A New Way to Get Water on the Moon
Water is one of the most important resources for human life. If humans want to live on the Moon, they need a steady supply of water. But where can they get it from? Scientists have recently discovered a possible answer—the lunar soil itself.
In the past, researchers believed that there was water ice at the Moon’s poles. However, recent studies have shown that water can also be produced directly from lunar soil. When lunar soil is heated to more than 1,000°C, it melts and releases water vapor. This vapor can be collected and turned into liquid water.
The discovery was made possible by studying rocks and soil brought back by China’s Chang’e-5 spacecraft. Researchers found that only 100 grams of lunar soil can produce between 51 and 76 milligrams of water. This may not sound like much, but it is enough for astronauts to drink and use during short stays on the Moon.
This method opens up new possibilities for future lunar exploration. If we can produce water on the Moon, it will be much easier to build bases there. Water can also be split into oxygen and hydrogen, which can be used for breathing and rocket fuel.
The technology is still being tested, but the results are promising. As one scientist said, “This discovery brings us one step closer to living on the Moon.”
