Learning English Beyond the Classroom
There are many ways of learning English. Our school newspaper did a survey on students’ after-class English learning activities, showing great differences in their choices.
From the chart we can see that the percentage of students who choose listening to English songs and watching English movies is respectively 65% and 50%. However, those choosing reading English books and visiting English learning websites only account for 18% and 12%.
While these entertaining methods are enjoyable, they may not be the most effective for language learning. To improve English more comprehensively, I suggest combining various methods. We can practise listening and pronunciation via songs and movies, and spare time for reading and online courses to boost reading ability. Only balanced learning methods can help us make steady progress.

W: Sure... What time is it? 11:10 a.m... I have a parent meeting in 20 minutes, but I’m free until then. Have a seat.
M: Thanks. I have a proposal to run by you. As you know, it’s been so wet recently that the kids haven’t been able to get outside for P.E.
W: Yes. It’s unfortunate we don’t have a bigger school gym.
M: Well, quite. And it worries me that the students aren’t exercising regularly. A middle-school teacher recently has become popular on social media for creating “desk dances” for students.
W: And you want to do the same?
M: Yeah. A five-minute “warm-up” dance at the start of each lesson will be a great way for students to exercise and release stress without leaving the classroom. And students can also do this on snowy and hot days in the future.
W: I think it’s a great idea! You have my permission to go ahead.

【原文】W: I need your advice about planning the school trip for our students. It’s important to make it enjoyable for everyone.
M: What are the key things you’re considering?
W: Well, some students use wheelchairs, so the place must be completely accessible. We also need quiet areas for anyone who struggles with loud environments.
M: That makes sense. Have you chosen a location yet?
W: I think so. There’s a local science museum which is quite suitable. It provides entry and a guided tour for just $10 per child.
M: That sounds reasonable. How many students are going?
W: Twenty students, and we also need two staff members for support. Staff tickets cost half the price of the children’s tickets.
M: And transport?
W: A bus costs $90 for the day, and that isn’t cheap. I need to double-check the budget, but I think it’ll work.
M: It sounds like you’ve got things covered. The kids will love it. Have you considered the needs of the students with eyesight problems?
W: Yes, but there aren’t any children who can’t see well going on this trip.

M: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to our school. My name is Andrew Brown. I’m a history teacher. I’ll give you a quick introduction to the school before I show you around. Our school is called a “free school”. This means that the pupils are free to choose what and how they want to learn.
The school opens at 9:00 am, but the children can arrive whenever they like. Most of them are in school by ten.
If you look through the door of that big room you’ll see those children reading and drawing there. Four of the older boys are now on their way to the Car-room to have their driving lessons. Several children are taking turns in the kitchen to help Miss Cabe with lunch. They all enjoy doing this. After lunch it’s someone else’s job to do the washing-up. This job is unpopular. After lunch the children go on with what they’ve been doing until 4:30. On Mondays and Thursdays the school is open in the evening until 9:00 pm.

In August, University of Alberta students successfully sent an experiment into space from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. The experiment, called the PEPPER-X project, is designed to study the interaction between space radiation (辐射) and the Earth. The team, made up of undergraduate and graduate students, spent 16 months preparing for the launch (发射) as part of NASA’s RockSat-X program. “This experiment was almost entirely built and tested by students,” explained project manager Erik Halliwell, a graduate student in the Faculty of Engineering.
For Halliwell, being a project manager on PEPPER-X provided important leadership opportunities. “It’s been really nice to work with people with different levels of experience. I have people who mentor (指导) me in my professional journey, and I was able to be that person for somebody else — to be the mentor that I would have wanted.”
Joyce Winterton, Senior Advisor from NASA, expressed what a pleasure it was having the team from Alberta participate in RockSat-X. “The PEPPER-X project team showed their professionalism throughout the process. The members of this team will be a great addition to the aerospace workforce.” Winterton said.
With a project like PEPPER-X, there are engineering objectives (目标) and there are science objectives. “The mission of this project is to build instruments that can function in space. But the purpose of training the students is for them to develop the skills needed to join the Canadian workforce in aerospace,” Halliwell said. “So we need to build the instruments, and we also need to train students. We did both and we nailed it.”
Looking ahead, the team is currently working through analyzing (分析) the data, which will take weeks or even months to fully process. They will then take the lessons learned and apply them as they develop similar instruments for a mission launching in 2027.

A.She expressed great expectation of RockSat-X.
B.She valued international teamwork in space exploration.
C.She felt pleased to be the mentor at the University of Alberta.
D.She thought highly of the students from the PEPPER-X project.
54.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined part “nailed it” in paragraph 4?
A.Retired. B.Appeared. C.Succeeded. D.Changed.
55.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The team’s next step in analyzing data and preparing for a future mission.

What does English mean to you? Endless new words, difficult grammar or sometimes strange pronunciation? Have you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
In a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brainpower. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter (大脑灰质). This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density (密度) in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists. It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and math skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible,” he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientist.

In 2010, the UN Department of Global Communications instituted language days for each of the organization’s six official languages. The goal was two-fold: 61 (celebrate) cultural diversity as well as to promote the equal use of all six 62 (tongue).

【答案】例文

56.The main subject talked about in this passage is _________.
A.Methods of learning a second language
B.how fast a person can learn a language
C.language can make your brain smarter
D.language learning and maths study
57.In the second paragraph, the writer mentions “exercise” in order to _________.
A.say language learning is hard work
B.prove that people needs more practice when learning a language
C.show the importance of using the language when you learn the language
D.show that language learning helps grey matter work well
58.The underlined word “bilingual” probably means _________.
A.a researcher on language learning
B.a person who can speak two languages
C.a person who is good at learning foreign languages
D.an active language learner
59.What did Professor Dylan say about having two languages?
A.It makes maths skills worse.
B.It makes the brain more flexible.
C.It makes pronunciation easier.
D.It makes people forget their first language.
60.In the last paragraph, the author wants to tell us that _________.
A.learning a second language is the same as studying maths
B.early learning of a second language helps you in studying other subjects
C.Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
