Born in 1961 in Oregon, Mary Brunkow developed an early love for math and science, particularly genetics (基因学). Although she entered university on a pre-medicine track, a genetics course and her first lab experience completely changed her direction, leading her toward a career in research.
At Princeton University, Brunkow chose to study a gene that many scientists considered as “rubbish.” Later, working with Fred Ramsdell, she turned to an old scientific puzzle — the “scurfy (多鳞屑)” mouse. This mutation (突变), which had appeared by chance in the 1940s, caused severe autoimmune (自我免疫的) disease only in males. The responsible gene was known to lie on the X chromosome (染色体), but its exact identity remained a mystery.
Brunkow and Ramsdell believed that finding this gene would reveal a lot about how autoimmune diseases take place. In the 1990s, locating a single mutated gene was nearly impossible. They mapped the related region of the X chromosome and narrowed the search to twenty potential genes. To raise enough mice, Brunkow even changed an unused janitor’s closet (清洁储藏室) into a mouse room. After much effort, they found a tiny genetic change in a gene they named Foxp3.
They next supposed that Foxp3 might also cause IPEX, a rare human autoimmune disease linked to the X chromosome. In 2001, they confirmed that mutations in Foxp3 are responsible for both IPEX and the scurfy condition. This discovery made researchers know how the body learned not to attack itself.
In 2025, Brunkow and Ramsdell shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Japanese immunologist Shimon Sakaguchi. Their work opened new possibilities for treating cancer and autoimmune diseases. Brunkow’s journey — from a “rubbish” gene to a Nobel Prize — shows how following scientific curiosity can lead to discoveries that truly change medicine.
4. What made Brunkow change her career direction?
A. Her early interest in math and science, especially genetics.
B. A genetics course and her first experience in the lab.
C. Her choice to study a “rubbish” gene at Princeton University.
D. Her desire to solve the puzzle of the “scurfy” mouse mutation.
5. What was the major reason for Brunkow and Ramsdell to win the Nobel Prize?
A. They found the real identify and function of the “scurfy” mice.
B. They invented a new treatment for all kinds of autoimmune diseases.
C. They identified the Foxp3 gene and revealed its key role in immune regulation.
D. They proved that scientific curiosity can lead to great discoveries.
6. Which of the following best describes Brunkow as a scientist?
A. Impatient. B. Curious. C. Emotional. D. Proud.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. A pair of hardworking researchers. B. A promising career in medicine.
C. A forgotten laboratory experiment. D. An admirable scientist and her discovery.

Large glass buildings enjoy an attractive appearance and are widely adopted in modern building design. But they suffer from an unavoidable problem. Too much sunlight passes through the glass, causing indoor temperatures to rise greatly during hot summers. To keep a comfortable indoor temperature, air-conditioning (空调) devices have to work continuously, consuming a lot of electric energy.
Is it possible to create glass that can darken automatically(自动地) against strong sunlight, requiring no electric power at all? Scientists from Aarhus University in Denmark have successfully invented a kind of smart glass to achieve this eco-friendly effect.
The invention relies on tiny silver structures called silver nanorings, which are fixed inside the glass. When strong sunlight meets these tiny rings, they respond by blocking unnecessary heat from passing through the glass. The stronger the sunlight becomes, the more heat it can block. Most surprisingly, the entire physical reaction continues naturally without using electricity.
With this smart glass, modern buildings can cut down energy use effectively. The material keeps indoor spaces cool in a natural way, reducing the use of air conditioners. Meanwhile, decreased energy use contributes to fewer carbon emissions (排放), bringing huge environmental benefits.
However, the new technology isn’t fully developed for the market yet. For one thing, the smart glass functions perfectly under specific weather conditions, and researchers are determined to help it better adapt to different climates. For another, producing the silver nanorings still requires high costs now.
Even so, researchers keep positive and firmly believe that these difficulties will be overcome in the near future. If the technology is widely applied, smart glass will be popular in offices, living buildings and even vehicles, creating an energy-saving world with zero electricity waste for temperature control.
8. Why does the author mention air-conditioning devices?
A. To offer guidance on using air-conditioning.
B. To criticize people for wasting energy.
C. To show the problem of large glass buildings.
D. To compare different cooling methods.
9. How does smart glass work?
A. It relies on huge structures. B. It darkens by using electricity.
C. It turns sunlight into power. D. It keeps unwanted heat outdoors.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. Where smart glass can be applied. B. When smart glass works perfectly.
C. Why smart glass isn’t ready for sale. D. What makes smart glass expensive.
11. Which best describes the researchers’ attitude towards the future of smart glass?
A. Doubtful. B. Hopeful. C. Uncertain. D. Uninterested.
D
The world is facing a significant challenge, with about 2.2 billion people lacking access to safe drinking water. However, there is wonderful news on the horizon! Nobel Prize-winning professor Omar Yaghi has developed an innovative device that offers a promising solution by collecting water directly from the air to create clean drinking water.
Remarkably, this device works even in the harshest environments, including deserts, as has been proved during recent tests in the intense heat of Death Valley. Professor Yaghi, honored with the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, believes that this incredible invention has the potential to “change the world”, particularly for those living in drought-stricken areas and for communities affected by natural disasters.

In Orchestra class, we had on Fridays something called Chair Challenge. You could challenge the next higher-up chair. The teacher selected a passage from the music and the person you were challenging would play it first — then you would play it. The teacher would determine which of you won.
If you won, you switched (交换) places with the loser and moved up one chair. And at the end of December, whoever was first-chair violin, first-chair viola and first-chair cello (大提琴) would play the three separate solos (独奏) in the big New Year Concert.
Hearing this I was determined to be the one who played the cello solo in the New Year Concert. I was second-chair, third-cello. In order for me to become first-chair, first-cello I would need to do five Chair Challenges — and win all five! And I only had six weeks to do it.
The school allowed us to take instruments home on weekends. I decided to take my cello home and practice hard. So every single Friday and then again on Monday, for six weeks I carried this big cello case onto and off the bus before and after school. Then I went home and practiced. I practiced any music we were playing in class. And I sounded terrible.
But I kept at it. And then a funny thing happened around the second week. I wasn’t sounding that terrible anymore. And I realized I was getting better.
The first Chair Challenge the following Friday was a nervous affair. My hands were shaking badly. But when I finished the teacher smiled and said, “Challenge successful — switch chairs.” I felt excited.
I didn’t dare tell anyone about my goal. I knew they’d tell me it was impossible.
The girl who was first-chair, first-cello, Patricia, had been playing for years! Surely, to unseat Patricia would be very difficult.
But I kept practicing and winning my challenges, week after week — until it was the last Friday of December. I was now second-chair, first-cello. The teacher asked if there were any Chair Challenges. Patricia turned to me and laughed. “Well ...?” she said.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

My Experience Using Body Language
I’d like to share a memorable experience about the power of body language.
Last month, my friend was giving a presentation but suddenly forgot his words. He looked very nervous. I didn’t want to interrupt him by speaking. Instead, I made eye contact, gave him a warm smile, and nodded slightly to show my support and encouragement. Seeing this, he took a deep breath, smiled back, and confidently continued his talk.
This experience taught me that a simple, kind gesture can sometimes be more powerful and comforting than words. Body language is truly a universal and silent communicator that connects our hearts.
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
“Challenge!” I called out. Everyone laughed and cheered. The teacher pulled out two pieces of music. Patricia went first, being the challenged, and she played the passage beautifully. Only one little mistake. Then it was my turn. I was unfamiliar with this piece, but I’d been practicing, and my sight-reading had improved so much that I was confident I could do well. I took a deep breath and began. I played that passage so smoothly that it was like I’d been playing it all my life.
The class cheered and clapped. I was surprised. No one had ever clapped after a Chair Challenge. Even Patricia was clapping! The teacher had a smile as he nodded. “Challenge successful, switch. And, congratulations, First-Chair, First-Cello.” It turned out that the piece he had given us to play was the actual cello solo for the New Year Concert. I learned, from my personal experiences, that you can achieve what you set out to complete.

C
【答案】8.C 9.D 10.C 11.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章围绕无需用电的自调光智能玻璃展开,作答时应结合篇章结构和文本证据。
【解析】
8.推理判断题。根据第一段“Too much sunlight passes through the glass, causing indoor temperatures to rise greatly during hot summers. To keep a comfortable indoor temperature, air-conditioning (空调) devices have to work continuously, consuming a lot of electric energy.(过多的阳光透过玻璃,导致炎热的夏天室内温度大幅上升。为了保持舒适的室内温度,空调设备必须持续运行,消耗大量电能)”可知,作者提到空调设备是为了说明大型玻璃建筑存在的问题,即因阳光透过玻璃带来的高能耗问题。
9.细节理解题。根据第三段“When strong sunlight meets these tiny rings, they respond by blocking unnecessary heat from passing through the glass.(当强烈的阳光照射到这些小环时,它们会做出反应,阻挡不必要的热量透过玻璃)”可知,智能玻璃是通过将多余热量阻挡在室外来工作的。

Yaghi’s journey to this invention was shaped by his own experiences growing up in a poor community in Jordan, where he often faced challenges in accessing running water and electricity. He fondly recalls the excitement and urgency in his neighborhood when the announcement came that water would be available, highlighting the importance of this precious resource.
Thanks to its green power source, the device can operate independently of traditional power grids, making it ideal for remote villages, disaster-stricken areas, and drought-affected regions that lack proper water systems. Its design offers a local solution, perfect for situations where transporting water or constructing pipelines is not accessible.
“On climate, the hour for collective action has already arrived. The science is here,” Professor Yaghi stated. “What we need now is the courage to handle these challenges with determination, ensuring that we leave behind for the next generation not only solutions for carbon capture (碳捕集) but also a planet that fulfills their dreams and hopes.”
The future is bright, and with such innovative minds like Yaghi leading the charge, we can look forward to a world where clean water is accessible to all, no matter where they may live.

第二节(满分25分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
“Challenge!” I called out.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

【导语】①由第一段首句内容““挑战!”我喊道。”可知,第一段可描写Patricia演奏之后,作者开始演奏,并演奏得很好。
【详解】
