Ramla Ali, Somali-born boxer, model and ambassador of United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) , has spent her life fighting, first for survival, then for change. From escaping Somalia’s civil war to stepping into the Olympic ring, she’s turned her own story of struggle into a powerful mission to uplift others.
Following her brother’s death in the chaos of war, Ali and her family spent a year as refugees (难民) before resettling in London, where Ali chanced upon boxing. What began as a means to prevent herself from being bullied has matured into both a lifelong calling and a source of comfort and a passion. Her amateur career saw her claim England’s National, Great British, and 2019 African Zone Featherweight titles. In 2021 she made history as Somalia’s first Olympic boxer, a symbol of perseverance and determination.
Guided by the belief “You can’t be what you can’t see — if people witness my journey, they may dare to dream too”, Ali journeyed back to Kenya and visited the Dadaab refugee camp with UNICEF in 2025, during which she joined the Kasarani Sasa recycling group, a collective of over 200 refugee women waste pickers, helping sort plastic and cardboard. The program provides childcare, informal education for kids and safe income for struggling mothers. “Witnessing the things firsthand struck me. This could have been me, had I not left. It’s heartbreaking — you want to help everyone, but there’re so many,” Ali said.
At FilmAid Kenya, a learning program teaching the young displaced filmmaking and storytelling, Ali shared how education transformed her life with the students, many of whom dreamed of careers in medicine or psychology, despite hardships. Though moved by a teenager who desired to be a film director after her first exposure to a camera, Ali feared the program, a lifeline for refugee children’s dreams, was at risk from global aid cuts.
Deeply concerned about this, Ali partnered with UNICEF to provide sustained financial backing for refugee children’s education. Meanwhile, she’s expanded her free women’s boxing club worldwide. She made an appeal, saying “If my story can help just one girl see hope, my efforts will be fully worth it.” Ali’s power as a role model stimulates numerous disadvantaged youth’s ambition, lifting them out of despair and into dignity.
What initially drew Ramla Ali to boxing?
A.The need for self- defense. B.The desire for pleasure.
C.The pursuit of an athletic career. D.The influence of her brother.
25.What did Ali do in 2025?
A.She set up a recycling program for refugee women.
B.She collected waste materials for UNICEF in person.
C.She organized childcare services in the Dadaab camp.
D.She dedicated herself to a women’s recycling group in Kenya.
26.What was Ali’s major concern about the program FilmAid Kenya?
A.Qualification. B.Accessibility. C.Funding. D.Equipment.
27.Which of the following best summarizes Ramla Ali’s life journey?
A.From a refugee to an advocate. B.From isolation to connection.
C.From ignorance to wisdom. D.From a victim to a victor.
(本题10分)We all know that a powerful body posture may help people feel more confident. But will it work on students? A new study by researchers from the Martin Luther University (MLU) of Halle-Wittenberg is carried out to find the connection. And it does provide evidence that simple body postures can help students feel better in school.
Some body postures don’t need further explanation. When a man sits with his arms crossed behind his head, resting his feet on a table, he is probably feeling very self-confident. Arms folded in front of one’s body and a bent back, on the other hand, typically mean anxiety and insecurity. “Body language is not just about expressing feelings, it can also have a great influence on how a person feels,” explains Robert Körner from the Institute of Psychology at MLU.
Research on powerful body postures tries to find out the extent to which a certain body posture might influence a person’s feelings and self-confidence. Up to now, most of the research has been about studying the effects on adults. Körner’s study is the first to examine children. “Children from the age of five are able to recognize and understand the body postures of others,” the professor adds.
The researchers carried out their experiment with 108 fourth graders. One group was to assume two open postures for one minute each. The other group posed with their arms folded in front of them and their heads down. The children then finished a series of psychological tests. The children who had assumed an open posture showed better moods and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were particularly manifest when it came to questions concerning school. “Here, powerful body postures had the strongest effect on the children’s self-confidence,” says Körner.
“Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Körner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term. Serious problems or mental illness must be treated by trained professionals.
How does Körner feel about the short-term effects of powerful postures?
A.He thinks they are useless.
B.He believes they are significant enough for teachers to adopt in class.
C.He argues they are too strong and harmful.
D.He claims they last for years.
What is the new research on powerful body postures mainly about?
A.What the most popular postures are.
B.How children’s postures differ from adults’.
C.Why body language can express a person’s feelings.
D.What effects postures have on students’ feelings.
What does the underlined word “manifest” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Strange. B.Obvious.
C.Unclear. D.Manageable.
What is Körner’s attitude to teachers’ applying the findings in teaching?
A.Worried. B.Doubtful.
C.Objective. D.Supportive.
(本题10分)Since ancient times, humans have sought ways to detect deception (欺骗). Physical punishment was once useful but later rejected as victims would lie to end pain. This led to the search for non-forceful method, giving rise to the study of body language, that is, the nonverbal clues that may reveal deception.
Observing changes in body language is as important as the actual gestures themselves. When a person is asked to talk about something they want to avoid, they may slide backward into the chair they are sitting in. I have seen people slide the entire chair backward against a wall to create distance. Crossing the legs or arms is an unconscious defensive gesture that might indicate deception. If the interviewer gives hypothetical motives or excuses for an incident, the interviewee will frequently nod the head up and down in agreement. On the other hand, forced efforts to maintain eye contact or intentionally invading the personal space of the interviewer might indicate an effort to appear truthful when telling a lie.
While observing body language can be a good investigative tool, I feel the necessity to make this point. Body language is not an exact science. It is a good tool to show you are on the right track. However, there are various reasons why it might not be accurate. People from different cultures have gestures that might indicate deception when it is just a normal gesture. People with mental health or drug issues might give indicators that give you the wrong idea. In certain cultures, people are taught not to make eye contact with an authority figure such as a police officer or your boss. However, a person doing that might just be nervous or suffer from some type of PTSD
My advice is to try and know your subject. Try to know how they react during normal conversation and be familiar with their culture and how they were raised. Never pass judgement on body language alone. It is just one piece of the investigative puzzle.
What is the function of paragraph 1?
A.To introduce the topic of body language.
B.To trace the development of detection methods.
C.To recommend the use of a non-forceful method.
D.To explain the abandonment of physical punishment.
What does the gesture of sliding back into the chair indicate?
A.Feeling fear. B.Avoiding a topic.
C.Expressing agreement. D.Hiding the truth.
How does the author support the point that body language might not be accurate?
A.By using statistical data from research papers.
B.By providing a series of explanatory statements.
C.By questioning the morality of using body language.
D.By comparing body language across different cultures.
What is the best title for the text?
A.Body Language: Not an Exact Science for Lie Detection
B.Detected Deception: Why Body Language Always Works
C.Body Language: The Most Reliable Way to Detect Deception
D.Detected Deception: Limitations of Nonverbal Communication
(本题12.5分)Communication begins long before you open your mouth. The way you stand, the position of your arms, and your facial expressions all tell a story that can be read immediately. By adopting the following habits, you can project confidence, openness, and charm with your nonverbal cues.
When you are truly engaged in a movie or a game, you lean forward. The same applies to conversation. Slightly leaning your upper body toward the speaker is a loud nonverbal cue that says, “I am interested in what you are saying.” 37(2.5分) Just be mindful of personal space, because a deep lean can feel like impoliteness.
Find the eye contact “sweet spot”.
38(2.5分) However, there is a fine line between “engaged” and “uncomfortable”. Unbroken staring can cause a fight-or-flight response in others. To avoid this, try the 50/70 rule: maintain eye contact for 50% of the time while you are speaking and maintain eye contact for 70% of the time while you are listening.
Adopt an open posture.
When you cross your arms or legs, you are physically protecting your vital organs. 39(2.5分) To appear more approachable, keep your chest open. Let your arms hang relaxed at your sides and angle your body toward the person you are speaking with.
Subtly (巧妙地) mirror their movements.
Have you ever noticed that when you are really clicking with someone, you naturally start doing the same things they are? This is called mirroring, and it creates an unconscious sense of familiarity and trust. You can intentionally use this by reflecting your conversation partner’s posture or gestures. The warning: The key word is subtle.
A.Lean in to listen.
B.Be an active observer with a deep lean in.
C.This closes the physical distance and builds connection.
D.You want to mirror their energy, not copy their every move.
E.Looking someone in the eye conveys confidence and engagement.
F.Mirroring can make the interaction more genuine when done frequently.
G.While comfortable, this primitive defensive position signals to others that you are closed off.

Meta communication is like a secret language that we all use without 56(1.5分) (realize) it. Think of it as the “how” of what we say, not just the “what”. When we talk, we don’t just use words. We use our tone, our body language, 57(1.5分) even the pauses between words. All of these things send messages. That’s meta communication.
Let me share an example. I once had an 58(1.5分) (employ) who always said, “Sure, no problem” whenever I gave her a task. It sounded great, didn’t it? But her slumped shoulders (下垂的肩膀) and quiet sigh told 59(1.5分) different story. Her words were positive, but her body language revealed she was stressed. This is meta communication in action. The literal meaning of her words was positive, but the real message 60(1.5分) (hide) in how she said it.
Understanding meta communication can make you a better leader, friend and problem solver, 61(1.5分) helps you understand what people really mean, not just what they say. So next time you are in a conversation, pay attention 62(1.5分) more than just the words. Listen to the tone, watch the body language and 63(1.5分) (face) expressions, and trust your instincts (直觉). You might be surprised by what you discover!
Everyone conveys (传递) their messages 64(1.5分) (different). Use this knowledge to understand others better and to express 65(1.5分) (you) more clearly. That’s the real power of meta communication.

When I was in Grade One, most of my classmates didn’t like to play with me because I was always shy and silent. However, I always got high grades in both exams and activities. Gradually, I got the respect of my classmates. And my teachers repeatedly praised me and asked me to assist my classmates in their study. Besides, there were various competitions in my school and I was always chosen as the representative of our class.
However, life is not always happy. There are times when we experience ups and downs. When I was in Grade Three, a student named Vannilyn came to our school, and she was placed in the class next to mine. Months passed and the result of the mid-term examination was released. I was still the No. 1 in my class and I heard that Vannilyn was the No. 1 in her class. However, I just ignored her and in my thought, I was still superior because I was a seasoned pupil.
There were times when I didn’t want to open my books to read and study for our next day’s lesson. When I did my homework, I became careless and I didn’t even mind whether my handwriting looked beautiful or not. What’s worse, I gradually became addicted to computer games. And because of that, my teachers began to criticise me and what made me angry was that they always mentioned Vannilyn in front of me!
I got annoyed every time my teachers compared me with Vannilyn. I was discouraged and no longer followed their instructions. At the end of the first term, the principal’s assistant announced the final examination result, and I still ranked No. 1. Therefore, I became prouder and told myself that I would still be the best student even if I didn’t study hard.
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
I was overconfident and didn’t pay much attention to my study.

W: To be honest, neither will help you connect with an audience. You can work with an outline and use cards to remind you.
M: Oh, that makes more sense. Anything else?
W: If I were you, I’d try to be more active and use hand gestures.
M: I suppose I could be more aware of my body language.
W: Right. Also, it wouldn’t kill you to add in a funny story or two. The audience will be very interested.
M: Oh, I see. Thanks, honey.

Who is the speaker probably talking to?
A.College applicants. B.New employees. C.Job seekers.
【答案】18.C 19.A 20.C
M: So let's go over the key points again. First clothes. You need to make sure you wear the right kind of uniform. Perhaps your suit is perfect for a graduation ceremony, but is it the right one for work? Select the clothes that match the look you want. If you need to buy some new clothes then get used to wearing them for at least two days so that you don’t feel too awkward or self conscious. It’s okay if they are not brand new, but it’s not if they limit your performance. Next remember, you never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Walk in confidently and look as if you really want the job. When you sit down, sit up straight, keep your hands open and relaxed on your lap, don’t cross your arms or legs. However, a good first impression is not enough. You need to be smart when answering questions. If asked about the reason for quitting your last job, never criticize your past employers or bosses. It’s the kiss of death. Try to answer from a perspective like your personal development. It’ll show that you have matured and are ready to learn.

根据最后一段中的““Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Körner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term.(“教师们可以尝试看看这种方法是否对学生有帮助。”然而,科尔纳表示,对这种技术的期望应该适度。其效果只是短期的) ”可知,科尔纳认为有力姿势的短期效果值得教师在课堂上尝试,同时提醒期望需适度。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第一段中的“But will it work on students? A new study by researchers from the Martin Luther University (MLU) of Halle-Wittenberg is carried out to find the connection. And it does provide evidence that simple body postures can help students feel better in school.(但这对学生有用吗?哈勒 - 维滕贝格马丁・路德大学的研究人员开展了一项新研究,旨在寻找这种联系。研究确实提供了证据,表明简单的身体姿势能帮助学生在学校感觉更好)”可知,这项新研究主要关注姿势对学生情绪的影响。故选D项。
30.词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“The children who had assumed an open posture showed better moods and reported higher self-confidence than the children in the other group. The effects were particularly manifest when it came to questions concerning school.(采取开放姿势的孩子比另一组孩子表现出更好的情绪和更高的自信心。在涉及学校的问题上,这种效果尤为manifest)”可知,前文已说明开放姿势的积极效果,后文强调在学校相关问题上效果更突出,因此manifest意为“明显的”,与obvious同义。故选B项。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Teachers could try and see whether this method helps their students.” However, Körner states that expectations about this technique should be mild. The effects were only short-term.
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.B 35.A
根据第一段“Since ancient times, humans have sought ways to detect deception (欺骗). Physical punishment was once useful but later rejected as victims would lie to end pain. This led to the search for non-forceful method, giving rise to the study of body language, that is, the nonverbal clues that may reveal deception. (自古以来,人类就一直在探寻识别欺骗的方法。曾经,体罚曾起到一定作用,但后来因其会导致受害者撒谎以减轻痛苦而被摒弃。这一现象促使人们寻求非暴力的方法,从而引发了对肢体语言的研究,即那些可能揭示欺骗行为的非言语线索。)”可知,第一段主要作用是引出主题。故选A。
根据第二段“When a person is asked to talk about something they want to avoid, they may slide backward into the chair they are sitting in. (当有人被要求谈论自己想要回避的话题时,他们可能会向后靠在他们所坐的椅子上。)”可知,向后靠回到椅子上的这个动作意味着试图回避某个话题。故选B。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段“People from different cultures have gestures that might indicate deception when it is just a normal gesture. People with mental health or drug issues might give indicators that give you the wrong idea. In certain cultures, people are taught not to make eye contact with an authority figure such as a police officer or your boss. However, a person doing that might just be nervous or suffer from some type of PTSD
根据倒数第二段“While observing body language can be a good investigative tool, I feel the necessity to make this point. Body language is not an exact science. It is a good tool to show you are on the right track. However, there are various reasons why it might not be accurate. (虽然观察肢体语言可以成为一种有效的调查手段,但我认为有必要强调这一点。肢体语言并非一门精确的科学。它能表明你正在正确的方向上前进。然而,它也可能存在一些不准确之处,原因有很多。)”结合全文围绕“身体语言可用于测谎,但它并非精确科学”这一核心展开,既说明了其作用,也强调了其局限性。选项A“身体语言:并非精确的测谎科学”最符合文章标题。故选A。
【答案】36.A 37.C 38.E 39.G 40.D
根据后文“When you are truly engaged in a movie or a game, you lean forward. The same applies to conversation. Slightly leaning your upper body toward the speaker is a loud nonverbal cue that says, “I am interested in what you are saying.”(当你真正沉浸在一部电影或游戏中时,你会身体前倾。这同样适用于对话。微微将上半身倾向说话者是一个强烈的非语言信号,表示“我对你说的话感兴趣”。)”可知,本段主要讲述“身体前倾倾听”这一习惯。A选项“Lean in to listen.(前倾身体去倾听。)”
37.根据前文“Slightly leaning your upper body toward the speaker is a loud nonverbal cue that says, “I am interested in what you are saying.”(微微将上半身倾向说话者是一个强烈的非语言信号,表示“我对你说的话感兴趣”。)”以及后文“Just be mindful of personal space, because a deep lean can feel like impoliteness.(只是要注意个人空间,因为过度前倾可能会显得不礼貌。)” C选项“This closes the physical distance and builds connection.(这缩短了身体距离并建立了联系。)”
以及后文“However, there is a fine line between “engaged” and “uncomfortable”.(然而,“投入”和“不舒服”之间只有一线之隔。)” E选项“Looking someone in the eye conveys confidence and engagement.(看着别人的眼睛传递出自信和投入。)”
39.根据前文“When you cross your arms or legs, you are physically protecting your vital organs.(当你交叉双臂或双腿时,你是在物理上保护你的重要器官。)”以及后文“To appear more approachable, keep your chest open.(为了显得更平易近人,保持胸部敞开。)” G选项“While comfortable, this primitive defensive position signals to others that you are closed off.(虽然舒服,但这种原始的防御姿势向他人传递出你封闭自我的信号。)”
40.根据前文“The warning: The key word is subtle.(警告:关键词是“巧妙”。)” D选项“You want to mirror their energy, not copy their every move.(你要模仿的是他们的能量,而不是复制他们的每一个动作。)”

The Power of Body Language
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
The Power of Body Language
Body language plays a vital role in our daily communication. It not only helps express our feelings and attitudes but also makes what we say more vivid and convincing. For example, a warm smile conveys friendliness, and steady eye contact builds trust.
However, body language varies across cultures. In some countries, a thumbs-up indicates approval, but in others, it may be offensive. Similarly, nodding usually means “yes” in many cultures, yet in parts of Greece and Bulgaria, it can mean “no”. Therefore, understanding these differences is key to effective cross-cultural communication.

注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

Three days later, the result of the English Spelling competition was announced.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
I was overconfident and didn’t pay much attention to my study. Believing that I would always be the best in studies, whether I studied hard or not, I continued to play computer games and did what I thought was fun and interesting. At the beginning of the second term, our school organised an English Spelling Competition, in which there were six participants, including Vannilyn and me. When looking at Vannilyn in the competition room, I suddenly felt not so confident of myself. Three minutes later, the competition started.
Paragraph 2:
Three days later, the result of the English Spelling competition was announced. I was shocked to know that I only took the third place, with Vannilyn being the first. I sat on my chair, tears rolling down my face. After calming down, I began to reflect on what I had been doing those days. How I regretted the days that had been wasted playing games but should have been spent on my studies. I know better the saying “Pride goes before a fall” through my own experience.
学习好:be the best in studies/get best grades in class
组织比赛:organize a competition/hold a competition
流眼泪:tears running down my face/my eyes watering

2】I was shocked to know that I only took the third place, with Vannilyn being the first.(运用了that引导的宾语从句和with的复合结构)
