一、阅读理解
Passage A
The search for identity is a central theme in many works of literature, and perhaps nowhere is it more
potently explored than in the coming-of-age novel. These narratives often follow a protagonist's
journey from innocence to experience,a path fraught with confusion, rebellion, and ultimately,self-
discovery.The protagonist,typically an adolescent,must grapple with societal expectations,familial
pressures, and internal conflicts to forge a unique sense of self.
One such novel is J.D.Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye,where the teenage Holden Caulfield
navigates the hypocrisy of the adult world he sees around him.His rebellion against "phoniness"is
not merely teenage angst but a profound struggle to preserve his own authenticity in a world he finds
increasingly artificial. He clings to the image of being the "catcher in the rye,"a protector of
childhood innocence, which symbolizes his desire to halt the painful process of growing up and losing
his pure,untainted identity.
In contrast, the search for identity can also be a collective experience, deeply rooted in cultural heritage.
Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior explores the struggle of a Chinese-American girl
growing up between two cultures. The protagonist is haunted by the ghostly stories of her mother's
China, stories that both define and constrain her.Her joumey is not about rejecting one identity for
another, but about reconciling the conflicting narratives of her family's past with her present life in
America. She must "translate"these cultural ghosts into a language that allows her to exist as a
whole person, integrating her Chinese heritage into her American identity.
Furthermore, literature also examines how external forces, like history and trauma, can shape identity
Toni Morrison's Beloved tells the story of Sethe,a former slave haunted by the ghost of the daughter
she killed to save from a life of slavery.Sethe's identity is fractured by the unthinkable trauma of her
past. The novel suggests that reclaiming one's identity requires confronting and "remembering"these
painful memories, not burying them.It is a process of piecing together a shattered self,a journey as
much about the past as it is about the future.
Ultimately, the literature of identity teaches us that the self is not a fixed, static entity but a dynamic
and often contradictory construct. It is shaped by our choices, our relationships, our memories, and the
stories we tell ourselves about who we are.By witnessing these literary journeys,we are invited to
reflect on our own, finding resonance in the universal struggle to answer the question:"Who am I?"
()1.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To compare different genres of coming-of-age novels
B.To introduce the theme of identity search in literature.
C.To argue that identity is a fixed and unchanging concept.
D.To criticize the way authors portray adolescent rebellion.
()2.In The Catcher in the Rye,Holden Caulfield's rebellion is primarily driven by his desire to:
A.protect his younger sister from the adult world.
B.reject the hypocrisy he perceives in society.
C.prove his independence from his parents.
D.escape from the pressures of school life.
()3.The word "reconciling"in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to:
A.separating
B.describing
C.balancing
D.ignoring
()4.According to the passage, what does the novel Beloved suggest about the relationship between
trauma and identity?
A.Trauma should be forgotten to achieve a stable identity.
B.Confronting painful memories is essential for identity reconstruction.
C.Identity is permanently damaged by historical trauma
D.The past has no significant impact on one's present identity.
Passage B
The act of naming,whether of a person,a place,or a thing,is a fundamental act of creation and
control.In literature,it becomes a powerful tool,instantly imbuing a character with a set of
expectations,a social status,or even a destiny. The name we are given is often our first identity,a label
that precedes us and shapes how the world perceives us.Authors use this to their advantage, crafting
names that are symbolic, ironic,or predictive, thereby layering meaning into their narratives.
In Charles Dickens'Great Expectations, the protagonist Pip is a diminutive version of his given name,
Philip Pinrip. This nickname,"Pip,"sounds small and insignificant, reflecting his low social standing
at the beginning of the novel. His joumney is one of becoming,of trying to grow into a "gentleman"
and shed the identity his name implies. The story follows his struggle to reconcile the simple boy he
was with the sophisticated man he aspires to be,and ultimately,to accept the core of his true self that
his name,in its own way, always represented.
Conversely, parents might choose names with specific aspirations. In Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club,
the Chinese immigrant mothers give their American-born daughters names that are a blend of hope and
history.The name "Jing-mei"caries a weight of meaning,connecting the daughter to a half-sister
she has never met in China. This name is not just a label;it is a "hook"that links the present to a
past she initially tries to escape. The act of learning to appreciate and accept her name becomes
synonymous with her acceptance of her dual identity.
Furthermore, the rejection of a name can be a powerful act of rebellion. In Khaled Hosseini's The Kite
Runner, the protagonist Amir is haunted by his past and his name is tied to a legacy of betrayal. While
he doesn't literally change his name, his joumney to redemption is a symbolic attempt to unburden
himself from the weight of what his name represents. He eventually takes on the role of a baba(father)
to his nephew,Sohrab, thereby forging a new identity through responsibility and love,a new name
defined by action rather than by the sins of his past.
The power of a name in literature, therefore,is immense. It can be a cage or a key,a source of shame
or a badge of honor. It can be a destiny to fulfill or a history to overcome.By paying close attention to
how and why characters are named, readers gain a deeper understanding of their inner conflicts, their
social positions, and their ultimate journeys of self-discovery.The name is often the first clue and the
final riddle in the literature of identity.
()1.What is the central argument of the passage?
A.Most authors are careless when choosing names for their characters.
B.Names in literature are merely functional labels for characters.
C.Names in literature often cary symbolic and thematic significance.
D.The choice of a character's name is always based on cultural tradition.
()2.How does the name "Pip"in Great Expectations relate to the protagonist's joumey?
A.It reveals his secret ambition from the beginning.
B.It shows his social status, which he seeks to change.
C.It indicates his final success in becoming a gentleman.
D.It is a name he adopts to hide his true identity.
()3.In The Joy Luck Club, the name "Jing-mei"primarily serves to:
A.make the daughter feel proud of her new American life.
B.reflect a simple and popular American naming trend.
C.connect the daughter to her Chinese heritage and family.
D.confuse the daughter about her cultural background.
()4.The passage suggests that the act of rejecting one's name can be a form of.
A.self-destruction
B.rebellion and identity redefinition
C.passive acceptance of fate
D.honoring one's ancestors

三、阅读短文回答问题
The modem world offers a dizzying array of choices for identity formation.Gone are the days when
one's path was largely predetermined by family, community,or social class.Today, individuals are
tasked with the project of "self-creation,"a process that is both liberating and anxiety-inducing.This
freedom, however, comes with the burden of constant decision-making:what career to pursue, where
to live, what values to hold, and how to present oneself to the world.
Social media has further complicated this landscape.Platforms like Instagram and TikTok offer curated
spaces where people can present idealized versions of their lives. This "performative self"often
differs from the private self, creating a potential for dissonance. The pressure to accumulate likes,
followers, and positive feedback can steer a person's identity toward being a brand rather than a
genuine self.We start to define ourselves by our digital footprint, measuring our worth in quantitative
metncs.
However, this same digital space also provides unprecedented opportunities for exploration. An
introvert can find a community of fellow writers online.A young person from a small town can
explore different subcultures and ideologies. In this sense, the internet can act as a vast, interactive
library of potential selves. The challenge, therefore,is not the lack of options but the ability to navigate
them with critical awareness. To find an authentic identity in this context, one must cultivate a strong
sense of internal compass-a set of personal values that can guide choices and filter the noise of
external validation.
1.According to the passage, what is the main burden of "self-creation"in the modemn world?
2.How does social media create a "performative self"
3.What positive aspect does the passage mention about digital spaces for identity exploration?
4.According to the passage, what is crucial for finding an authentic identity in the digital age?
5.What does the phrase "internal compass"in the last paragraph most likely refer to?
