Starter Unit 3 Welcome! Lesson 3 Pronunciation & Project
Teaching Objectives
1. Master the pronunciation rules of vowels a, e, i, o, u in closed syllables and read common monosyllabic words containing these vowels correctly.
2. Design and draw a personal farm based on group discussion outlines.
3. Describe self-designed farms using unit vocabulary and target sentence patterns.
4. Explore and summarize the differences between a rural courtyard and a farm.
Teaching Content
Part 1: Pronunciation Section
This phonics part focuses on the short sounds of the five vowels a, e, i, o, u in closed syllables, followed by summary and oral practice.
1. Activity 1 uses charts to list five groups of closed-syllable words with corresponding phonetic symbols. Students discover short vowel rules through listening, viewing and imitation.
2. Activity 2 provides extra word lists. Students categorize words into open-syllable and closed-syllable groups after listening, forming a full understanding of vowel pronunciation rules.
3. Activity 3 is word reading practice to help students identify vowels and read words following phonics rules accurately.
4. Activity 4 offers a rhythmic nursery rhyme filled with open and closed syllable monosyllabic words. Students listen and recite to improve pronunciation fluency.
Part 2: Project Task
The project requires students to design and introduce their own farms, developing imagination, oral expression and hands-on drawing skills.
1. Three guiding questions set the core writing & speaking points: What is on the farm? How many are there? What colors are they? These cover all key knowledge of the unit.
2. A blank countryside background picture is provided for students to draw their ideal farms. They can add local cultural features in the design.
3. Students introduce their hand-drawn farms logically with the vocabulary and sentence patterns learned in this unit.

Students’ Activities
Teaching Purposes
2 mins
1. Review animal words from Section A’s main picture.
2. Match vowels a/e/i/o/u with their phonetic symbols in a "Find a home for animals" game.
Activate prior knowledge by reviewing scene vocabulary; intuitively introduce closed syllable sounds for later phonics learning.
5 mins
3. Learn the spelling features of closed syllables and learn to recognize them under teacher’s guidance.
4. Listen, observe and imitate to conclude the short vowel rules in closed syllables.
Help students distinguish closed syllable structures; guide them to summarize phonics rules from example words.
3 mins
5. Listen to recordings and sort words into open or closed syllable groups.
6. Read all words in Activity 3 following phonics rules.
Compare open and closed syllable differences; check students’ command of vowel pronunciation.
5 mins
7. Observe the illustration in Activity 4 and complete mind maps.
8. Listen to the nursery rhyme and pick out three sets of rhyming words.
9. Imitate line by line first, then recite the whole rhyme together.
10. Discuss in groups the function of rhymes in chants.
Stimulate interest with vivid pictures; build awareness of rhyming; consolidate vowel sounds; help students feel rhythmic language.
5 mins
11 Group survey & discussion:
(1) Tick animals and crops that can be seen on a farm and discuss answers in groups.
(2) Fill in charts to sort out differences between rural courtyards and farms.
Recycle farm vocabulary; train students to compare two scenes from multiple dimensions.
8 mins
12. Discuss in groups: imagine your own farm, record animals, plants, quantities and colors.
13. Draw animals, plants and buildings on the countryside template from Activity 2.
Inspire creative thinking; turn verbal ideas into visual drawings to prepare for oral presentation.
3 mins
14. Write a short passage to describe the self-designed farm using unit vocabulary and target sentences.
Train logical written expression for scene description.
5 mins
15. Revise the writing by self-check checklist in groups.
Improve accuracy of vocabulary and sentence patterns.
2 mins
16. Each group sends a representative to introduce their farm to the whole class in order.
Develop public speaking and comprehensive oral competence.
2 mins
17. Peer evaluation: score other groups’ presentations with evaluation forms.
Cultivate objective judgment and constructive feedback skills.
Homework
1. Listen to and recite the nursery rhyme on Page 15 repeatedly.
2. Design three interview questions and ask classmates about their ideal farms.
Homework Purpose
Strengthen phonetic sense through chant reading; create real communicative chances to consolidate unit sentence patterns and broaden students’ understanding of farm scenes.
