Dear Tom,
As for the various extra-curricular activities in my school that you referred to in the last letter, I am now writing to briefly introduce them to you.
Designed to arouse our interest in English and give us a better understanding of foreign culture, an English cultural festival was launched in form of competitions of English plays, speeches and songs. The English play competition featured well-known dramas like “The Merchant of Venice” and “Snow White”. In addition, we students burst into applause when speakers presented speeches titled “I have a dream” and “My Hometown”. The English song competition was so unforgettable that we sang along with singers onstage when they performed songs like “Top Of the World” and “Hand In Hand”. It was through the activity that we were exposed to the beauty and fun of English language.
I wonder if you could tell me some extra-curricular activities in your school.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

London has already hosted the Olympics twice before and the 2021 Olympics will make it the first city in history to have held three Olympic games.
The first London Olympics in 1908
These games were going to be held in Rome but, because of a volcano, Rome wasn’t ready. London agreed to stage the games and the White City Olympic Stadium was built in just 10 months. What was new at these Olympics was the opening ceremony where athletes paraded (列队行进) with their teams behind their national flags. Only 22 countries took part and the profits were just over £21,000!
The second London Olympics
Because of the Second World War, the 1944 Olympics were cancelled. Four years later the war was over and London was able to hold the Games in 1948.Things were very different in London during these Olympic Games and many years of war had left the UK poor and hungry. People called them the “Austerity Games”. But there were still some great sports and some exciting events!
59 countries took part, more than at any other Olympics before and the USA won the most medals with 84. For the first time, cameras filmed the games and broadcast them on television so that people could watch them in their own homes.
The third London Olympics in 2021
The Games this year are going to be bigger, better and more exciting than ever before. There will be more than 10,000 athletes from 204 countries taking part!

“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office.I just know you’d be a trustworthy worker. Modern technology has a strong influence on every part of our life, including the education in the universities.
Ashok Goel, a professor of Georgia Institute of Technology, says he uses the Internet in almost all of the classes he teaches. Every term over 300 graduate students take his class on artificial intelligence The students never meet in person. All of the classes take place online — through a website, which lets students ask questions and complete their work from anywhere in the world.
Having hundreds of students in a class means Ashok Goel has to answer thousands of questions. He has eight teaching assistants to help him. But even that is not enough to give all the students the help they need.
So, in January, Goel had an idea. He decided to try an experiment. At the start of the spring 2016 term, he added a new member to his teaching team: Jill Watson. She was able to answer questions faster than most other teaching assistants. And she was available 24 hours a day.
It was only at the end of the term that Goel’s students learned Watson’s true identity: she was not a real person like the other teaching assistants. Jill Watson was an AI computer program.
And it seems Goel’s stories will become more common in the universities.
A website called Campus Technology publishes stories about how colleges and universities use new technology. In August, the site published a survey of over 500 professors and their use of technology. Fifty-five percent of the professors asked students to use study materials online before coming to class. And, more than 70 percent combined (使相结合) online materials and face-to-face teaching in their classrooms.
61. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?

C. Goel occasionally meets his colleagues. D. Goel’s students dislike going to college.
62. Why does Goel have many teaching assistants to help him?
A. He is not a clever professor. B. He wants to have a good sleep.
C. He does not want to give answers. D. He has no time to answer all the questions.
63. What can we know about Jill Watson?
A. She was a real person. B. She helped Goel with his work.
C. She was one of Goel’s students. D. She could ask all the questions.
64. What does the underlined word “identity” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Who a person is. B. The name of a person.
C. Where a person is from. D. A person’s contribution.
65. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Ashok Goel has eight assistants to help him.
B. New technology is changing our way of living.
C. Modern technology greatly influences college education.
D. Teachers will be completely replaced by the computers.

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.
However,to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And,in addition to that,in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things,it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.
This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do ,it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.
When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway.
Whatever you do,if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time.If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards.Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.
66. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ________.
A. the reasons for success B. the meaning of success
C. the standards of success D. the importance of success
67. In Paragraph 2,the underlined word that refers to ______.
A. being good at something B. setting a practical goal
C. putting in more time D. succeeding in life
68. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______.
A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work
C. one gives up his work easily D. it takes a lot of time to succeed
69. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?
A. Successful people like to show their great skills.
B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.
C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.
D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.
70. What is the main theme of the passage?
A. Having a goal is vital to success.
B. Being good is different from being great.
C. One cannot succeed without time and practice.
D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.

Aesha Ash spent most of her life ballet (芭蕾舞) dancing and even turned it into a career as a member of the New York City Ballet. As much as she loved to dance, she found the weight of her responsibility heavy because she was often the only African American ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) in her classes and company.
After retiring (退休) from ballet in 2007, Aesha enjoyed the quiet life for more than ten years before she decided to come back to ballet, but in a completely new way. She started The Swan Dreams Project that helps kids in poor areas get into the world of ballet.
Aesha set up a one-week camp that invited kids to not only learn the basics of ballet, but also get an introduction to French (since she says it is “the language of ballet”).
Her first camp was in 2018 in a poor neighborhood in New York. When she arrived she was greeted by dozens of students, most of whom were African Americans. She wanted to help kids who otherwise might not have ever had the chance to live in the world of ballet.
On the final day of camp, after a week of learning, the students put on a final performance for their family and friends. Before the performance, Aesha said she was nervous that it would be less of a performance and more of a mess, since the campers were all between 8 and 11 years old. Much to her surprise, it turned out to be perfect. She said, “When we went out to our first circle and the kids began counting in French and performing the steps they had just learned, my heart melted.”
Aesha continues to do whatever she can to help kids learn ballet. She found a way to turn that seemingly unbearable weight she once carried around into something good for kids, as well as for the world of ballet.

Modern technology has a strong influence on every part of our life, including the education in the universities.
Ashok Goel, a professor of Georgia Institute of Technology, says he uses the Internet in almost all of the classes he teaches.

A. Goel seldom uses the Internet in his class. B. The students take Goel’s class online.
B 62. D 63. B 64. A 65. C

D
A 67. B 68. D 69. B 70. C
根据第一段“Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is.”(有些人认为成功只属于那些有天赋或有良好家庭环境的人,而另一些人则认为成功主要取决于运气。
“However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in additional to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. ”(然而,要在生活中取得成功,你必须要设定一个目标,然后逐步将它变得更加实际。除此之外,要变得更加擅长某事,必须花费至少10,000个小时进行学习和实践。)可知,除此之外,指的是前面的设定实际的目标。此外,也可以从结构上找到答案,出现两次的needs. 属于原词重现。故选B。
【68题解析】
细节理解题。根据“To become great at certain things,it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.”(要精通某些事情,甚至需要更多的时间,而大多数人不会投入这些时间。) 以及第三段的“This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. ”(这就是为什么许多成功人士建议你去做你喜欢的事情的一个重要原因。)可知答案的关键是this。而this 指代的内容刚好是与时间(To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in.)
根据第四段“It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.” 通过but之后的内容“thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.” D项可以根据第四段最后一句的does you no good排除。
通过文章最后一段主题句“Whatever you do , if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. ”(无论你做什么,如果你想在这方面做得很好,你需要日复一日地工作,几乎到上瘾的程度,而且要持续很长一段时间)以及文章多次提到要花费时间和精力可知正确选项为C。ABD项都是以偏概全。属于原词重现。故选C。
第Ⅱ卷(35分)
第四部分:写作(共两节;满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。

根据第二段“After retiring (退休) from ballet in 2007, Aesha enjoyed the quiet life for more than ten years before she decided to come back to ballet, but in a completely new way. She started The Swan Dreams Project that helps kids in poor areas get into the world of ballet. ( 2007年从芭蕾舞界退休后,Aesha享受了十多年平静的生活,之后她决定以一种全新的方式重新回到芭蕾舞界。她发起了“天鹅梦计划”,帮助贫困地区的孩子们进入芭蕾舞的世界)”由此可知,是在她退休十年后发起的这个计划、故答案为About ten years after her retirement.。

根据第一段“As much as she loved to dance, she found the weight of her responsibility heavy because she was often the only African American ballerina (芭蕾舞女演员) in her classes and company.(尽管她很喜欢跳舞,但她发现自己责任的重量很重,因为她经常是班里和舞团中唯一的非裔美国芭蕾舞演员)”和第二段“After retiring (退休) from ballet in 2007, Aesha enjoyed the quiet life for more than ten years before she decided to come back to ballet, but in a completely new way. She started The Swan Dreams Project that helps kids in poor areas get into the world of ballet. ( 2007年从芭蕾舞界退休后,Aesha享受了十多年平静的生活,之后她决定以一种全新的方式重新回到芭蕾舞界。她发起了“天鹅梦计划”,帮助贫困地区的孩子们进入芭蕾舞的世界)”可推断出Aesha是一个有责任感的充满爱心的人。她发起了“天鹅梦计划”,帮助贫困地区的孩子们进入芭蕾舞的世界也证明了这一点。故答案为She is a responsible woman full of love. She started a camp to help kids in poor areas.。

Dear Tom,
As for the various extra-curricular activities in my school that you referred to in the last letter, I am now writing to briefly introduce them to you.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
