Passage 1
What did people from the New Stone Age look like? For a long time, nobody knew. But modern technologies have now shown us the faces of two men from that time.
Last month, a group of Chinese researchers released the portraits (肖像) of these two men. They were based on their skulls (颅骨). People discovered these head bones at the Yangshao Village site in Henan Province.
The researchers believe the two men both lived near the Yellow River. One man likely lived around 5,600 years ago, during the Yangshao culture. He was about 40 years old when he died. The other was around 50. He might have lived about 4,000 years ago. This was the Longshan culture period.
At present, there are no written records of these ancient people. The researchers collected lots of data from the skulls. They used the data to create 3D models of the men’s faces. Then, they studied populations with the closest genetic (基因的) background. This helped them to rebuild the muscles. Genetic studies also showed other features of the two men. These include their skin color and what their hair was like.

Passage 2
Sugar painting, as the name suggests, is a painting made of sugar. It’s sugar for us to taste, and a painting for us to admire.
In the Warring States Period (战国时期), the ancient people loved sweets and developed ways of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, the technology of making sugar improved. And sugar went into common people’s homes. With the cultural and economic development of the Song and Yuan dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sugar. Then, in the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck to the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
Sugar painting is different from common painting. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material, a spoon as the“paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the“paper”. To make syrup, they have to heat the sugar before painting. Because syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
However, it’s a pity that the art of sugar painting is dying recently. In the past, sugar paintings came in different shapes. But now, because fewer people buy them, their styles are becoming simpler and simpler. What’s worse, few people want to pass on the art except those old sugar painters.
For most people, the art of painting is difficult to understand. However, sugar painting brings the art into people’s daily lives. It shows the spiritual pursuit (精神追求) of the ancient people. And it is a part of China’s intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产). So, the art should be remembered, cherished and passed on.

Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons into soft and strong cloth. This magic cloth became known as “silk”, and it was so valuable that it was called “China’s Gold”. Following the kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
But then, something amazing happened! During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian traveled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name—the Silk Road.

“The project lets us know the faces of our ancestors,” said one of the researchers. “It also helps us learn something about the rich cultures of ancient society.”
1.Where were the head bones of the two men discovered?
2.When did the man from the Yangshao culture likely live?
3.How did the researchers rebuild the muscles of the two men’s faces?
4.What can we learn from this project according to the passage? Write 30 words or more.

The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across the mountains. From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices (香料), gold and silver from the west. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade and gradually it came to cover many other areas. For example, Chinese inventions like papermaking were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.

A report about recent fashion trends noted that Neo-Chinese fashion has mainly become popular among 18-to-34-year-olds, while 40 percent of the customer group are women aged 24—34 years old. They are without doubt the most important players shaping the Chinese fashion industry. Also, they are accepting different kinds of styles, including the Neo-Chinese style.
Neo-Chinese clothing is one of the most popular fields among younger generations, who prefer clothing that connect traditional Chinese elements with daily wear. This has encouraged Chinese designers to use more traditional ornaments (饰物). Compared with traditional hanfu or Tang jackets, Neo-Chinese dresses exchange a sense of ceremony for a more simple and convenient feel.
“Neo-Chinese fashion interests young customers because it shows who they are through dress-up. It is a way to send a message, speaking of their mind about culture,” Fang Qiongyi, a cultural sociologist in Shanghai said.
