Fan Jinshi, born in 1938, is widely known as the “Daughter of Dunhuang”. After graduating from Peking University in 1963, she volunteered to work at the Dunhuang Academy in Gansu Province, despite the extremely harsh living conditions—there was no running water, no electricity, and sandstorms hit the area almost every week.
At first, many people doubted whether a young woman from Beijing could stick to such a tough life. But Fan stayed. Over the past 60 years, she has devoted all her time and energy to protecting and studying the Mogao Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses over 2,000 colored sculptures and 45,000 square meters of ancient murals.
In the 1980s, Fan noticed that the growing number of tourists was causing damage to the fragile murals. She led a team to launch a digital preservation project, scanning every mural and sculpture to build a complete digital archive. Thanks to her efforts, people can now enjoy the beauty of Dunhuang art online without touching or harming the original works.
In 2019, Fan was awarded the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest state honor. When asked why she spent her whole life in the desert, she simply said, “Dunhuang is not just a historical site—it’s a treasure of Chinese civilization. I just did what I was supposed to do.”

gave up“放弃”、showed up“露面”、cheered up“振作起来”,无法匹配顿悟的情节。

She led a team to launch a digital preservation project, scanning every mural and sculpture to build a complete digital archive. Thanks to her efforts, people can now enjoy the beauty of Dunhuang art online without touching or harming the original works.

In 2024, Wang Haoze made history as China’s first female flight engineer and a member of the Shenzhou-19 crew. Her journey from a rocket engineer to a space hero is a story of courage, hard work, and the power of a willing mind.
Born in 1990 in Hebei Province, Wang Haoze grew up in a strict but loving family. From a young age, she learned the value of persistence. In 2008, she passed the Gaokao and joined Southeast University in Nanjing. There, she was good at studying and loved sports, often competing in races.
After graduating in 2015, Wang became a rocket engineer in Beijing. She worked hard and enjoyed her job. But she dreamed of something bigger. In 2018, she applied for China’s astronaut program. Over two years, she faced hard tests against over 2,500 people. Although she failed many times, she never gave up. Finally, she became one of the 18 new astronauts—and the only woman in the group.
On October 30, 2024, Wang’s dream came true. She flew into space with two teammates aboard Shenzhou-19. She became the third female astronaut in China’s history.

The person I look up to most is Yuan Longping, the “Father of Hybrid Rice”. What makes him so inspiring is his lifelong devotion to rice research. Despite the tough conditions, he spent years working in the fields to solve the global hunger problem. Besides, his spirit of never giving up encourages me a lot. Inspired by him, I have made up my mind to study harder. Whenever I face difficulties in my studies, I will think of his hard work and keep going.
