According to Gelb, although not everyone is born with the gifts and the capacities of Leonardo
Da Vinci,it is possible for any person to use the fundamentals of Da Vinci's approach to learning to
guide us toward the realization of our inner Da Vinci. One typical fundamental is curiosity.Curiosity
is "The desire to know is natural to good men."-Leonardo Da Vinci
The young Leonardo loved being in nature, showed an early gift for drawing and was fascinated
by mathematics.Young Leonardo's Curiosity regarding education and mathematics especially often
raised constant unsureness and difficulties for the teachers who taught him and continuously proved
them to be wrong. Most children have in them endless amounts of curiosity and sense of wonder
Unfortunately for multiple reasons these qualities are lost as children reach adulthood, not Leonardo
though.Perhaps one of his greatest characteristics was his willingness to question accepted
knowledge.Leonardo's Curiosity never faded and fueled the lake of his genius for his entire life.
Leonardo's motives were not money, women or loyalty to any church or person. His pursuits were
pure:the long search for beauty and above all:truth.
Leonardo would wonder around asking questions he did not himself yet understand. He always
carried a notebook with himself so that he could quickly write down hundreds of questions, ideas,
thoughts, impressions and observations as they occurred. He was expectant and reliant only upon
himself to answer his own questions.Being modest,he was not afraid to make mistakes and appear
foolish.Leonardo accepted the feelings of unfamiliarity and foolishness.
His questions led him to designing a snorkel(水下呼吸器)as well as diving equipment and
even a submarine and also inventing fiying machines and a parachute().His curiosity took
him under the water and into the sky.

A.It fooled himself.
B.It made him independent.
C.It inspired his whole life
D.It disappeared in his adulthood.
7.Which saying can best reflect Leonardo Da Vinci?
A.An idle youth,a needy age.
B.First come,first served.
C.Stay hungry,stay foolish
D.Nothing ventured,nothing gained.

City parks have long been a place for urban esidents to get a small amount of green. As cities
increasingly feel the impacts of rising scas and temperatures, people are rethinking the roles of urban
parks.
All of the dark-gray asphalt (in cities collect heat.Dallas is one of the country's
fastest-warming cities thanks in part to its extensive impervious()surfaces,but with a new
$312 million bond (package, the city is hoping to change that.Using satellite data, the city is
able to see what neighborhoods most need the cooling effect of green spaces.
Cities are increasingly flooding and city planners think parks can help with this issue too.A
report published in February by The Nature Conservancy looked at the best ways to deal with
flooding in Houston,a city with many neighborhoods built on floodplains and regularly flooded by
rising waters.Offering affected homeowners buyouts()and transforming homes into green
spaces would save more money than installing infrastructure(基础设施)like pipes,,they found.
Brendan Shane,a climate program director, says parks can create opportunities for people to
exercise and play,in addition to cooling neighborhoods and absorbing floodwater."The stronger the
bonds are from neighbor to neighbor, the better they are able to react to a shock,"he says.
"Not a single solution by itself will avoid the climate crisis. We see parks as an important part of
it,but there isn't a silver bullet,"says Diane Regas,CEO of The Trust for Public Land."Parks are an
example of what we in the environmental community need to do to reach solutions that address
climate change at the same time and make people's lives better."

D.City parks affect people's choice of a neighborhood.
10.What does Brendan Shane say about parks?
A.They can enable people to get over a shock.B.They can reduce air pollution effectively.
C.They can perform positive social functions.D.They can help people to keep a cool head.
11.What does the underlined phrase"a sliver bullet"in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.A fast and effective solution.

The wallet is heading for extinction. As a day-to-day essential,it will die off with the generation
who read print newspapers. The kind of shopping-where you hand over notes and count out
change in return一now happens only in the most minor of our retail(零售的)encounters, like
buying a bar of chocolate or a bottle of milk, from a corner shop.At the shops where you spend any
real money, that money is increasingly abstracted. And this is more and more true, the higher up the
scale you go.At the most cutting-edge retail store-Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, for instance
-you don't go and stand at any kind of cash rcgistcr.Whcn you decide to pay,the staff are
equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa, which is nothing more or less
than excellent service,if you have the money.
But across society, the abstraction of the idea of cash makes me uneasy.Maybe I'm just
old-fashioned.But earning money isn't quick or easy for most of us.Isn't it a bit weird(that
spending it should happen in half a blink of an eye?Doesn't a wallet-that time-honoured
Friday-night feeling of pleasing, promising fatness-represent something that maters?
But I'll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the
change it represents in our physical environment.Everything about the look and feel of a wallet-
the way the fastenings and materials wear and tear and loosen with age,the plastic and paper and
gold and silver, and handwritten phone numbers and printed cinema tickets-is the very opposite of
what our world is becoming. The opposite of a wallet is a smart phone or an iPad.The rounded edges,
cool glass, smooth and unknowable as a pebble().Instead of digging through pieces of paper
and peering()into corners,we move our fingers left and right. No more counting out coins.
Show your wallet,if you still have one.It may not be here much longer.
12.What does the author intended to show with the example of buying chocolate and milk?
A.Goods like chocolate and milk should be sold only in corner shops.
B.Now people seldom use cash unless making small purchases.
C.People won't bother to buy daily groceries with cash
D.The new generation no longer needs wallet.
13.What makes the author feel uncomfortable nowadays?
A.Spending money is so fast and easy.
B.Saving money is no longer necessary.
C.The pleasing Friday-night feeling is fading.D.Earning money is getting more difficult.
14.What can we infer from the passage about the author?
A.He is resistant to social changes.
B.He is against technological progress.
C.He feels unwilling to part with the traditional wallet.
D.He feels insecure in the ever changing modern world.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.Wallet:A Thing of the Past
B.Changes in Payment Trends
C.Cash No Longer Useful
D.Age of Wallet Coming to an End

What motivates you to work or study harder? Is it the thought of 21 and all the amazing
things that you can achieve,or is it the fear of failure and 22all the things that can go wrong
for you?Teachers have often used one of these ideas to 23 students to work harder and 24
more. But is one better than the other?
A recent study looked at the 25 of fear-based strategies on British secondary school
students. As is so often the case,it's26.They found that if a test is seen as important, and
students are 27 that they can succeed, then the fear of failure can be used successfully by
teachers to 28 these learners. However,if students are not 29,then fear-based
approaches could trigger feelings of30,which can in turn lead them to do worse on the 31
than they would have done otherwise. The study also found that if students are 32 and don't care
about the test in the first place,then,33,the fear of failure is not likely to motivate them.
