Teaching Objectives

1.               Use greetings and parting lines appropriately and politely to start and carry on simple daily conversations.

2.               Master the structure of English names and make simple comparisons with Chinese names.

3.               Greet and respond properly according to different listeners (strangers vs. acquaintances).

4.               Write short dialogues between strangers and acquaintances neatly and standardly.

Teaching Content

This lesson focuses on how to start and continue small talks. Two sample dialogues with different scenarios are provided in the textbook.

Dialogue 1 (Between two new classmates / strangers)

Teng Fei uses the polite sentence May I have your name? to ask for Emma’s name, which is a formal way to start a chat with strangers. After telling her full

name, Emma invites Teng Fei to call her given name only, a Western custom to show closeness. At the end of the talk, Teng Fei says Nice to meet you, a formal closing remark suitable for first meetings.

Dialogue 2 (Between old friends Helen and Yaming)

They use casual short greetings like Hello / Hi. They ask about each other’s daily life with How are you? And you? to keep the conversation going. When they have to leave in a hurry, they say Goodbye / Bye to each other, common parting words for close friends.

Compared with Section A, this section enriches students’ expression bank:

•                     Opening greetings: Good morning, Hello, Hi, How are you

•                     Closing sentences: Nice to meet you, Goodbye, Bye
The textbook adopts a spiral learning design, repeating and upgrading core expressions to help students consolidate and improve oral communication skills.
