One day, Itzhak Perlman, a world-famous violinist, came to give a concert to 6 of healthcare workers at Lincoln Centre in New York City.
We sat quietly as he made his way to his chair and began to play. However, something unexpected 7 in the middle of the concert. One of the strings (弦) on his violin broke. We thought that the concert would have to be cancelled (取消), as it was nearly 8 to play great music on a violin with just three strings.
To our surprise, Perlman didn’t give 9 . Instead, he asked the conductor (指挥家) 10 again. He played from 11 he had stopped. He played so beautifully as if nothing was wrong. The music that was made with just three strings was still very 12 . When the music 13 we were so surprised that there was a short silence in the room. And then all the people rose and cheered for 14 .
Later he told us, “I made 15 amazing discovery today. Sometimes an artist should try to find out how much music he can still make with something important missing.”
Perhaps that is the way of life—not just for artists but for all of us.

固定结构ask sb. to do sth.

CLASSICAL ERA
The term “classical” is often used to tell the difference between serious music and popular music. The symphony (交响乐) developed in this period. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, there were two of the most famous composers.
Mozart was a talented composer and performed all over Europe at the age of six. He wrote the famous opera The Magic Flute. ROMANTIC MOVEMENT
From about 1820, composers started using new harmonies (和声) and forms to create music full of different emotions. Composers cared more about creating dramas, painting pictures in sound, or telling stories.
The Russian composer Tchaikovsky was unhappy in his personal life, which brought great emotional depth to his music. He wrote many well-known works, including the famous Overture 1812.
MODERN MUSIC
In the 20th century, there were great changes in serious music. The music composed by Stravinsky was difficult for people to understand. Stravinsky’s The Firebird caused a sensation at its first performance in Paris in 1910. It was a big success. The music was so different and powerful that it made the young composer famous across Europe. The German Stockhausen challenged listeners’ ideas about music. In Zyklus, for example, he let the drummer start playing from any page of the music, and then play it in their own order.

The German composer Beethoven was completely deaf for the last 10 years of his life but he continued to compose some of the greatest music in the world. Symphony No. 9 is one of them. His late works moved toward the Romantic movement.

Computers can help composers write music. The composer can use an electronic instrument to enter the melodies into the computer, where they can be stored, changed, and printed out.

D.Computers can write music without composers’ help.
35.What is the best title for the passage?
