What else do you know about the types of mass media mentioned above?
I know that outdoor media is still quite popular but is becoming more digital and interactive. Print media seems to be on the decline as most people now prefer to search online for news and information. Many newspapers, magazines and books are now available online too. Broadcast signals, like those of television and radio, can be transmitted by cable or satellite. I also know that digital media is growing very fast and is having a greater influence on society than any other type of media.
What types of mass media do you usually rely on for information and entertainment?
I usually read news on my phone so I can get the most up-to-date information every day. Sometimes I also watch the news on television with my parents at dinner time. For entertainment, I like to watch films and listen to music using my computer or smartphone. I also like chatting with my friends on smartphone apps or online forums.
Pre-reading
Most of us learn about news through the mass media, but can we just believe news as it is presented? The two news reports and the article below encourage you to be a critical newsreader. Before you read the news reports and the article, think about the following questions:
•Do you believe everything you read in a news report?
Why or why not?
•What do you think makes a critical news reader?
Do you believe everything you read in a news report? Why or why not?
Example:
Definitely not. Some news may be one-sided or contain misleading details. News writers may have their own views, and some online news even aims to attract readers with eye-catching headlines. Therefore, we should not accept all information without thinking.
What do you think makes a critical news reader?
Example:
I think a critical news reader will look at news from various media sources, tell apart objective facts from personal feelings. He will raise questions about the information and refuse to believe unproven news easily.
Read the two news reports carefully and answer the questions.
Where did the Henderson Tower fire start?
It started from the 8th floor.
How long did it take the firefighters to get the situation under control according to the first news report?
About one hour and fifteen minutes.
Read the two news reports carefully and answer the questions.
What is the possible cause of the fire according to the second report?
A dropped cigarette end on a carpet started the fire. Besides, the automatic fire alarms failed to work quickly enough.
How did Lisa feel about the fire according to the second news report?
She felt it was like an awful dream.
Read the article carefully and answer the questions.
What should we not do when we come across factual differences in different news reports?
We should not rush to the conclusion that one of the news reports gives false information.
What may different journalists do when an estimate of a number is given?
Journalists may choose to present the minimum, the maximum or something in between in their news reports when an estimate of a number is given.
Read the article carefully and answer the questions.
Why do news reports on the same event sometimes carry different information?
①Journalists have different priorities in reporting.
②Real events are complicated and keep changing, so factual details get updated.
③Journalists may deal with collected information in different ways.
What advice does the article give us to understand an event fully?
We should read news reports from various perspectives and published at different stages, and check information from different sources.
Read the two news reports and the article and complete the tables below.

Reading news reports critically
Why do news reports differ from or even contradict each other? •_________________________________________________
•News reports may be written at different stages of an event.

How can we be critical news readers? •Read different news reports on the same event written from
various perspectives and at different stages.
•_________________________________________________
Read the two news reports and the article and complete the tables below.
Journalists may have different priorities
Journalists may approach information they get from research or interviews differently
Be critical about the information we receive and remember not to blindly trust what we have read
In pairs, discuss the following questions.
1. Three texts are presented to encourage the reader to read news critically. Why is the information organized this way? If you were to write on the same topic, what information would you choose to present and how would you organize the information?
The information is organized in a logical way so that readers understand the author's intention easily. First, readers are presented with the two news reports, so they can compare the differences between the two perspectives. Then the third text provides information and explanations regarding these differences, so that readers have a clear idea why they should be critical when reading news reports and how to be critical news readers.
If I were to write an article on the topic of reading news reports critically, I would first write a short passage about why it is important to read news reports critically and then ask students to read two different news reports about the same story. After the news reports, I would present another short passage on how to become a critical news reader. Organizing the information in this way will get students to think about the “why” as they are reading the news reports. Then after reading the “how” passage, they can reflect on whether their reading was critical or not. Students can then re-read the news reports to apply both the “why” and the “how” knowledge they now have in order to practise reading critically.
In pairs, discuss the following questions.
2. A British writer and journalist once said, "A community needs news, for the same reason that a man needs eyes. It has to see where it is going." How do you understand it?
In my opinion, a man needs eyes to collect sufficient information from around himself for his judgement and movement. In the same way, a community also needs news as the best source to provide proper information for judgement about its development. So, it is clear that news is critical for a community.
In pairs, discuss the following questions.
3. What else can we do to be critical news readers?
We can do more research on the news source. For example, we can find out more about the news agency, and the stand it takes. We could read or watch other materials from the source so we can get a further impression of the perspective their news usually takes and how trustworthy it seems.
