Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. It might not have been the first to have a touchscreen but it was Tesla’s Model S, with its minimalist cabin built around a huge full-colour display, that set the trend. For years almost every new car sold has come with a high-tech, futuristic screen, which controls everything from the air conditioning and the music to satellite navigation. Even safety features like automatic lane-keeping are sometimes screen- 1 (control). But are touchscreens safe? The case for the prosecution is straightforward. If adjusting the screen of a smartphone while driving is 2 (distract), and therefore dangerous, then doing likewise with your car’s is probably risky too. Drivers can learn the location of physical controls, and press buttons or adjust dials without taking their eyes off the road. A touchscreen offers no physical feedback, making that much harder. And 3 a screen must do dozens of jobs, finding a particular setting often means tapping through several sub-menus. The result, say critics, is a dangerous distraction built into the car itself. Research backs that up. In 2022 Vi Bilagare, a Swedish motoring magazine, measured how long it took drivers to do things like switching to a new radio station or changing the temperature, while driving at 110 kilometres per hour. It 4 (compare) 11 cars with touchscreens to a single older model with real buttons. In the old car, drivers were able to do all their tasks within about ten seconds, during 5 time the car travelled around 300 metres. Another study, done in 2024 by researchers at SINTEF, a Norwegian contract-research organization, used gaze-tracking cameras to compare 6 drivers were distracted while performing different tasks on a touchscreen. Even the quickest job — changing the temperature — meant three and a half seconds, on average, of not looking at the road. Finding a new radio station took 11 seconds, and putting a new address into the satnav took 16. Safety organizations 7 (begin) to notice. From January new rules from Euro NCAP, an organization that provides safety ratings for cars sold in Europe, will mean no car can get a full five-star score 8 certain crucial functions — indicators, for instance, or the windscreen wipers — are controlled by real switches. Euro NCAP’s safety guidelines have no legal force. But carmakers use its ratings as a selling-point. Car makers who choose to bring back physical buttons may reap other benefits, too. Many drivers dislike touchscreens for reasons 9 safety, finding them difficult and annoying to use. Volkswagen, Hyundai and Porsche, among others, have begun restoring at least some buttons to their new models, 10 (cite) drivers’ dislike of screens. But innovation never stops. 1.controlled 2.distracting 3.because/as/since 4.compared 5.which 6.how long 7.are beginning/have begun 8.unless 9.other than/apart from/aside from 10.citing 【导语】本文主要探讨了汽车触摸屏的安全性问题,通过研究数据和监管动态说明了其存在的分心风险,并指出部分车企因应消费者反馈和新的安全评级标准,开始重新回归实体按钮。 此空引导宾语从句,结合下文“Even the quickest job — changing the temperature — meant three and a half seconds, on average, of not looking at the road. Finding a new radio station took 11 seconds, and putting a new address into the satnav took 16.” 此处表示“除了出于安全考虑,还有操作体验上的原因”,用other than/apart from/aside from“除…… Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A.amateur    B.bathed    C. bouncing    D.crawl E. defining    F. further    G. intervening    H. literally I. livestream    J. missions    K. undisturbed Going Back to the Moon On 17 January, after years of delays, the towering SLS rocket that will carry the first astronauts to the Moon in over half a century finally rolled out of the Vehicle Assembly Building at the Kennedy Space Center. The Artemis vehicle, 11 in early morning sunshine, headed for its launch pad. More delays and a roll back to the assembly building for repairs came later, but for me this was a 12 moment. I sat in front of my television for hours with my cat draped across my lap, watching NASA’s 13 of the rocket’s progress to the pad. The cat was totally unimpressed, and I know that for those who, like her, are not ‘into space’, watching a rocket’s oh-so-slow 14 to its destination was probably about as stimulating as watching a tortoise watching paint dry. But I was deeply moved. Why? Because I’ve waited 15 decades to see that rocket heading for its pad. I wasn’t even born when Apollo 8 rounded the Moon, and I was just starting school when the later Apollo 16 reached the Moon, and have vivid memories of the whole school sitting on the hard, cold floor in front of The School Television. It was watching the grainy footage of those astronauts 17 about on that TV screen that first lit the pilot light of my fascination with space. When Apollo 17 left the Moon, I was sad — but excited too. After all, everyone was saying we’d be back soon and that nuclear-powered spaceships would be carrying astronauts to Mars in 1982, by which time I’d be a teenager. But that future never happened. After Apollo 17, we abandoned the Moon, leaving the flags and footprints of the Apollo heroes 18 for decades. I grew up to become a(n) 19 astronomer and science writer, covering one cancelled lunar exploration programme after another. As I wrote article after article telling kids how astronauts could be back on the Moon “soon”, I felt the return to the Moon getting 20 away, not closer as it was supposed to. But watching that SLS rolling to its pad, I was able to really believe that it won’t be long before I’ll finally be able to go out into my yard, look up at the Moon shining above and say, “There are people flying around that …” bathed为过去分词,与其逻辑主语The Artemis vehicle构成被动关系,且(be)bathed in为固定搭配,意为“沐浴在…… 根据上文“sat in front of my television for hours”可知,作者坐在电视机前数小时,应是在观看直播,livestream为名词,意为“直播”。 14. 空前leaving为现在分词,the flags and footprints of the Apollo heroes为leaving的宾语,空处应填形容词作宾语补足语,描述旗帜和脚印处于“未被干扰”的状态。 后文“not closer as it was”与空前内容形成对比,空处填入副词further表示程度,getting further away意为“越来越远”,further与后文的closer形成对照。 C 【来源】上海市行知中学2025-2026学年高三第二学期5月英语月考试卷 “Every technology has improved over the years except batteries! Why can’t someone invent a better battery?” These are the words we often hear from technology fans. In fact, though, the average technology fan is 21 two huge points about batteries. First point: The batteries you probably 22 most are the ones in your phone or laptop. But you could argue — and many scientists do that batteries are the keys to handling much, much bigger problems, like energy, transportation and climate change. 23 , today electric cars represent only about 1 percent of U.S. new car sales. One reason is they cost more than gas-powered cars. Another is 24 anxiety — consumers’ fear they’ll run out of charge far from home. The 25 , higher-capacity (容量) batteries now under development aim to solve both those problems. Then there’s the grid (输电网). Electric utilities (电力公司) spend their days coping with swings in energy 26 . There’s almost no demand at night, when everyone’s asleep, and then tremendous increase at 5 p.m., when people get home from work. Utilities actually 27 expensive, inefficient, occasionally used backup power plants just to handle demand increase, as occurs during heat waves. Batteries connected to the grid could even out those strange swings. Maybe even more important, grid batteries could capture solar power while the sun’s shining — and wind power when it’s blowing — for use when we really 28 it. Thus far we haven’t been able to make the sun and wind respect our lifestyle 29 . The other important point: Batteries have been getting better over the decades. The reason why we don’t 30 it is that our devices have been getting faster, more powerful and more power hungry at the same time. If you could put a 31 iPhone battery into a 1995 phone, it’d probably go a year on a single charge. Other great things are 32 . Materials scientist Mike Zimmerman has succeeded in replacing the liquid electrolyte (液体电解质), which can burn easily, with a single piece of special plastic film. That is, batteries 33 exploding. And because it’s unblowuppable, Zimmerma can use lithium metal, which has a much higher energy density but is considered too 34 to us with today’s liquid-electrolyte batteries. That is: batteries with a longer life. So if you do want to complain about your batteries, get it out now. It won’t be long before they have a much better 35 . 21.A.solving B.following C.missing D.weighing 22.A.think about B.take up C.get across D.see through 23.A.In summary B.In addition C.By contrast D.For example 24.A.range B.power C.state D.stress 25.A.stronger B.cheaper C.safer D.cleaner 26.A.price B.demand C.stock D.control 27.A.maintain B.evaluate C.abandon D.identify 28.A.emphasize B.stop C.neglect D.need 29.A.varieties B.directions C.schedules D.purposes 30.A.notice B.doubt C.support D.ignore 31.A.charged B.used C.dead D.modern 32.A.at a loss B.in the darkness C.on the way D.with a question 33.A.inconvenient for B.incapable of C.sensitive to D.different from 34.A.popular B.dangerous C.common D.economical 35.A.comparison B.opportunity C.understanding D.reputation 【答案】 21.C 22.A 23.D 24.A 25.B 26.B 27.A 28.D 29.C 30.A 31.D 32.C 33.B 34.B 35.D 【导语】文章讲述人们总抱怨电池技术停滞不前,却忽略两个关键点:电池能解决电动车、电网储能等能源难题,且多年来一直在进步。 A. solving解决;B. following跟随;C. missing忽略,漏掉;D. weighing权衡。 A. think about想到;B. take up占据;C. get across使理解;D. see through看穿。根据后文“the ones in your phone or laptop”和“like energy, transportation and climate change”描述大众只会联想到数码设备电池,不会联想到电动汽车、电网储能电池可知,手机或笔记本电脑里的电池是人们最先想到的电池。 23. A. In summary总之;B. In addition此外;C. By contrast相比之下;D. For example例如。前文“batteries are the keys to handling much, much bigger problems, like energy, transportation and climate change”提出电池能解决交通、能源等重大难题,而后文用电动汽车的现状举例佐证观点可知,For example符合语境。 24. A. range续航;B. power电力;C. state状态;D. stress压力。根据后文“they’ll run out of charge far from home”解释该词含义为担心电动车电量不足、半路没电可知,此处指续航焦虑,range anxiety是固定搭配,表示“续航焦虑”,符合语境。 25. A. price价格;B. demand需求;C. stock储备;D. control控制。根据后文“There’s almost no demand at night”以及语境可知,此处指昼夜对电力需求的波动,demand为原词复现,符合语境。 27. A. maintain维持,保有;B. evaluate评估;C. abandon舍弃;D. identify识别。根据后文“used backup power plants just to handle demand increase, as occurs during heat waves”提到备用电厂仅用电高峰启用,却需要长期投入运营可知,此处指电力公司需要维护、保有这些设施。 28. A. emphasize强调;B. stop停止;C. neglect忽视;D. need需要。 A. varieties种类;B. directions方向;C. schedules作息,时间安排;D. purposes目的。根据前文“solar power while the sun’s shining — and wind power when it’s blowing”描述白天阳光充足、风力充足,但人们傍晚下班才大量用电可知,此处指能源产出时间和人们生活作息时间不匹配。 30. A. notice注意到;B. doubt怀疑;C. support支持;D. ignore忽视。根据开篇“Every technology has improved over the years except batteries!” A. charged充好电的;B. used用过的;C. dead没电的;D. modern现代的。 A. at a loss困惑;B. in the darkness在黑暗中;C. on the way即将到来;D. with a question存有疑问。根据后文“Materials scientist Mike Zimmerman has succeeded in replacing the liquid electrolyte”介绍科学家研发出新型电池技术可知,此处指更多电池创新技术正在研发、即将问世。 33. A. inconvenient for不方便;B. incapable of不能;C. sensitive to对…… A. comparison对比;B. opportunity机会;C. understanding理解;D. reputation口碑,名声。根据开篇“Every technology has improved over the years except batteries!” Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. When the Going Gets Rough Does change frighten you? There are many ways 1 (handle) the little surprises life throws at us. Stuff happens. There’s nothing we can do to change that. But the problem is that our bodies and brains are programmed to be suspicious of change — to be anxious about it. After all, change means uncertainty and, in our evolutionary past, that meant a greater risk of meeting up with a hungry lion or 2 (annoy) elephant. Therefore, when you are uncertain, the brain releases stress hormones, the fight-or-flight chemicals 3 , when we lived on the savannah, helped our ancestors avoid these hungry lions or face them down. The problem is that the uncertainties we 4 (face) with today aren’t generally as life-or-death, and don’t usually resolve to a quick getaway. So we have to deal with those excess stress hormones in a different way, which is where mindfulness can really help. Here are some top tips for dealing with change so the next time something new and challenging arises, you’ll know exactly what to do. Control What You Can Even in the most difficult of situations, there are some things that you can control. Make a list of these things, 5 small they seem, and then start doing them. You will find that ticking them off the list will make the 6 (controllable) problems appear much more manageable. Opportunity, Not Disaster Suppose you don’t get the grades you need for university, or you don’t get your dream job. One natural response is to think of it as a disaster and that your life is over. This will achieve nothing and make you miserable. 7 is to think of it as an opportunity to do something else entirely: go travelling, apply for an apprenticeship, etc. Studies have shown that people who train themselves to see change as an opportunity 8 a challenge cope with it far better. One way of coping with it is to work out 9 the uncertainty will last for. 10 (know) when things will change for the better gives your mind an end point that allows it to cope with the uncertain present. 1.to handle 2.annoyed 3.which/that 4.are faced 5.however 6.less controllable 7.Another 8.instead of/rather than 9.how long 10.Knowing 【导语】本文主要介绍了大脑应对变化的机制以及现在社会中的不确定性给应对方式带来改变,并给出面对变化带来的挑战时的一些应对方法。 a way/ways to do sth. 前文“Even in the most difficult of situations, there are some things that you can control. Make a list of these things, _____ small they seem, and then start doing them.” Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Yet that is what is happening to makers of video games. For years parents have complained that their children are “addicted” to their smartphones. Today, however, ever more doctors are using the term 11 . On January 1st “gaming disorder” — in which games are played compulsively, despite causing harm — gains recognition from the World Health Organisation (WHO), as the newest edition of its diagnostic 12 comes into force. Are games really addictive? Psychologists are 13 . The case for the defence is that this is just another moral panic. Killjoys of the past issued similarly warnings about television, rock’n’ roll, jazz, and even crossword puzzles. As the newest form of mass media, gaming is merely 14 its own time in the stocks before it eventually ceases to be controversial. However, some opponents argue that, unlike rock bands or novelists, games developers have both the motive and the means to 15 their products to make them irresistible. The motive arises from a business-model shift. In the old days games were bought for a one-off 16 . These days, many use a “freemium” model, in which the game is free and money is made from purchases of in-game goods. That ties playtime directly to revenue (收益). Smartphones and modern consoles use their permanent internet connections to 17 gameplay data back to developers. That allows products to be constantly fine-tuned to boost spending. While psychologists argue the 18 points of what exactly counts as addiction, and whether gaming’s design tricks cross the line, the industry should recognise that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is 19 . Now that gaming addiction comes with an official WHO code, diagnoses will become more common. Clinics are already reporting booming business, as lockdowns have given gamers more time to spend with their hobby. The regulatory climate for tech is getting chillier. And being 20 in the public mind, fairly or not, with gambling and tobacco will not do the industry any favours. 根据“parents have complained that their children are “addicted””及“ever more doctors are using the term”可知,医生不再委婉提及,而是真正、字面意义上使用“上瘾”这一术语,用副词literally“逐字地、真正地”,修饰using,作状语。 12. 本空作宾语,用名词,根据上文“gains recognition from the WHO”可知,此处指世卫组织的诊断手册,用名词manual“手册”,diagnostic manual意为“诊断手册”。 13. 根据下文“The case for the defence is”及“some opponents argue that”可知,心理学家们存在分歧,本空用形容词split“分离的”,作表语。 14. 根据“its own time in the stocks before it eventually ceases to be controversial”可知,作者认为游戏只是在忍受、熬过争议时期,本空用动词endure“忍受”,此处用现在分词enduring,与is构成进行时。 15. 根据“their products to make them irresistible. Time It Uncertainty, rather than change itself, is the biggest cause of stress. One way of coping with it is to work out 9 the uncertainty will last for. 10 (know) when things will change for the better gives your mind an end point that allows it to cope with the uncertain present. Will It Work for His Successor? Sometimes a company reflects the spirit of its time. Ford’s Model T 21 the go-getting mood of the Roaring Twenties; IBM embodied the tech optimism of the computer age; and in recent years, Apple has stood as the 22 brand of our era. Its iPhone, a sleek (流畅的) gateway to the app economy, has become as iconic as big hair was to the 1980s, while its embrace of globalization — especially its focus on China as a manufacturing and sales hub — has 23 its success. This focus on China has not only made the country a key production base but also a major market, with Apple’s revenue from China growing dramatically under Tim Cook’s leadership, 24 more than 12% of its total revenue by 2013. For the past 15 years, Apple has been led by Tim Cook. Though Steve Jobs 25 up the iPhone, it was Mr. Cook who turned it into a global phenomenon, putting the device into 1.5 billion pockets and making the Apple logo a familiar 26 from San Francisco to Seoul. Under his leadership, Apple’s market value soared; and its shareholders reaped huge rewards — with cumulative profits that run into the trillions. Now, Mr. Cook will 27 , and his successor John Ternus faces a critical question: does the winning formula that drove Apple’s success — smartphones, global supply chains, and a focus on China — still 28 in an era of AI and shifting global dynamics? Mr. Cook’s 29 was a bet on globalization: he leaned into global supply chains and China’s growing market, turning Apple into an empire. Yet his term saw no products as 30 as the iPhone or iPad, even the Vision Pro, with its prohibitively 31 price tag, failed to make a lasting mark. 32 , he built his legacy on refining what worked — improving the iPhone, expanding its reach, and 33 its place in the global market. This approach thrived in an era of open trade, but the world is changing. Geopolitical tensions are rising, trade barriers are returning, and AI is reshaping the tech 34 . Ternus, who has worked at Apple since 2001 and currently serves as senior vice president of hardware engineering, overseeing products like the iPhone and Vision Pro, faces the daunting task of adapting Apple’s strategy. For Mr. Ternus, the challenge is clear: to 35 Apple’s formula for a new age, integrating AI into its core products without losing the core that made it great — quality, innovation, and global appeal. 21.A.rejected B.captured C.ignored D.predicted 22.A.declining B.controversial C.defining D.unfamiliar 23.A.pursued B.reversed C.limited D.shaped 24.A.accounting for B.holding up C.standing for D.allowing for 25.A.dressed B.dreamed C.held D.gave 26.A.brand B.device C.sight D.touch 27.A.step down B.carry on C.show up D.give in 28.A.work B.fail C.stick D.change 29.A.command B.preference C.approval D.strategy 30.A.fashionable B.transformative C.outdated D.accessible 31.A.decent B.advanced C.ambitious D.high 32.A.Meanwhile B.Besides C.Instead D.Therefore 33.A.solidifying B.overlooking C.questioning D.losing 34.A.impact B.landscape C.product D.service 35.A.create B.abandon C.maintain D.update
