B Some parents may have trouble getting their kids away from electronics. But for the Suttons, this wasn't the case. Josh and Cassie Sutton completed a full-length hike of the Appalachian Trail with their son, Harvey. At just five years old, Harvey is one of the youngest people known to have completed the roughly 2,100-mile trail that stretches across l4 states. The Suttons covered the hike from Georgia to Maine in 209 days. Their journey began when Harvey was just four years old. He turned five before the family completed the hike. As a family, the Suttons became used to life on the trail. They woke up every day before 6am to pack their sleeping bags, tents and tools to begin hiking all day. When Harvey was two years old, his parents began training him for hiking by going on mini walks. They slowly increased their mileage day by day -- eventually preparing him for his big adventure. I think a lot of people are surprised at how well he did. The Suttons said that while the adventure of the 2,100-mile hike was fun, it did have its challenges especially when it came to keeping Harvey entertained and going forward. “As long as we' re playing make-believe with him all day long, he moves quickly and hikes faster than a lot of us imagine,” said Josh Sutton. While the Suttons have plans for more hikes and family adventures ahead, the family is getting adjusted to life at home again as Harvey begins his latest adventure: kindergarten. “Hopefully from going hiking for ten hours a day to sitting in the classroom, he’ ll do OK,” said Josh Sutton. 9. What do we know about Harvey? A. He never played electronic products. B. He was the youngest to travel across 14 states. C. He went through many difficulties in the trip. D. He spent about 7 months finishing the hiking. 10. What does the underlined word “mileage” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Limit. B. Distance. C. Ability. D. Knowledge 11. Which of the following was the Suttons’ challenge in the hiking? A. Making Harvey excited. B. Keeping people shocked. C. Pretending to move fast. D. Stopping Harvey complaining. 12. What is Harvey's newest adventure? A. Returning to his normal life. B. Practising sitting for ten hours a day. C. Getting used to school life and study. D. Learning some lessons from the hiking. C Cuckoos(布谷鸟) are masters of cheating. When it comes to raising young, they don't spend the energy building a nest(鸟巢), protecting eggs or feeding children. Instead, the female passes these roles on to other birds. They don't raise their own young. Usually, they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, fooling other birds into thinking the cuckoo eggs are theirs. To succeed in doing this, a female cuckoo watches over her chosen nest to observe feeding times. When the host parent leaves its nest in search of food, the cuckoo quickly lays her eggs among those already in the nest. Sometimes, she will even destroy and remove one of the host's eggs to make room for her own. Cuckoos are medium-sized birds with long tails, and often have gray or brown backs. When they hatch(孵化) and begin to grow in a host's nest, the difference between the two can be obvious to an onlooker. Often the cuckoo is twice the size of its foster parents(养父母), but still continues to receive food from them. The cuckoo imposter(冒名顶替者) is usually the only baby bird that the host parent has to care for. This is because when the cuckoo hatches after around 11 days, it gets rid of all the other eggs in the nest. It will lift each egg onto its back before throwing them one by one over the edge of the nest. Even then, the non-biological parent will continue to treat it as one of its own. Also, cuckoos have developed to produce eggs that are similar in color to their main hosts’. This reduces the chances of eggs being attacked. Female cuckoos have been known to take host birds’ attention away after laying their eggs by producing a noise similar to Eurasian sparrowhawks, scaring birds away from returning to the nest and allowing time for the cuckoo to make her escape unnoticed. 13. What do mother cuckoos usually do when it comes to raising their young? A. Attend to eggs. B. Build a new nest. C. Learn feeding skills. D. Rely on other birds. 14. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Other cuckoos. B. Baby cuckoos. C. Cuckoo's host parents. D. Cuckoo's birth parents. 15. What can be inferred about the cuckoo imposter? A. It usually hatches out earlier than the other eggs in the nest. B. It throws all the other eggs out of nests with its mother's help. C. It often makes a noise to scare other birds away from the nest. D. It looks much larger than other eggs in the nest before hatching. 16. Which can be the best title for the text? A. How cuckoos protect their children B. How cuckoos fool other birds C. How cuckoos destroy others' nests D. How cuckoos produce eggs D While screen time is known to affect sleep, new research suggests that interactive activities, such as texting friends or playing video games, put off and reduce the time spent asleep to a greater degree than passive screen time like watching television, especially for teens. The team studied the daytime screen-based activities of 475 teenagers using daily surveys. They asked the teens how many hours they had spent that day communicating with friends through social media and how many hours they spent playing video games, surfing the internet and watching television or videos. Finally, the researchers asked if they had joined in any of these activities in the hour before bed. Next, the team measured their sleep time for one week. The researchers found that the teens spent an average of two hours per day communicating with friends through social media, about 1.3hours playing video games, less than an hour surfing the internet and about 1.7 hours watching television or videos. For every hour throughout the day that they used screens to communicate with friends, they fell asleep about 11 minutes later averagely. For every hour to play video games, they fell asleep about 9 minutes later. Those who talked, texted or played games in the hour before bed lost the most sleep: about 30 minutes later. Interestingly, David, lead author of the study, said the team found no obvious relations between passive screen-based activities and sleep. “It could be that passive activities are less mentally exciting than interactive activities,” said Anne, co-author of the study. “It’s a tricky situation,” she said. “These screen tools are really important to everyone nowadays, so it's hard to put a limit on them, but if you' re really looking out for a teenager's health and well-being, you might consider limiting the more interactive activities, especially in the hour before bed.” 17. Which of the following belongs to interactive screen activities? A. Seeing movies. B. Watching videos. C. Texting friends. D. Listening to music. 18. Who might lose the most sleep according to the text? A. Lucy who watched a two-hour movie before going to bed. B. Jack who had a 30-minute video chat with his brother before bed. C. Sam who played computer games for two hours throughout the day. D. Amy who chatted with her friends on WeChat for one hour in the morning. 19. What does the underlined word “tricky” mean in paragraph 4? A. Frightening. B. Difficult. C. Hopeless. D. Encouraging. 20. What is author's purpose in writing the text? A. To suggest limiting interactive screen use. B. To compare popularity of screen activities among teens. C. To suggest banning all teens’ screen time for better sleep. D. To inform that passive screen use is better than interactive screen use.
