifts for each other. The gifts become useless, but their love becomes even stronger. O. Henry tells us that they are "the wisest" because they understand what matters most in life. They know that love is worth more than gold.
In our modern world, many people believe that having money is the key to happiness. But the story challenges this idea. It suggests that true happiness comes from relationships, from giving, and from being willing to sacrifice for others.
Of course, we all need money to live. But we should never forget that the things money cannot buy are often the things that matter most.
( )11. What question does the passage try to answer?
A. How to become rich. B. What is the real value of money.
C. How to save money. D. Why O. Henry wrote stories.
( )12. According to the passage, what CAN money buy?
A. True love. B. Genuine friendship. C. Inner peace. D. Food and shelter.
( )13. Why does O. Henry call Jim and Della "the wisest"?
A. Because they were very rich. B. Because they understood what mattered most in life.
C. Because they were good with money. D. Because they bought expensive gifts.
( )14. What does the story "The Gift of the Magi" suggest about happiness?
A. Money is the key to happiness. B. Happiness comes from relationships and giving.
C. Happy people are always rich. D. Happiness is impossible when you are poor.
( )15. What is the author's final message?
A. Money is the most important thing. B. We should never spend money.
C. Money cannot buy the things that matter most. D. We should always buy expensive gifts.

Book Review: "The Gift of the Magi"
"The Gift of the Magi" is a short story by the American writer O. Henry. It was first published in 1905. The story is about a young couple, Della and Jim, who are very poor but very much in love. The story is set in New York City around Christmas time.
Della has beautiful long hair that reaches below her knees. Jim has a gold watch that once belonged to his father. Both of these are their most valuable possessions. On Christmas Eve, Della sells her hair to buy a platinum chain for Jim's watch. When Jim comes home, he is shocked to see Della with short hair. He tells Della that he sold his watch to buy a set of combs for her hair.
The ending of the story is unexpected. Their gifts are no longer useful because they have both given up what the gifts were meant for. However, O. Henry says that they are "the wisest" because they gave out of love. The story has been made into many films and is still widely read today.
