People in China started making real porcelain over two thousand years ago, during the Eastern Han period. At first, porcelain was made for everyday needs like bowls, plates, pots, and jars. Porcelain is waterproof and durable, making it great for storing liquids like wine and vinegar. As porcelain-making techniques improved and people wanted prettier things, porcelain became finer and more artistic. Besides being used for everyday things, porcelain also started to be used for decoration and in ceremonies. It showed off a person’s taste and social status. At parties and important social events, beautiful porcelain was a key way to show wealth and culture. Porcelain-making reached a peak during the Song Dynasty. Back then, porcelain was hard, shiny, and came in many types like green, white, and black porcelain. By the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the making of blue and white porcelain was very advanced, and porcelain craftsmanship reached new heights. The designs on porcelain often have deep meanings. For example, lotus flowers represent cleanliness and elegance, and dragons stand for power and majesty. The shape and decoration of the porcelain also reflected the beauty standards and social trends of the time. For example, Song Dynasty porcelain emphasized simplicity and nature, while Ming and Qing porcelain focused more on rich colours and elaborate decorations. Chinese porcelain was not only important inside China but was also a popular item traded on the maritime Silk Road, showing off China’s excellent craftsmanship and helping to exchange cultures between East and West. Today, ancient Chinese porcelain is often seen as a national treasure and is displayed in museums around the world, attracting many visitors. Each piece of porcelain carries the wisdom and hard work of ancient Chinese artisans and is an important window into Chinese history and culture. Read the text, and answer the following questions. 1. When did Chinese people begin to make real porcelain? 2. What is the main difference in style between Song Dynasty porcelain and Ming and Qing porcelain? 3. What role did Chinese porcelain play on the maritime Silk Road? 【强化提升练习】 一、阅读理解 A One in five children starting primary school in the UK are overweight. By the time they leave school, that figure will rise to one in three. The chance of them being overweight in adulthood, which brings a range of associated health risks, is high, at 50-75%. The root cause of diet-related fatness is no secret: an energy imbalance between the quantity of food being consumed and the level of physical activity being conducted. Addressing this imbalance needs to be, in part, a review of our diet. More fresh ingredients(原料) especially fruit and vegetables, less processed foods and fewer additives(添加剂) are all important factors in building a balanced diet. The Department of Health has recognized that a collective approach, rather than just individual behavior change, is a successful way of achieving this. Universal adjustments like a blanket decrease in sugar content influence the way we eat through the choices available to us. Applying this approach to school kitchens makes sense. They have an important role to play in maintaining healthy diets. Offering a school menu packed with fresh ingredients and without artificial additives makes a direct and effective impact on what children eat at school. It’s an area the Soil Association consistently works to handle through its Food for Life program—working with schools to transform food culture, improve food education and encourage lasting changes to the way schools think about food. It works. In Food for Life schools, pupils are a third less likely to eat no fruit or vegetables than those in comparison schools. One way for schools to get involved is a Food for Life Served Here award, which means at least 75% of dishes are prepared on site using fresh ingredients. It encourages local seasonal produce and, at silver or gold level, requires a commitment to environmentally friendly produce. At its heart, the award is designed to support health and enhance food understanding. Over 50% of English primary schools have such an award already, serving around 1.7 million meals each day to over 10,000 schools and it’s a figure we’ll see grow. 1. What does the underlined word “addressing” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Tackling. B. Ignoring. C. Maintaining. D. Postponing. 2. Which approach will work for students to build balanced diet? A. Stopping them eating alone in schools. B. Getting them aware of the harm of fatness. C. Ensuring healthy recipes on school menus. D. Increasing the availability and flavor of food. 3. What can we say about the Food for Life program? A. It’s a heavy load on schools. B. It’s complicated to operate. C. It’s a temporary project. D. It’s a fruitful attempt. 4. Which type of food may the Food for Life Served Here award promote? A. Sugary snacks. B. First-class sausages. C. High-quality imported beef. D. Freshly picked organic beans. B Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles. Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are initially scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt, most are eager to try something new. Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools. Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says. She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition. Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.” 5. What do we know about Abby Jaramillo? A. She used to be a health worker. B. She grew up in a low-income family. C. She owns a fast food restaurant. D. She is an initiator of Urban Sprouts. 6. What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program? A. The kids’ parents distrusted her. B. Students had little time for her classes. C. Some kids disliked garden work. D. There was no space for school gardens. 7. Which of the following best describes the impact of the program? A. Far-reaching. B. Predictable. C. Short-lived. D. Unidentifiable. 8. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Rescuing School Gardens B. Experiencing Country Life C. Growing Vegetable Lovers D. Changing Local Landscape 二、七选五阅读 Earth Hour is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature. It’s a big event usually at the end of March every year. On this evening, people “go dark”. 1 It’s true that turning off lights for just one hour saves only a small amount of power. 2 On one level, joining in Earth Hour makes people think about the problem of climate change and what we can do in everyday life to protect nature. But on another level, a large number of people’s acting together sends a powerful message to governments and companies. 3 They begin considering green issues when making big decisions. The logo(标识) of Earth Hour is “60+”. The number 60 is for the 60 minutes of Earth Hour. 4 In fact, people who join in Earth Hour say that taking part makes them want to do more for the environment. 5 Musicians give concerts by playing acoustic(原声的) instruments instead of electric ones, and using candles instead of electric lights. Celebrity chefs have created special recipes for families to prepare and eat by candlelight. Tree-planting sessions, group walks and runs are also among the options. A. But this is only the beginning. B. Earth Hour represents every hour of every day. C. After all, everyone has to answer for what they have done. D. Besides turning off the lights, people get involved in other events. E. It pushes them to take urgent measures by making changes to policies. F. That is, they switch off all unnecessary lights at the same time for one hour. G. The plus invites people to continue their action even after Earth Hour is finished. 1. ______ vt. In the past, the majority tended to assist the old who fainted or fell down. But at present when an old man trips over, some people get into moral dilemmas, not knowing whether to help him. They are scared to be framed, making themselves get into trouble. Therefore, they refuse to help and give first aid to the old. In my opinion, we should stick to moral principles, carrying the old through difficulties. 素养积累阅读 Porcelain Chinese porcelain is a treasure of the world’s ceramic art, known for its beautiful craftsmanship and deep cultural meaning. 1. [答案] 1—4 ACDD B Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. Changing Local Landscape [答案] 5—8 DCAC 二、七选五阅读 Earth Hour is organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature. D.
