The summer vacation in New Delhi begins on May 1st every year. Much before it began we started planning how to spend it. I suggested that we should go to Shillong. But my sister insisted that we see Darjeeling. My father decided that we would go to both places with one month’s stay at each place.
So, it was decided that we would be going first to Shillong and then to Darjeeling. We left the New Delhi Railway Station four days after the vacation began. It was a very long and tiring journey. The train reached Guwahati in the evening.
The next day, early in the morning we drove to Shillong. We stayed there for nearly a month in the hotel. The climate was no doubt cool and pleasant, but there were very few places of interest.
We left Shillong on June 4th. On our way to Darjeeling, we traveled by train. We saw thick forests and beautiful tea gardens. We reached Darjeeling at about noon. We took a taxi and went to a hotel where reservations had been earlier arranged by my father. One day we went to the Tiger Hills by taxi at 4 a.m. to enjoy the famous sunrise. It was a wonderful sight which we had never seen before. And that was the last day of our vacation.

Every winter season, I feel a rush of emotions and memories flood back as I look at the old scarf my mother used to wear. It was a simple woolen scarf, frayed at the edges and a bit faded in color, but to me, it held a world of meaning.
My mother was a hardworking woman. She would wake up before the crack of dawn to prepare breakfast for the family, then rush off to her job at the local factory. Despite the long hours and tiring work, she always managed to come home with a smile on her face, ready to listen to our stories and help us with our homework. I remember how she would wrap that scarf around her neck on cold mornings, as if it were a shield against the harsh elements.
One Christmas, I decided to save up my pocket money to buy her a new scarf. I spent hours in the store, carefully choosing one that I thought would match her eyes and bring out the warmth in her smile. When I finally presented it to her, her eyes lit up like stars. She immediately put it on and proudly showed it off to my father and siblings, as if it were the most precious gift she had ever received. But even though she had the new scarf, she still kept the old one, saying that it held too many memories to let go.
As the years passed, the scarf became a symbol of our bond. Whenever I saw it, I would think of the countless times my mother had comforted me with a hug when I was sad, or cheered me on when I was facing a challenge. She was my constant support, my rock in the stormy sea of life. Friends would come and go, but my mother was always there, ready to offer a kind word or a shoulder to cry on.
Now, I am a father with two kids. Whenever the winter winds blow, I take out that old scarf and hold it close to my heart. It reminds me of my mother's love, unwavering and unconditional. And I realize that the best gifts in life are not the ones that are bought with money, but the ones that are wrapped in love and memories. Just like my mother's scarf, which may be worn out and old, but to me, it is a treasure that I will cherish forever.
24.How did the author surprise his mom at Christmas?
A.By saving his pocket money. B.By helping with household chores.
C.By taking her on a trip. D.By giving her a new scarf.
25.What does the underlined word “frayed” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Torn. B.Decorated. C.Colorful. D.Soft.
26.What can we infer about the author's mother?
A.She lives an economical life. B.She values family and memories.
C.She doesn't like new things. D.She is strict with her children.
27.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The author's happy childhood.
B.The author's memories of his mother's scarf.
C.The relationship between the author and his mother.
D.The importance of buying proper gifts for parents.
【答案】24.D 25.A 26.B 27.B
根据文章第三段“One Christmas, I decided to save up my pocket money to buy her a new scarf. I spent hours in the store, carefully choosing one that I thought would match her eyes and bring out the warmth in her smile. When I finally presented it to her, her eyes lit up like stars.(有一年圣诞节,我决定攒零花钱给她买一条新围巾。我在店里花了好几个小时,仔细挑选了一件我认为能和她的眼睛相配的衣服,能衬托出她微笑中的温暖。当我最后把它交给她时,她的眼睛像星星一样亮了起来)”可知,作者通过买了一条新围巾给妈妈一个惊喜。故选D。
25.词句猜测题。根据第一段中“Every winter season, I feel a rush of emotions and memories flood back as I look at the old scarf my mother used to wear. It was a simple woolen scarf, frayed at the edges and a bit faded in color.(每年冬天,当我看到妈妈曾经戴过的那条旧围巾时,我的感情就会涌起,回忆就会涌上心头。它是一条简单的羊毛围巾,边缘frayed,颜色也有些褪色了)”可知,颜色也有些褪色了,所以边缘有些破损。所以“frayed”指的是边缘“破损的”,选项A中的“Torn”意为“破损的”,恰与语境吻合。故选A。
根据文章第三段中“But even though she had the new scarf, she still kept the old one, saying that it held too many memories to let go.(但是,即使她有了新的围巾,她仍然保留了旧的,因为她说它承载了太多的回忆无法割舍)”可推知,作者的母亲非常珍视家庭和回忆。故选B。
根据最后一段“Now, I am a father with two kids. Whenever the winter winds blow, I take out that old scarf and hold it close to my heart. It reminds me of my mother's love, unwavering and unconditional. And I realize that the best gifts in life are not the ones that are bought with money, but the ones that are wrapped in love and memories. Just like my mother's scarf, which may be worn out and old, but to me, it is a treasure that I will cherish forever.(现在,我是两个孩子的父亲。
C
I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it.
28.What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A.His good grades got him a good job. B.He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C.His views on social values are well known. D.He is content with his academic achievements.
29.Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship?
A.A helper. B.A judge. C.A monitor. D.A supporter.
30.What is the greatest accomplishment for the author?
A.The contribution to volunteering. B.The success in exams.
C.The recovery of confidence in life. D.The work in community service.
31.What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean?
A.To depend on. B.To think carefully and deeply about.
C.To pay attention to. D.To have a check on.
【答案】28.D 29.A 30.A 31.B
根据第一段中“I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.(我喜欢学习,在我的课上一直拿A。有一年,我在期末考试中获得了全班第一名。这是一项伟大的成就)”可推知,作者对自己的学习成绩很满意。故选D。
29.推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad.(另一件让我高兴的事是我设法改善了爸爸妈妈之间的关系)”可推知,作者在父母的关系中扮演了一个帮手的角色。故选A。
根据第三段中的“My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home.(然而,我最骄傲的成就是我在当地老人院的成功工作)”可知,对志愿工作的贡献是作者最大的成就。故选A。
根据划线词后文“I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future(我特别为我在敬老院的服务感到自豪,所以我希望在大学学习社会工作,将来成为一名社会工作者)”可知,作者在反思自己的成就,并且为自己在敬老院服务感到自豪,故划线词意思是“仔细而深刻地思考”。故选B。

How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra or enjoy working out number puzzles. Maths is all around us, from working out how to split the bill after a meal to calculating your household bills. But many dread the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures, and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem depressing, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’ re definitely not alone.
Research traces maths anxiety back to school experiences. Nervous teachers may unintentionally pass their fears to students, and girls are particularly vulnerable. Data from 34 countries reveals striking numbers: 31% of teens feel nervous about solving problems, 33% stress over homework, and nearly 60% fear difficult classes. Shulamit Kahn, a Boston University expert, argues that positive role models — especially female teachers — are critical to building confidence in young learners.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says, “It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s only one correct answer — there’ s no room for bluffing — might make you more worried about underperforming.” And once we suppose we’re not a “maths person”, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.
Psychologists have been trying to work out why maths can bring us out in a sweat. That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can loosen their hold on you and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. In fact, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
32.What does NOT lead to students’ maths anxiety?
A.Nervous teachers. B.Homework stress. C.Complex classes. D.Frequent tests.
33.What does “no room for bluffing” mean about maths problems?
A.They require creative thinking.
B.They can be understood flexibly.
C.They demand exact answers.
D.They involve various maths steps.
34.How do psychologists advise reducing maths anxiety?
A.Ignore it and move on to harder problems.
B.Adjust exams to lower stress for students.
C.Voice your worries and try again.
D.Replace daily maths with puzzle games.
35.What is the best title of the passage?
A.How Do We Learn Maths Effectively?
B.Is Maths Worth Learning?
C.Are Boys Better at Maths than Girls?
D.Should We Fear Maths?
根据第二段中“Nervous teachers may unintentionally pass their fears to students, and girls are particularly vulnerable. Data from 34 countries reveals striking numbers: 31% of teens feel nervous about solving problems, 33% stress over homework, and nearly 60% fear difficult classes.(紧张的老师可能会无意中把他们的恐惧传递给学生,女孩尤其容易受到影响。来自34个国家的数据显示,31%的青少年对解决问题感到紧张,33%对家庭作业感到压力,近60%害怕困难的课程)”可知,导致学生数学焦虑的原因有紧张的老师、作业压力和复杂的课程,没有提到频繁的测试。故选D。
33.词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s only one correct answer(不清楚为什么与地理相比,数学会引起如此多的恐惧,但事实上数学只有一个正确答案)”以及下文“might make you more worried about underperforming(可能会让你更担心表现不佳)”可知,数学只有一个正确答案,需要精确答案,由此推知“no room for bluffing”意为“无法模糊回答,它们需要精确的答案”,强调答案的唯一性。故选C。
根据最后一段中“That seed of fear may come from many sources, but some suggest that expressing your fears can loosen their hold on you and encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. In fact, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.(这种恐惧的种子可能来自许多来源,但一些人建议,表达你的恐惧可以减轻它们对你的控制,并鼓励孩子们把数学测试视为一种挑战,而不是一种威胁。事实上,我们需要对数学保持积极的态度,并给它第二次机会)”可知,心理学家建议说出你的担忧,再试一次,以此来减少数学焦虑。故选C。
35.主旨大意题。根据第一段“How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra or enjoy working out number puzzles. Maths is all around us, from working out how to split the bill after a meal to calculating your household bills. But many dread the moment when they have to deal with numbers and figures, and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem depressing, but this “maths anxiety” is perfectly normal, and you’ re definitely not alone.(你的数学怎么样? 故D选项“Should We Fear Maths?(我们应该害怕数学吗?)”

The Most Touching Thing
After I did badly in my first monthly exam last month, I felt depressed and disappointed. On learning this, my father asked me to have a face-to-face talk with him. First of all, he told me to analyze the causes one by one warm-heartedly instead of scolding me seriously as usual. In addition, he made me feel confident again by pointing out the advantages of me.
From that day on, whenever and wherever I meet difficulties, I always recall my father’s words, so I can overcome them however hard they are.
The bell rang. I grabbed my backpack and headed to the library for my favorite after-school activity: Writing Club.
“Today we will share our stories with a critique (评论) partner. It means to give helpful feedback so someone can tell their best story,” said Miss Lisa, our writing teacher.
My partner was Penny. I handed my story to her, nervous. I had no problem coming up with great story ideas, but I did struggle with spelling and grammar. Penny didn’t look at me or smile as she pushed her story across the table toward me. Why was she worried? She always got perfect scores on her spelling and grammar tests.
I read her story. It was about a dog named Sunny saving a family from a flood.
“Wow, great story,” I told her. “I don’t have any suggestions. It’s perfect!”
“Yours too,” she whispered. She didn’t even look at me as she passed mine back.
When the club ended, Penny rushed out, dropping a book in haste. I picked it up: Sunny the Brave. My heart sank as the plot matched her story exactly. She hadn’t written it — she had copied it. It wasn’t fair. I thought about telling Miss Lisa, but Miss Lisa had already left.
Outside of the school, I spotted Penny sitting on a bench, crying. Instead of accusing her, I simply handed her the book. Seeing her tears, I remembered my job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback. But what should I say?
I kept thinking about Penny and her story. When I got home, I found Mom in the kitchen making dinner with Dad. Dad chopped (切割) vegetables carefully, while Mom added spices (调料) freely. Their dinners turned out delicious. Mom and Dad had different skills, each using their strengths, making them a great team. That gave me an idea to suggest to Penny.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
The next morning, I found Penny outside the classroom.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Penny’s eyes widened with hope.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, I found Penny outside the classroom. Her eyes were swollen, and she froze when I approached. “I... I need to explain,” she stammered, clutching her notebook. “I panicked about creating an original story. When I saw Sunny the Brave, I thought copying was the only way to impress everyone. I just couldn’t come up with ideas.” Her voice shook. I nodded, recalling Mom’s messy spice experiments and Dad’s careful measuring. “You don’t need to copy,” I said gently. “Look, I’m great at coming up with ideas, but you’re amazing at grammar and spelling. We have different strengths. What if we worked on a story together?”
Penny’s eyes widened with hope. She smiled and agreed eagerly. We spent lunchtime brainstorming. She organized sentences while I crafted the plot. By Friday, we presented our story to Miss Lisa. “Remarkable teamwork!” she exclaimed. “The creative ideas and polished writing balance each other perfectly.” Penny smiled at me, and I realized this was what critique truly meant — not just correcting mistakes, but mixing strengths to create magic. As we high-fived, I thought of Dad’s measuring spoons and Mom’s bold spices. Together, we’d made something far better than perfection.

D

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
