七、阅读理解(A篇 记叙文;B篇 说明文;C篇 表格类)
A
In 1943, a naval engineer named Richard James was working on a project to develop a spring that could support sensitive equipment on ships. One day, he accidentally knocked a spring off his desk. Instead of falling flat, the spring "walked" down from a stack of books onto the floor and then stood up. James was fascinated. He brought the spring home to show his wife, Betty. She thought it could be a toy. They started a company to produce the spring as a toy. At first, it didn't sell well. But after they demonstrated it in a department store, people became interested. The spring toy, later named the Slinky, became a huge success. Over 300 million Slinkys have been sold worldwide. This is a classic example of an accidental invention — a simple mistake that turned into a beloved toy that brought joy to millions of children.

Some of the most famous inventions in history were created accidentally. An accidental invention is a product or process that was discovered unintentionally while someone was working on something else. The microwave oven is one well-known example. In 1945, engineer Percy Spencer was working on radar technology. He noticed that a chocolate bar in his pocket had melted while he was standing near a magnetron. This led him to experiment with microwaves and eventually to the invention of the microwave oven. Another example is the pacemaker. In 1956, Wilson Greatbatch was working on a device to record heartbeats when he accidentally used the wrong resistor. The device produced a rhythmic electrical pulse that could regulate the heartbeat. He realized this could be used to create a pacemaker. Accidental inventions remind us that being open to unexpected discoveries can lead to amazing results. They also show that creativity and a curious mind are important qualities for inventors.
