Passage 1
(2026·湖南长沙·三模)It was the day Yollie got her graduation certificate of Baylor College of Medicine. Her dream finally came true. She took out an old greyish dress from her suitcase, her mind flooded by memories of the days when her mother saved money for her education.
Yollie’s mother, Mrs Moreno, was a woman with a unique sense of humor. As a single mother, she supported the family by working at the local market. She didn’t earn much money, but she was always positive and had her own way to provide for Yollie and at the same time saved as much money as possible. Her ways were not always clever ones, though, among which an embarrassing one stood out in Yollie’s memory.
Yollie was a smart kid at Saint Theresa’s High School. She was the winner of the school’s spelling bees. Mrs Moreno encouraged her daughter to study hard, hoping Yollie would realize her dream of becoming a doctor one day. She provided Yollie with a desk, typewriter, and a lamp to protect her eyes from long hours of studying.
One day, Yollie needed a new black outfit for the eighth-grade fall dance, but unluckily, their old car had already cost them nearly a hundred dollars in repairs. Mrs Moreno didn’t have much to spend on the outfit so she decided to buy Yollie a pair of black shoes and fabric dye(染料) to turn her white summer dress black.
At first Yollie doubted her mother’s idea. However, to her surprise, the dress turned out shiny and sophisticated(精致的) after being dyed. She was excited to go to the dance. The dance was romantic, with paper lanterns swinging in the trees and creating a scene straight out of a movie. Yollie enjoyed dancing with her friends under the lanterns until rain began to fall. Disaster struck when Yollie’s dyed dress started to leak black dye, ruining her outfit. In embarrassment, she ran home through the storm.

Passage 2
(2026·湖南长沙·三模)Almost all of my holidays were spent with my grandpa. My grandpa was a retired army officer and the years in the army had made him a very tough person, which helped him a lot in fighting with cancer for a long time. Silver and golden stars on his shoulders and medals on his chest in grandma’s old photo albums reflected the marks of his distinguished service and numerous adventures. Grandpa had fine qualities and was a real personality. He was strict with his family, me included, as well as himself.
In our ancestral house there was a big pond as was common in bygone Bengali homes with lots of trees and bushes. Both my grandparents were fond of our so-called garden. One morning our new neighbor saw my grandpa planting two trees on both sides of our main gate, which still stand tall today. Across the street our new neighbor also got the same kind of tree and planted the trees exactly on both sides of his gate too.
My grandpa didn’t often give enough amount of water to his plants and didn’t always give his full attention to them, while our neighbor gave a lot of water to his plants and looked after them too well. My grandpa’s plants were simple but looked good. But our neighbor’s plants were much fuller and greener.
Normally, during April and May, we have short but violent thunderstorms called “Kalboishakhi”. One late evening during a Kalboishakhi we had showers with strong winds, which continued right throughout that night. Next morning along with my grandparents I came out to inspect the damage to our garden. I saw our neighbor was there in his garden too, but looked upset as his plants were uprooted. But, our plants were not damaged and were standing firm on the ground.

Passage 3
(2026·浙江宁波·模拟预测)My father works as a taxi driver. Every single day, he drives along the busy urban streets, picking up and dropping off various passengers. The job is tiring and barely well-paid, yet he never utters a single complaint. Instead, he always returns home with a weary smile and small jokes to brighten up the whole family. “A passenger tipped me with a half-eaten apple today!” he would joke, bringing laughter to my mother and me.
Back in fifth grade, I handmade a sunflower keychain for him. It looked rough with faded paint. Nevertheless, Father cherished it deeply. He fastened it to his waist belt and took it wherever he went. As years rolled by, the keychain grew worn and nearly lost all its color, yet it still hung on his belt, swaying gently with every step he took.
Currently a high schooler, I am constantly buried in piles of homework and exams. Last week, I suffered a terrible failure in my math exam, leaving me feeling extremely defeated. Upon arriving home, I threw my schoolbag aside and sank into silence. Father instantly spotted my low spirits and asked softly what had happened. Refusing to reply, I felt annoyed at his repeated comfort offers. The accumulated frustration and embarrassment finally exploded. “Leave me alone!” I shouted rudely at him.
My harsh words hung awkwardly in the room. Father froze on the spot, his smile fading away completely. For a brief moment, he stared at me in shock and hurt, confused by my sudden outburst. Without any explanation, he turned around and walked slowly to his bedroom. The soft click of the closing door stung my heart far more fiercely than a loud slam.
That night, I tossed and turned in bed, consumed by great guilt. I quietly stepped out of my room and walked to the living room. There lay his belt on the sofa, with the faded sunflower keychain resting on it, silently reminding me of my foolishness.

Passage 4
(2026·陕西·三模)It had been some time since Jack last saw Mr. Belser. College, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son.
Over the phone, his mother told him, “Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.” Memories flashed through his mind like an old news film as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. “Jack, did you hear me?” “Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It’s been so long since I thought of the old man. I’m sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,” Jack said.
“Well, he didn’t forget you. He’d often ask about you and reminisce about the days you spent together.” Mom told him. “I loved that old house he lived in,” Jack said. “After your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man’s influence in your life,” she said. “He’s the one who taught me carpentry,” Jack said. “I wouldn’t be in the business if it weren’t for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important.” Once, when I rushed through a birdhouse to play, he said, “Jack, good work takes time, and good company is worth every minute.” “Mom, I’ll be there for the funeral,” he added.
Busy as he was, he kept his word. After the funeral, the night before returning home, Jack and his mom stopped by to see Mr. Belser’s house one more time. Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house remained unchanged. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture...Jack stopped suddenly. “The box is gone,” he said. There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he’d ever tell me was “the thing I value most.”

Passage 5
(2026·河北秦皇岛·一模)In a small town lived a teenage girl named Lily. She was cheerful and loved making new friends and trying new things, but she seldom turned to others for help. Lately she felt sad and lost as she was stuck in a difficult situation.
Lily had arranged to go to a concert with her best friend, Sarah, on Saturday evening. However, that morning her cousins visited, and they spent a noisy, tiring day together. Because of the busy day, Lily did not hear her phone and missed her concert appointment. The next day, when Lily met Sarah, she was excited to share the story of her cousins’ visit. But Sarah became angry and walked away. Even when Lily tried to explain, Sarah did not respond and started avoiding her at school.
One day, Lily noticed a flyer(传单) for a youth group meeting at the local community center. Although she was curious about meeting new people, she also felt a little scared of the unknown. After a brief pause, she decided to join the meeting, hoping it might help her feel better.
At the community center, a group of friendly teenagers welcomed her. David, the group leader, greeted her warmly and introduced her to everyone. They played games, talked about their interests, and shared their problems. As the meeting went on, Lily realized she was not alone in her struggles. The group discussed how challenging it could be to manage school work, friendships, and family expectations.
Lily had kept her feelings inside ever since her argument with Sarah, thinking she was the only one experiencing such difficulties. Now, surrounded by others who understood, she felt more hopeful. When it was her turn to speak, she opened up about her feelings. As she shared her emotions, Lily felt a great sense of relief.

Passage 6
(2026·河北秦皇岛·二模)
A Dollar on the Conscience (良心)
“A dollar per pound, right?” The woman was already opening her wallet. Actually, the price was eighty-five cents per pound, and that’s what Mark, the grocery store clerk, had told her. But she’d misunderstood.
Mark had a solid reputation in the community. People knew him as an honest guy, a straight shooter. And he liked that. He liked it a lot. It gave him a sense of pride, knowing that people saw him as a good person.
“But what if I just let this one slide?” he thought as soon as she said “a dollar per pound”. It’s just fifteen cents. What’s the harm in that? As the woman loaded up on apples, he hesitated. His conscience was nagging(纠缠) at him, reminding him that it wasn’t right. “Don’t do it, Mark,” he told himself. “It’s not worth it.” But the words wouldn’t come out. Instead, he silently bagged the apples and placed them on the scale(秤).
“Not too bad for the price,” the woman remarked, smiling as she handed him a ten dollar bill. “No, not bad at all,” Mark replied, his hand moving almost on autopilot(机械地) as he counted out the change.
“Why didn’t I just correct her?” he scolded himself, feeling a pit in his stomach. He knew he was doing something wrong, but for some reason, he just couldn’t stop himself. The extra dollar felt heavier in his pocket than any coin he’d ever handled.
“Can you have them delivered to 200 Maple Street?” she asked, giving him another polite smile. Mark nodded, still unable to find his voice. He watched her leave, the doorbell ringing as she stepped out onto the sidewalk.
“Tell her, tell her there was a mistake,” his mind screamed. “Just run after her and give it back. She’ll understand.” But the words got stuck in his throat. Instead, he watched her walk away, disappearing into the city’s hustle and bustle.
It’s funny how something so small-a single dollar-can mess with your head.

Passage 1
(2026·湖北十堰·模拟预测)I was sitting next to Missy when Mrs. Bartlett announced a group project: creating a newspaper about the culture we were studying. We listed three friends we wanted to work with. Missy and I exchanged confident smiles — we’d chosen each other. Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would consider our choice and would let us know the results the next day.
The next morning, when the bell finally rang, I slid into my seat beside Missy. Mrs. Bartlett began reading group lists. Group One, Group Two — then Group Three. Missy’s name was called. Good, I thought, I’m in Group Three. But as she read the remaining names, mine never came. My stomach tightened.
Then I heard the last group: “Karina, Mauro, Juliette, Rachel.” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group: the boy who never did his homework, the one girl who always sat in the back and refused to speak, and the other girl who was always late for class?
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. “Why?” I whispered.
She rested a gentle hand on my shoulder. “Well, Karina,” she said, “I need you to help your group get a passing grade on this assignment. Only you can help them.”
Her words struck me like a physical blow. All this time, I’d seen myself as someone who needed the right group — but she saw me as someone who could lead one.
“Will you help them?” she asked.
I stood straighter. “Yes,” I heard myself say, surprising even myself.
I bravely walked to where the others in my group sat, and we started awkwardly. But as we divided tasks — Mauro on finding pictures, Juliette on writing short articles, Rachel on designing the layout (布局) — something changed. The awkwardness faded into cooperation.

Passage 2
(2026·湖南长沙·三模)I fell in love with Katrina right away. She was new to our school, but she didn’t seem shy or nervous. She smiled at everyone, even on the first day of class. Unluckily, we only got to enjoy that smile for the first three days of school. Our teacher told us that Katrina had cancer(癌症) and would be in the hospital.
Some of my friends in my class and I decided to go to see her in the hospital. She had just moved to a new town and didn’t even get a chance to make friends with anyone yet. We wanted to keep her company. That was how we came to know Katrina and how much fun she really was.
It was awkward at first because we didn’t know what to talk about, but when she started telling us about her hospital adventures, we were all laughing. And before we knew it, we had been there for almost three hours. She told us about the kid in the room next to her who would get up and pull the fire alarm for absolutely no reason. And sure enough, while we were sitting with her, the fire alarm went off. We all laughed when nobody feared and escaped. And she told us how much she missed her little animals: a rabbit, a bird, cats, dogs, etc. Later, her mom told us that her favorite thing was to go to the Humane Society and adopt(收养) the poorest animal. She always managed to take it home and make it beautiful.
After that day, we continued visiting her. We could see she was hopeful that she would eventually recover. However, during one of our visits, she learned from doctors that she only had a 50% chance to recover. She was quite scared, crying, “I don’t want to die.” And we heard her family was having economic problems and that her single mom was having little time to help take care of her animals. Suddenly, she felt her world became dark; she grew anxious and helpless.
We told her we were there to fight with her. We wouldn’t let her go.

Passage 3
(2026·浙江宁波·模拟预测)Adam loved football. He loved the smell of the grass as he slid across it. And he loved the excitement when he shot the ball into the net. There was nothing in this world that could weigh the same as football in his heart. He dreamed of growing up to be a professional footballer.
Every day Adam would go to the field and practise with his friends. He still remembered when he asked to join the older boys, they teased(取笑) him, “You’re too small. Football is for big, tough players, not for someone your size.” Then when they saw he could run, kick, and shoot as well as they could, the teasing stopped. Adam played hard and really had a gift. He even became the only one in the group who could do the bicycle kick(倒挂金钩)!
One day after school, Adam went to the playground to practise as usual. The boys were talking quietly, casting excited glances at a man who was watching the field. As Adam joined the group, Captain Harold told him the man, called Mr. Smith, was looking for players for his football camp and there would be a tryout match the next day. Adam could hardly contain his excitement. The camp meant there would be professional coaches to train him! He would do anything to join it.
After the practice, Mr. Smith approached and Adam crowded close so he could see him. “Who wants to come to my football camp and really learn to play this game?” Mr. Smith asked. Excited hands shot up. Mr. Smith shook them all and shook Adam’s hand last.
“Little man, I saw you run fast,” he said. “But you are far too thin and short for my camp. You’ll get knocked down in a second.”
Adam looked down so no one would see his disappointment. “It’s not fair! Adam’s been practising with us and he’s the only one who ever did the bicycle kick!” Harold argued.

Passage 4
(2026·福建福州·三模)Ms Hart stood in front of her class on the very first day of school and told the children a lie. Like most teachers, she looked at her students, saying that she loved them all the same, treating them all alike. And that was impossible because there in front of her, right on the third row, was a little boy named George.
Ms Hart had watched George the year before and noticed he was seldom engaged in school games, that he always wore torn dusty clothes and that he constantly needed a bath. As a whole, George was unpleasant.
When Ms Hart was required to review each child’s records, she put George’s off until last. But his file turned out a surprise. His first-grade teacher wrote, “George is a bright child with a ready laugh. He is a joy to be around.”
Another teacher wrote, “George is an excellent student well-liked by his classmates, but he is troubled because his mother has a serious illness and life at home must be a struggle.” The next wrote. “George continues to work hard but his mother’s death has been hard on him. Since his father doesn’t show much interest, his home life will soon affect him if some steps aren’t taken.”
The last record wrote, “George is silent and doesn’t show much interest in school. He doesn’t have many friends and sometimes sleeps in class. He could become a problem.”
By then Ms Hart realized the problem and Christmas was coming fast.

Passage 5
(2026·浙江宁波·三模)Every afternoon, thirteen-year-old Ethan stopped outside Green’s Music House, drawn to an old violin in the window. Though his family couldn’t afford lessons, Ethan loved music. After performing a solo at his school concert, he dreamed of playing on a bigger stage.
One rainy day, he stepped inside. The owner, Mr. Green, noticed him looking at the violin. He pointed to a photograph of a teenage girl holding the same violin on stage. Beside it hung a poster for “Community Music Night 1998.” At the top of the performers’ list was Anna Wilson.
Mr. Green explained that Community Music Night was the town’s most important music event. Anna had been his student - a talented violinist accepted into a famous conservatory(音乐学院) and chosen to perform the closing piece. But weeks before the concert, her father fell seriously ill. Anna gave up her place to support her family. She practiced for nearly a year but never got to play.
Before leaving town, she gave Mr. Green her violin and a sealed envelope. “Give this violin to a young person who truly loves music,” she said. “Don’t open the envelope unless you find that person.”
Over the next two months, Ethan helped in the store every day. Impressed by his dedication and musical ability, Mr. Green finally handed him the violin.
That evening, Ethan opened the case and found the envelope. Inside were a letter and a sheet of music. At the top of the music sheet was a handwritten note: “The piece I never had the chance to play.”

Passage 6
(2026·广西·模拟预测)
A Teacher’s Dream
When handball was introduced to Sri Lankan schools in 2010,I wanted to bring it to my school, St Anthony’s, in the remote village of Wasalakotte in central Sri Lanka. This became a challenging task as the sports teacher was unwilling to initiate anything other than traditional sports, such as cricket, rugby and basketball.
I was not a sports teacher and I had never played handball before. In fact, I was an English language teacher before assuming my post as vice principal. However, I was determined to start this game at any cost. Handball is a fascinating game which combines speed, strength, flexibility, technical precision, skill and teamwork. As a new sport, I foresaw it as a golden opportunity for our school as we had never secured a place in traditional sports.
The boys were immediately interested and 40 students aged between 13 and 19 signed up to play. I had the support of their parents. Ultimately, I managed to convince the sports teacher to agree. However, we still needed a coach.
Heshan Pradeep, a St Anthony’s old boy who graduated some nine years earlier, volunteered to coach the team. He was a member of the Air Force handball team and was happy to take on the role in his free time. He assigned exercises and drills to do in his absence.
Although handball is an indoor game, we trained outdoors as our school had limited facilities. Training started early in the morning before class and continued after school until it was dark. The boys loved the game and were enthusiastic about training.
“This handball craze will ruin your studies!” complained some of the teachers in an attempt to discourage the game. Whenever the boys were late for class after morning practice, they were scolded or punished by their teachers, but I was able to keep them cheerful.
After three months of intense training, we were able to send an under-19s boys’ team to compete with 50 other schools at the first all-island school handball tournament held in Colombo—the country’s richest city.

Passage 7
(2026·浙江绍兴·二模)Looking back, I realize that what once made me feel out of place was actually where I was rooted. But I didn’t realize that when I first walked into the classroom.
“Attention!” Mr. Tide commanded. “I’d like to introduce our new student, Desmond. His family just moved to Chicago from Jamaica(牙买加). Let’s give him a warm welcome.” “Welcome,” the class recited in a chorus that sounded nothing like my pronunciation. To avoid curious eyes, I quickly made my way down the row of desks and sank into my seat.
Mr. Tide took this opportunity to share some facts about Jamaica. Every topic brought back memories. I soon slipped off into daydreams of sitting in class with my friends as the warm breeze wafted in through the windows. In contrast, there was no warmth here. The windows were shut tight against the snow.
“Desmond! Is school in Jamaica different from ours?” Mr. Tide’s voice pulled me back. I stood up, opened my mouth, then closed it. Part of me wanted to speak with Jamaican rhythm. But the other part wanted to flatten the vowels to sound like everyone else. In the end, I spoke carefully, “Everyone wears a school uniform in Jamaica.” I could have told them about the morning gathering, or the mango tree we climbed during breaks. But I chose a safer answer, which didn’t sound too foreign. To my surprise, no one laughed at my accent.
“Did you play sports?” a boy shouted. “I was captain of the school’s cricket(板球) team,” I said proudly and waited for the admiration that usually followed.
Silence. Confused faces. No one knew my favorite game! I reached into my bag and pulled out my cricket bat and ball, hoping to explain — but the bell rang before I could.
At lunch, I sat alone, eating a cheeseburger — a poor substitute for the patty(肉饼) I loved back home. I tried to like it. But with each bite, I missed home more.

Passage 8
(2026·湖北十堰·三模)The first time the lawn(草坪) was mentioned, it was not by the man who owned it. It came up during a neighborhood meeting. People were discussing small issues that had affected the town’s appearance. Then someone pointed down the street and said one yard had become “very unsightly.” A few neighbors nodded. No name was referred to, but everyone knew which house it was. It stood on the corner, small and gray, with grass that had grown tall and uneven. On my way to work, I slowed down. From far away, the lawn looked messy. Up close, it looked different. The grass was thin in places, and weeds had pushed through. The edges were soft, not sharp, as if time had slowly worn them down.
Mr. Harris sat on the chair, his eyes fixed on the yard. When I greeted him, he smiled briefly, and then looked away. “They talk about it, don’t they?” he said quietly. His voice carried no anger. He had already learned what people thought of him and his yard.
I slowly learned the story behind the yard. Mr. Harris lived alone. He had arthritis (关节炎) in his knees, and a heart problem that made it hard for him to breathe. Walking even a short distance left him weak. Now, trying to remove weeds only caused him pain that lasted for days. Still, he refused to ask for help. “I don’ t want pity,” he said. “I just don’t want them to misunderstand.”
A warning notice from the town appeared on his door at the end of the week, urging him to take care of his yard. That was the moment everything changed for me. The yard was no longer a concern. It had become a sign of how easily people could mistake difficulty for laziness, and silence for carelessness. I realized that choosing not to act was also a choice — and it was part of the problem.

Passage 1
(2026·河北秦皇岛·二模)It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl. As I got ready, I could hear icy rain beating the windows. I said a quick prayer for Baby-Girl. She was out there somewhere in the storm; I could just feel it. Sure, it had been six months since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. She’d been my constant comfort for years, and I can’t bring myself to give up on her.
That summer, my sweet kitty had disappeared from my parents’ house in Indiana. Baby-Girl had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in Washington, D. C. I was staying with friends until I signed my rental agreement on a new place. Baby-Girl had got out of my parents’ house three days before I was set to fly back home to pick her up.
My dad and I spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was the family’s resident “realist,” which meant he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her,” he said. I heaved a long sigh. Dad always supported me, but he was so skeptical. He could do with a little more faith!
Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see Baby-Girl again. She’d been a homeless cat when I found her. A tough little tabby(斑猫) survived all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after I returned to Washington, D. C. without her and the weeks stretched into months, deep down I had this feeling that we’d be reunited.
Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, and then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter, hoping she’d been found.

Passage 2
(2026·湖南长沙·三模)One quiet spring day in May 2016, Officer James Givens of the Cincinnati Police Department experienced something so unusual that he would remember it for the rest of his career. The day began like any other as he parked his patrol car in a parking lot, seeking a brief rest from his duties. However, the peace was interrupted by an unexpected visitor.
A wild goose(鹅) walked slowly but surely toward Officer Givens’ car. It looked straight at him, knocked on the car door with its beak again and again, and cried loudly, as if it were trying hard to tell him something. Givens, puzzled by the bird’s unusual behavior, tried offering it some food, but the bird showed no interest. Instead, each time the goose would walk away, it would stop and look back at Givens, as if to say, “Follow me.”
The officer’s curiosity was thoroughly aroused, and he decided to find out what would happen. He stepped out of his car and followed the goose, which led him on a short but significant journey to a grassy area, approximately 100 yards away.
There, the reason for the goose’s urgent call for help became clear: a gosling(幼鹅) was caught in a trap of balloon string, its tiny body struggling helplessly against the tie. A wave of pity washed over Givens when he saw the worried mother and her stuck baby, reminding him of his own duty to protect. However, he hesitated to intervene directly, fearing that without proper training he might injure the baby bird, so he reached for his radio to contact the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Passage 3
(2026·山东威海·模拟预测)
Crab Lessons
My son Geordi was a rather spirited boy. Very little held his attention for long. He spent most of his spare time thinking up new ways to scare me half to death. Like the time he decided to “surf” on a tiny plastic table that was meant to hold a few drinks rather than a six-year-old boy. Geordi had just begun learning about the ocean in school and was surprisingly fascinated by it. We lived in Delaware, so any discussion about the ocean usually included horseshoe crabs, which crowded our coasts to mate in the late spring.
As part of the lesson, Geordi’s teacher brought horseshoe crab shells(壳) to school for the children to touch and examine. Hearing that horseshoe crabs had been around for over 300 million years, even before the dinosaurs, Geordi thought that was officially the coolest thing he had ever heard. He could not stop talking about it for days, and I decided it was time for us to take a drive to the Delaware Bay.
As we stepped out from the car, strong wind nearly blew my poor forty-five-pound child to the ground. Being a six-year-old mischievous(调皮的) boy, Geordi saw this as an opportunity to showcase his amazing talents, which included falling down, getting up, falling down and, yes, getting up again. This, of course, was always complete with giggles(咯咯笑). The drama came to a sudden stop as Geordi spied the dozens of army-truck-looking creatures in the sand. The next sound effect was “Wow!” as his body froze and his eyes widened with wonder.
Geordi ran around excitedly, not knowing which one to check out first. He settled on a horseshoe crab that was on its back, legs waving wildly in the air, desperate for water. “Mom, look at this one!” he screamed. “He’s cool!” I pointed out the different body parts of the crab for him, and he listened quietly and absorbed the information. He said, “I really liked him. I think I will name him Spike because he had all those really cool, spiky(尖的) things on his back.” Then I picked up the crab, turned it over to its proper position and placed it at the edge of the water.

Passage 4
(2026·河南新乡·一模)Jane had a deep affection for birds. Every morning, she scattered(抛撒) seeds in her backyard and whispered, “Good morning, my little friends!” To her, their songs sounded like cheerful laughter, and she often laughed along with them.
However, her neighbor, Mr. Thompson, didn’t share her joy. He was constantly annoyed by the birds that flew into his yard. “They’re too noisy!” he complained. “And they make such a mess in MY yard!” His sharp words made Jane feel quite uneasy, yet she refused to give up on her feathered friends. She firmly believed that every small creature deserved care.
One morning, Jane discovered a small sparrow(麻雀) shaking under the fence. One of its wings looked bent at a painful angle. Filled with worry, Jane carefully picked it up and named it Pip. She placed him in a small, warm basket in a safe corner right next to the fence.
A week passed. Pip was getting better but still unable to fly. One afternoon, while Jane was feeding Pip by the fence, Mr. Thompson shouted from his side, “You’re just asking for trouble!” Jane gently lifted Pip in her hands so Mr. Thompson could see him through the gaps in the fence. “Look, Mr. Thompson. Pip’s wing is hurt.” Mr. Thompson cast an impatient glance at the tiny creature. For a moment, his frown (皱眉) softened. “That wing...” he said softly, almost to himself.
Just then, Jane’s mother called her from the driveway, saying they were leaving for a family visit. Jane waved a quick goodbye to Pip and hurried to the car. However, on their way home, a heavy storm broke out. Watching the trees shaking in the strong wind, Jane felt very worried about Pip, who was left all alone in the yard. The moment they pulled into the driveway, she dashed toward the backyard, calling Pip’s name. 注意:

Passage 5
(2026届山西省平遥中学校高三保温考试最后一卷)I met the Man of the Trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.
Those were difficult times. People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding. Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump did have clean water, we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump wasn’t working, we had to walk five kilometers to the closest stream.
But I was happy. I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived, Dad drove me to Uncle Jita’s house and left. Once he saw me, Uncle Jita announced, “Tomorrow we’re going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera, Amy. You can take photos of what you see.”
The following day, we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off, there was... nothing in front of us. “I don’t want to take pictures of this,” I complained.
Uncle laughed, “Start walking, Amy. I promise you’ll be surprised.” After some time, I could see the outline of a forest in the distance. A little closer, there was a man waving to us.
“That’s Kabir. The forest you see is his. He planted every single tree.” As we walked towards Kabir, Uncle explained that thirty years ago, the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise (天堂).
Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face. "Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some?" he asked. “Of course!” I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees. I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places. All because of the efforts of one man.
Like Uncle said, Kabir’s forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers. During lunchtime, Kabir explained how, by planting trees, it was possible to stop the land from eroding (侵蚀).

Passage 6
(2026届四川内江市高三下学期4月适应性训练)In the quiet residential neighborhood where we lived, in Laval, Canada, lay a small pond, once a lovely corner with clear water and green banks. Far more than an ordinary pond, it was the warm heart of our community and an irreplaceable bond connecting every resident. It served as a joyful playground for children, a peaceful resting spot for the elderly to chat and enjoy the soft wind, and a comfortable place for neighbors to exchange kind words after a busy day. It filled our neighborhood with warmth and vitality(活力), gifting our daily life with simple, sweet joy. This precious shared treasure witnessed our warm moments and made the corner of Laval feel like a more loving and harmonious home.
Unfortunately, one year ago, this beloved little corner was totally ruined by careless littering. People casually threw plastic bags, empty bottles and all kinds of daily waste into it: plastic bags floating on the water like torn old cloths, glass bottles half stuck in the thick black mud of the shallows like cast-aside teeth, and bad food waste swimming about like rotten(腐烂的) wood. Its once clear water turned into dark black mud, sending out an unpleasant smell that made people hurry away in dislike. No small living things could be seen at all now, and the once lovely waterside plants were dying fast, with their trunks going bad and falling into the dirty water like broken small branches.
This once lovely place was now dirty and smelly, greatly influencing our community. It stayed quiet and grey, with no sign of happy laughter. More and more neighbors were starting to express their complaints.
Sharing my deep disappointment about these terrible changes with my father one afternoon, he told me patiently that the pond was a precious gift for our community. His words touched me deeply, leaving me with a strong desire to protect the pond.

Passage 1
Mrs. Moreno was shocked at the sight of Yollie, but she quickly got her sense of humor at work in just seconds. “Get changed and give the dress a wash. Let’s see what color it will turn,” she said. Yollie broke into laughter, replying, “Greyish, I think. Maybe grey will be in fashion next year.” Yollie got changed and put the dress into the washing machine. When they took it out, they were disappointed that it was an ugly greyish color. “Sorry dear, if you want to wear it again, I will have to dye it black,” Mrs Moreno joked. “I’d better choose a fine day to wear it,” Yollie said giggling.
From then on, Yollie took the ugly dress with her wherever she went. It was a reminder of her mother’s struggle to bring her up, a reminder of Mom’s positiveness towards challenges in life and a reminder of the days when life could be hard but never dull. She knew deep in her heart that she owed everything to her mother, who worked hard, saved and gave her the best education. She decided to dye it black again so that she would be able to put it on and fly home to share with Mom the happiness of graduation.
Passage 2
Seeing this, our neighbor was surprised and curious. He came up to my grandpa and asked with a touch of embarrassment, “How is this possible? I actually looked after my plants better.” My grandpa had his signature smile on and replied, “What you did spared the plants the need to work themselves hard for anything. I gave them just certain water and let their roots do the rest to search for more. And their roots went deeper, which made their position stronger. That is why they survived.”
Grandpa’s explanations not only convinced the neighbor, but made me realize something. My grandpa was strict with me on many occasions with his do’s and don’ts, and that drove me to be independent and work hard for what I wanted, which, however, I’d rarely noticed. I became aware that anything easily got can go off much more easily. Still after a rainy night when the sun is clear and bright the next morning it reminds me of my grandpa’s words. The guidance has taken root in my mind and influences me all the way.
Passage 3
I was shocked at my own rudeness. Staring at the shabby sunflower keychain, warm memories flooded my mind. Father worked long hours driving a taxi to support our family, yet he always cared for my feelings. Even the ugly little gift I made years ago was his treasure. He’d tried to cheer me up after my bad math exam, only to be shouted at cruelly by me. My throat tightened with regret. I grabbed the keychain gently, deciding to apologize sincerely to my father right away.
I knocked at the door and it opened. Father stood there quietly, no trace of anger on his face, only gentle worry in his eyes. I held out the sunflower keychain, voice trembling to say sorry for my bad temper. He patted my head softly, saying he understood my stress from school. We talked about my math troubles, and he comforted me that failure never matters as long as I keep trying. Hanging the keychain back on his belt, he smiled again, filling the house with warm peace.
Passage 4
Jack turned to his mom, confusion written all over his face. He asked his mother where the precious golden box had gone. His mom explained that Mr. Belser had left the box to him in his will. The lawyer would send the package to Jack’s home in a few days. Jack’s heart ached with deep regret. He felt ashamed for being so occupied with work that he barely contacted the kind old man these years. All the warm memories of learning carpentry and chatting with Mr. Belser flooded into his mind, making his eyes wet. He silently promised himself that he would spare more time to accompany his family from then on.
Holding the gold pocket watch, Jack carefully opened the envelope inside the old small package. A short letter written by Mr. Belser lay there. The letter said the watch was the treasure he valued most, for it recorded all the happy hours they spent together. At the bottom of the letter were the familiar words: Good work takes time, and good company is worth every minute. Staring at the words, Jack realized what the old man truly wanted to tell him. He held the watch tightly, determined to slow down his busy life and cherish every moment with his beloved family.
Passage 5
After Lily finished speaking, David asked the group to brainstorm ways to help her. “It’s important to communicate openly with your friend.” David suggested. Other members also chimed in with their own suggestions, like writing a letter or inviting Sarah to an event. Lily wrote down these ideas, her heart lightened by their support. She decided to combine the suggestions and wrote a heartfelt letter, explaining the misunderstanding and inviting Sarah to another concert as a way to make up. With renewed confidence, Lily prepared to deliver the letter and tickets to Sarah.
The next day, Lily approached Sarah in the school hallway with two concert tickets. “Sarah, I’m really sorry for missing our plan last week.” Lily apologized sincerely, handed the letter and tickets to Sarah and smiled at her eagerly. Sarah was taken aback. But after reading the letter, her face softened. She agreed to put the past behind them and looked forward to the concert. Lily’s proactive approach not only mended their friendship but also inspired Sarah to join the youth group, where they both found new ways to seek help and grow together.
Passage 6
Mark couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d done something terribly wrong. Throughout the day, the extra dollar burned a hole in his pocket, a constant reminder of his dishonesty. He couldn't focus on his work, constantly replaying the scene in his mind. He knew he had to make things right, but the thought of facing the woman and admitting his mistake filled him with dread. Finally, he decided to take action. He wrote a note explaining the situation, enclosed the extra dollar, and prepared to deliver it to her house after work.
The next morning, as soon as Mark got to work, he saw the woman from the day before walked in. His heart skipped a beat as he watched her approach the counter. Before she could say anything, Mark reached out and handed her the note and the dollar. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice trembling. “I made a mistake yesterday. The apples were actually eighty-five cents per pound.” The woman looked surprised for a moment, then smiled warmly. “Thank you for your honesty,” she said, her words easing Mark’s guilt. He felt a weight lift off his shoulders, knowing he had done the right thing.

Passage 1
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying their company. I was no longer counting minutes until the bell rang. I found myself explaining a concept to Mauro, not with impatience, but with a genuine desire for him to understand. I listened, truly listened, to Juliette’s careful explanations about her writing. I laughed at a witty headline Rachel proposed. The day before the presentation, we were the last to leave. As we stood back to look at our project, a quiet pride settled over us. We had made this together.
On presentation day, Mrs. Bartlett listened with a soft smile. Afterward, she handed back our project. A bold “A” was circled at the top. But as I looked at my group — at Mauro’s proud grin, Juliette’s shy smile, Rachel’s confident nod — I knew the real grade wasn’t on the paper. Mrs. Bartlett hadn’t just given me a group; she had given me a new way to see things. I learned that sometimes, the people you never thought you’d understand may become the lesson you never forget.
Passage 2
After returning to school, we wondered how to support her. Soon, we worked out ways. The next day, we started a fundraiser, which saw all students, parents, and staff were enthusiastic. That day, we ended up raising over $4,500. To further support Katrina, we took her animals home and helped take care of them. Moreover, we visited her as much as we could. And we gave her cards and gifts to cheer her up. Her room looked like a gift shop after a while. Gradually, Katrina became more hopeful and her smiles returned.
Finally, her cancer was gone and she would go home on her birthday and have a party. We were all excited to be invited to her party. On her birthday, we brought Katrina cakes, gifts, etc. And we celebrated her birthday and her success in survival by dancing, singing songs and playing games. Katrina and her mother quite thanked us for our support during their hardest time. Days later, when Katrina became strong enough, she returned to school and had fun with us again. We were already more than just classmates; we were also close friends.
Passage 3
Inspired, Adam decided to seize the opportunity. Gathering all his courage, Adam stepped up, looked directly at Mr. Smith and said, “Sir, I really love football and I’ve got tired of hearing people say I’m too small to play. Actually I could do as well as the big boys and even better!” Hearing Adam’s words, Mr. Smith raised his eyebrows and thought for a while. Seeing Mr. Smith hesitate slightly, Adam begged him sincerely for a chance. Finally, Mr. Smith nodded and told him to come the next day.
The next day Adam came to the tryout. The players were divided into two groups and Adam ran actively through the field, seeking a chance to goal. Soon, Harold passed him the ball! Adam positioned himself, jumped as high as he could and kicked the ball with his head down. The ball flew directly into the net! A perfect bicycle kick! When Mr. Smith announced the qualified players, Adam’s heart pounded fiercely. Hearing his name, he hugged Harold and jumped with excitement.
Passage 4
Para 1:
Her children brought her presents, all in beautiful ribbon and bright paper, except for George’s. His present was a rough brown paper bag. Other kids began to laugh at his simple gift. Feeling sorry for George, Ms Hart opened it carefully. Inside was a cheap stone necklace and a half-empty bottle of old perfume. She held back her tears and praised his gift sincerely. Then she put on the necklace and sprayed the perfume gently, telling George it was the most special present she had ever received. From that day on, Ms Hart paid extra attention to George, encouraging and caring for him patiently.
Para 2:
Many years later, Ms Hart attended George’s wedding, wearing the very necklace he gave her. Seeing Ms Hart, George was extremely delighted and came up to her gratefully. He told her softly that it was her kindness and encouragement that pulled him out of darkness and gave him the courage to move forward. Ms Hart smiled with relief, realizing that every child deserves equal love and care. A small act of kindness can totally change a person’s life.
Passage 5
Slowly, Ethan unfolded the letter and began to read Anna’s words. Anna wrote that she had cherished the violin more than anything in her life, yet family responsibility forced her to abandon her lifelong musical dream. She stated that she never regretted supporting her sick father, but the unplayed piece had lingered in her mind as an unfulfilled wish for decades. She expressed her sincere hope that whoever received the violin would seize every opportunity to perform fearlessly and never let external difficulties extinguish their passion for music. As Ethan finished reading, his eyes were filled with tears, and a bold idea instantly took shape in his mind.
The next morning, Ethan rushed back to the music store. He handed the letter and music sheet to Mr. Green, asking anxiously whether he could sign up for the upcoming Community Music Night to play Anna’s unfinished composition. Mr. Green stared at the sheet of music in shock, then nodded with warm tears rolling down his cheeks. In the following weeks, Ethan practiced day and night with full devotion. When the night of the performance arrived, he stood on the stage holding the old violin. Every note he played carried Anna’s long-lost longing and his own sincere love for music. The whole audience held their breath, immersed in the touching melody, and thunderous applause burst out the moment the final tone faded away.
Passage 6
However, the Handball Association rejected our application because we weren’t association members. Heshan and I decided to talk with the association, insisting any school on the island should be welcomed. Thankfully, some members also supported us and finally we were allowed to participate. The competition was fierce, as the Colombo students considered it a disgrace to lose a match against boys from a rural village school, saying they wouldn’t allow the cup to be taken out of Colombo. However, our boys played remarkably well and the team’s moves were technically perfect. Through tireless efforts, they fought all the way to the championship.
The victory sent the whole school into festive mode. There was a ceremony to welcome us back. A large banner was hung at the school gate. With colorful balloons released into the sky, the students cheered and jumped with wild joy. The teachers, just as thrilled as the students, joined in the celebration with beaming smiles and contagious enthusiasm. Celebrating the victory was most deserved. We had overcome so many challenges and the players had dedicated so much towards this win, I always had a dream that handball could become a unifying force, bringing students and teachers together, and inspiring everyone to strive for greatness. Heshan and I felt immensely honored to have fulfilled that dream.
Passage 7
Just then, Kevin, the boy who had asked about sports came over, holding a worn book about world sports. “Desmond, is this cricket?” he asked, pointing to a blurry photo. I nodded and pulled out my bat and ball. His eyes lit up with curiosity. “Can you teach me?” he asked. I hesitated, then agreed. After school, we met on the field. I showed him how to hold the flat bat, how to stand, how to swing. He missed the first few throws but kept trying. When he finally sent the ball rolling across the grass, he let out a cheer. “This is actually fun!” For the rest of the afternoon, it was just the two of us — passing the ball, laughing at his wild swings, and me forgetting to flatten my vowels.
When I got home, the smell of my mom’s Jamaican cooking greeted me at the door. “How was school?” Mom asked. “Good,” I said, as she handed me a warm beef patty. I took a bite, and the familiar flavor flooded my mouth. For a moment, I was back in Jamaica, like an ordinary afternoon of playing cricket and devouring a patty. I thought about Kevin, how eagerly he had swung my bat, how my real accent had slipped out unnoticed. Maybe I didn’t have to sound American to belong. Because home wasn’t a place I left behind, it was something I carried with me, in my sport, taste and accent. My different culture could be a bridge, rather than a wall. Maybe, tomorrow I’d bring him a patty too.
Passage 8
After thinking for a while, I knew what I needed to do. That evening, I went from door to door, sharing with the neighbors the truth about Mr. Harris — his arthritis, his heart problem, and why his yard had been left unattended for so long. They listened in silence, their expressions shifting from confusion to guilt. Having learned the truth, all agreed to lend a hand, with one neighbor even offering his weeding machine without a second thought. The following morning, we gathered at Mr. Harris’s house. Caught off guard by our presence, he stared at us in disbelief and then shook his head. “I don’t need pity,” he said. “We’re neighbors,” one of us replied. Only after a brief hesitation did he nod and step aside.
With the help of the whole neighborhood, the yard became neat. The overgrown grass was trimmed, the stubborn weeds pulled out, and the soft edges restored to clean lines. Mr. Harris sat nearby, watching us work with a smile that lingered longer than before. When we finished, he thanked everyone from the bottom of his heart. More importantly, he no longer appeared alone. For the first time, the problem turned from a personal burden into something the whole community shared. What we learned was simple but profound: caring about a neighborhood means acting together, not looking on.

Passage 1
“Sharon, you have to be realistic,” Dad said as we headed to the shelter. “Six months have passed, the storm blows hard, and chances of finding her are small.” I gripped the carrier, knuckles white. “She’s tough, Dad. She survived alone before; I can’t stop trying.” The icy rain drummed on the car as we drove, and I kept staring out of the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of Baby-Girl’s tabby fur. Soon, we pulled up at the shelter, its warm light cutting through the rain. I took a deep breath, clutching the carrier as I opened the door.
At the shelter, the woman at the front desk greeted my dad and me warmly. “Back again. Still hoping?” she asked softly. We walked past cages, my heart sinking — until a back room’s meow stopped me. “That’s a new arrival,” Dad said. “She can’t be there.” I ignored him, pushing in. There she was: skinny, green-eyed! She jumped into my arms. I fetched the carrier, and she climbed in willingly. Dad gazed for a moment, and then suddenly smiled softly, “Guess I was wrong — some things are worth believing in. It’s your persistence that made this reunion possible.”
Passage 2
However, the SPCA was unable to provide timely assistance, leaving Givens to consider his next move. Being aware of the mother goose’s distress and the urgency of the situation, Givens knew he had to act swiftly and cautiously to avoid injuring the fragile bird. With a deep breath, he knelt in the damp grass and approached the trapped gosling with the utmost care. He reached for the balloon string, and cut it gently. The mother goose stayed still, watching with worried but hopeful eyes. Finally, all efforts paid off. With sweat on his face, he succeeded in setting the gosling free.
With the gosling now free, it immediately dashed back to its mother’s side. The mother goose enveloped her gosling in her wings, a protective and loving embrace. Givens stood back, allowing the family to reunite without further human intervention, a warm smile spreading across his face as he wiped the sweat from his brow. Witnessing the tender reunion, Givens felt a sense of awe and appreciation for the profound bond between humans and animals. The incident was inscribed in his mind as a reminder to protect and respect the lives that shared the planet, no matter how small.
Passage 3
Geordi asked what I was doing. I explained to him that if the crab got stuck on its back and could not get back to the water soon, it would die. Horseshoe crabs, I told him, are very important in many ways. Their eggs are a great food source for birds, and their shells and blood have special medical properties that can help many people. Besides, it didn’t seem right to let a species that had survived so long just dry up in the sun. Geordi listened intently, his eyes sparkling with concern. He then bent down and cautiously touched Spike’s shell with his finger, murmuring, “Go home, Spike.” We watched the horseshoe crab slowly make his way back into the ocean.
Geordi spotted many more horseshoe crabs on their backs. He decided that we should help them all. Without fear or hesitation, he began picking up stuck horseshoe crabs and turning them over, and helped me carry them to the water. He was extra careful and gentle, worried that he may hurt one. His sincere concern for the horseshoe crabs touched my heart. When the job was done and it was time to leave, Geordi asked, “Do you think we will ever see Spike again?” “Maybe,” I said, “but now that we have helped him, we know he will be okay even if we don’t see him again.”
Passage 4
To her horror, the basket was empty. Jane’s heart sank as she frantically searched the yard, her voice trembling with fear as she called Pip’s name. Tears welled up in her eyes as she imagined the worst, fearing that Pip might have been blown away by the storm or hurt by the falling branches. She knelt down, scanning the ground for any sign of the little sparrow, her hands shaking as she picked up twigs and leaves.
At this moment, Mr. Thompson appeared with Pip. He held the sparrow gently in his hands, his expression a mix of concern and embarrassment. “I found him hiding under my porch,” he said, his voice softer than usual. “The storm was too strong for him.” Jane rushed over, tears of relief streaming down her face as she took Pip back. She looked up at Mr. Thompson, her eyes shining with gratitude. “Thank you.” she whispered, her heart overflowing with joy and newfound respect for her neighbor.
Passage 5
Hearing this, I turned to my uncle, “I think we can plant trees too.” Grabbing the camera in my hand, I added with excitement, “I’ve got a plan! I’ll show them the photos of Kabir’s magical forest!” Seeing Uncle and Kabir’s encouraging smile, I immediately set down to work, busy pressing my shutter. When Uncle and I went back to the village and showed these wonderful pictures to my neighbors, they were stunned by the beauty of the forest. “It was the trees that turned the place into a paradise!” We then explained our tree-planting plan to the villagers, which was quickly accepted by all of them.
In the years that followed, people in our village worked hard to carry out our plan. Instead of cutting down our forest, we started to plant trees, which has eventually helped protect the soil and stopped the land from eroding. Thanks to the trees, the water has been purified and we finally have clean and stable water supply. With our joint efforts, our village is now surrounded by small thriving forests with blooming flowers, lively animals and crystal-clear streams running through. Witnessing the gradual change of our village, we’ve come to realize that only when we live in harmony with nature can we have a brighter future.
Passage 6
I began to brainstorm ways with my father to protect this pond. First, we designed colorful posters comparing the pond’s past beauty with its current mess, printing them to post around the neighborhood. We also planned small “green talks” in the community hall, where we shared how littering ruined the pond and simple ways to fix it. I felt a spark of hope, knowing we could turn things around if everyone pitched in.
After our one-week green talks, I called on neighbors to start our much-needed cleanup. Over twenty people showed up with gloves and trash bags. Some fished plastic waste from the water, others cleared mud-covered bottles from the banks, and elderly neighbors collected dying plants to replant later. By day’s end, the pond looked cleaner, and the foul smell had lessened. We set up trash bins nearby and a reminder sign. When I saw a kid stop to admire the water, I knew our warm community corner was on its way back.

【参考范文】

注意:
