The Windbreak on Black-Sand Hill
When fourteen-year-old Salim first joined his village's tree team, Black-Sand Hill looked empty. In spring, strong winds carried sand toward the road and covered vegetable fields. The team planted 600 young trees in straight rows. By autumn, fewer than 100 were alive.
Some villagers wanted to stop. Team leader Aunt Raya asked them to mark where the surviving trees stood. They noticed that most survivors were behind small stones or dry grass. Instead of planting immediately again, they visited a nearby research station. An expert explained that low barriers could slow the wind and keep a little moisture in the ground.
The next spring, the villagers laid straw in checkerboard shapes. They planted fewer trees but cared for them more carefully. Children checked soil moisture; adults repaired broken barriers. When summer winds arrived, the young trees held their ground.
Three years later, the first belt of trees sheltered a second belt. Sand crossed the road less often, and farmers lost fewer vegetables. The team then formed a small cooperative. Visitors paid for guided walks, and part of the income bought tools and seedlings.
The hill was not changed by one heroic day. It changed because the team measured failure, learned from evidence and improved its method.
1. Which is the correct order? ①visit experts ②form a cooperative ③plant straight rows ④lay straw checkerboards
A. ③①④② B. ①③②④
C. ③④①② D. ④③①②

A. The trees stayed alive and in place. B. The children owned the land.
C. The villagers stopped working. D. The wind became stronger.
3. Why did Aunt Raya mark the places of surviving trees?
A. To count how many tools were lost. B. To find a pattern that might explain survival.
C. To decide where visitors should walk. D. To sell the stones and dry grass.
4. How did the cooperative support the project?
A. It moved the village away from the hill. B. It used some visitor income for tools and seedlings.
C. It replaced trees with vegetable fields. D. It paid people to create stronger winds.
5. Which sentence best expresses the passage's message?
A. Large projects need the largest first step. B. Success can grow from studying failure and improving a method.
